Time for that unhinged Geryon essay I promised:
I've posted about it before, but now with the finale out and with the final confrontation between Hotaro and Geryon, I'm just thinking again about the thematic aspects of Geryon once again. And how he and his obsession with turning the world into gold is meant to symbolize wanting things to stay the same.
While Hotaro and the others wish to move things forward and change the future.
And that is one of the main themes of this show: To push forwards, reach your dreams, and change the future. And how you can only do both of those things by moving forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Geryon talks about turning worthless things into gold "is the true goal of alchemy". While with Hotaro, Rinne, and others being an alchemist is about using alchemy to bring happiness into the world. Which is a vastly different goal than the original historic reason behind the origin of alchemy.
To Geryon, Hotaro's dream, and the concept of having dreams itself is a pointless endeavor. As well as a sign of weakness. What really matters to him is to create something with what he thinks has real "worth", by using what is one of the original purposes of alchemy and probably the most well known: turning base metals into gold.
Also gold is classified as a noble metal. Which is interesting to think about the name of that classification when you see Geryon seeing gold and turning the whole world into gold is something that actually has "worth", compared to bringing happiness into the world. Or to create a world where humans and chemies can coexist.
With that: it also can be read that Geryon is an alchemist purist too. Rejecting the notion the of idea Alchemy should be used to bring happiness to others, which is a much newer ideal compared to turning base metals into gold.
This is not "the true goal of alchemy" or "what alchemy is for" after all, two things he says throughout the course of the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another theme in this show is the next generation being the hope to bring change for the future.
But Geryon being part of the adults of the cast fully rejects what Hotaro and the others are standing for. Compared to Minato, Kyoka, and Fuga who are behind guiding the next generation to help them bring the change they strive to achieve. The three of them say as much in various points of the show.
Which is just something I find really interesting to think about.
Lastly: this entire speech from Hotaro during the final battle also really stuck out to me when watching it the first time. And is a perfect display of the themes present in the show:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gold is eternal, Geryon says as much in Episode 49. To create a world of gold is to keep things exactly the same as they were. Nothing can change, time is at a standstill.
Tumblr media
But that is not what is needed for the betterment of the world. What is needed is to keep pushing onwards, and to try and grasp our dreams, and change the future.
His motivation and end goal is extremely simple, but it just works so well thematically for this show and the messages it wants to tell. He is a perfect foil to Hotaro and is an excellent villain to me because of how his motivation completely contrasts Hotaro's. It's a really good use of the original purpose of alchemy!
The best way I can describe Geryon as a villain is "simple but effective".
Sometimes you don't need a super complex motivation to have an effective antagonist for your story. It all depends on what you want to tell. And just from a thematic standpoint, Geryon just works as a villain for the story and messages of Gotchard.

Okay, maybe that guy was a bit fishy. We need the right detective for this case.
Dedicating this to all the Columbo comments under three fish in a trench coat, he's a catfish now.

Kamen Rider Gavv Episode 22 Production Blog
the idea of miscommunications not being the main driving plot point for 10 episodes is so unprecedented in this franchise that it caused the most widespread, unanimous shock that i’ve ever seen in a fandom
taken from this website
TOKU TRANSLATION MASTERPOST HERE
Looking at the Next Episode
“the truth is bitter”— these are the words engraved on Hanto’s ring. Bandai chose those words meaning “the truth is sometimes bittersweet” since Hanto is a reporter by trade and not prone to sweeten things. This came full circle in the subtitle of episode 22.
Director Tasaki spoke highly of Shoma and Hanto’s performances in the scene where Hanto hears Shoma out. His careful direction became a lesson for the two cast members, too. (Director Tasaki’s “No. 1 Sentai Gozyuger” will start airing soon too, so please watch that after the next episode of “Gavv”!)
And… Picking up from that wild final moment, the next two episodes, 23 and 24, will be directed by Satoshi Morota. He carefully captured Shoma, Hanto, and Sachika’s interconnecting thoughts. Sachika will be active now as well, so please look forward to that. The moment when she shut Hanto out in episode 22 was great. I think that kind of scene is unique to Junko Komura. I want Sachika to be Shoma’s Sun…
Valentine’s Day is soon, but… Valentine’s Day for Gavv seems to concern a bitter push. Oh, you don’t need more bitterness? Um… ice cream is also delicious in winter.
(Written by Naomi Takebe)
The Episode in Short
Thank you for watching episode 22!
And thank you for the one year of “Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger”! It’s sad that Boon can’t be next to us anymore, but things will only get more exciting in “Gavv” from now on!
This was the first and last arc directed by Ryuta Tasaki. Starting next week, a new program will start which Director Tasaki is serving as the pilot director for, but if it were one week off, we would have had “Super Tasaki Time” (one hour of non-stop Tasaki action).
The previously mentioned Director Tasaki filmed the episodes which went from Shoma’s identity being revealed to the (temporary?) conclusion of the surge in emotional drama.
Tumblr media
With You, Who Has a Mouth on Your Stomach
Vram, the third Kamen Rider, has arrived, and with the entrance of the mysterious being Bitter Gavv, “Gavv’s” network of relationships becomes further intertwined. The personal relationship between Hanto, who had a particular grudge against Granutes, and Shoma, who he now knows the identity of, becomes the focal point.
Because of Bitter Gavv’s attacks, Hanto and Rakia, who don’t quite get along yet, have also formed a connection. It feels like the passionate Hanto and the ever-tired Rakia have completely opposite personalities… haha.
Tumblr media
It’s not only about Kamen Riders; Sachika’s presence in this episode was also striking.
Sachika has no preexisting prejudice, and she holds a thoughtful kindness that lets her trust in Shoma. I was deeply moved by Miyabe’s acting, which showed a side of the character that’s different from her normal brightness!
There might be people who were surprised to see a gyaru-related heroine in the Reiwa era when the show first started broadcasting, but this open-minded kindness is the true worth of a new-generation gyaru heroine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thus, Hanto is moved by Sachika’s words and tries to find Shoma. It’s a very long two-person scene that took up 3 pages in the script! It became a huge highlight moment for Chinen and Hino.
“A place with beautiful scenery” was written in the script, and it’s a very important scene where the two of them share their true thoughts, so we carried out a thorough search for a good location and chose the upper floor of a building with a sweeping view of the city. (Unfortunately, there was poor weather, but the landscape is still very good)
Tumblr media
Komura’s script for this two-person scene that reaches three pages is also wonderful, but it became an even more impressive scene with shots at many different angles and impressive direction that uses the reflections in the windows.
Episode 22 was one that required even more set locations than usual. It’s precisely because Director Tasaki has been the pilot director (the director who works with the cast members from the very start) for countless Riders and Sentais that I think he fostered these two’s growth in their performance!
It was a serious and emotional scene, but the director accurately explained his theory, and I thought it was just like him when I watched it! (As expected of a legendary director…)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They carefully studied Director Tasaki’s monitor from behind him.
Tumblr media
Since that was a somewhat serious conversation, I’ll post an off-camera photo of Chinen with the octopus. He’s going strong, with a strong sense of service when he faces the camera, haha.
Tumblr media
Make the Bitterness Go Away!
Following the previous episode, Dark Shoma and Bitter Gavv’s insatiable quest for food (snacks) continues. He attacks a truck and the back area of a supermarket. His exploits are even more daring than last time.
Unlike Shoma, he seems to have snacks that can produce Gochizos and snacks that can’t, and so he focuses intently on continuing to search. Seems like karintō cookies weren’t right either…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chinen played Dark Shoma with all of his might this episode. Chinen’s specialty is making food look delicious as he eats them, so it was a challenge to eat more wildly this time. When he was asked, “How is Dark Shoma?”, he answered, “He’s fun!”. He’s doing many kinds of acting that he couldn’t usually do, and having even more fun than normal.
Tumblr media
He ate all that food, and in the end, this week’s success snack was “black candy”! The VRCan Spicy Gochizo has a design that looks like a dark VRCan Gochizo. There weren’t many things used in this episode, but it’s interesting to see what powers they will use.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To the 22nd episode’s last fight! Shoma and Hanto’s double transformation! It’s like in episode 12, after their identities were revealed, but it’s still exciting to have a double transformation at a important turning point in the story!
Tumblr media
Team play with CaKing Gavv and Donut Form Valen! Gavv puts cream into the donut and makes it fly around. This episode was another one full of fun snack direction.
The action with the donuts used as footholds was also amazing! The suit actors Nawata and Kaji were suspended in the air, and the donuts were added afterwards with CG, but it’s incredible action with mid-air movement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bitter Gavv is more accustomed to battles since the first match in the last episode, and he doesn’t want to lose either! He captures a Gochizo thrown with the Gochispeeder, and feeds it into the Bitter GavvBlade. If I were a Gochizo, I wouldn’t be able to handle it, either, haha.
A Kamen Rider’s weapon attacks are determined in advance so we can make specifications for their toys, but it’s the director and action director’s job to decide how they’ll effectively show it being used!
Tumblr media
Gavv and Valen defeated Bitter Gavv with their finishing attacks, but Shoma falls into peril and Hanto only saves him by a hair’s breadth!
Tumblr media
Naturally, Chinen was hung by a wire in this scene that was then erased in post-production. I was nervous when I watched the filming, and I thought, “Isn’t that scary…?”, but Chinen boldly faced it in filming!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shoma’s memories finally resurface from the depths of his mind. The bitterness spoken of in this episode’s subtitle, “The Truth Is Bittersweet”, will finally come to light in the next episode.
Tumblr media
Don’t miss out on it!
[No author listed, but probably written by Ryohei Takahashi]

Kamen Rider Vram Overview Translation
from this website
2024 has already come to an end. Thank you for always supporting us! This article will precede the new chapter that will begin starting with episode 17 broadcasting on January 5th. Here is a showcase of a new Kamen Rider!
Kamen Rider Vram has suddenly appeared in front of Gavv and Valen. He equips the belt, Vrastam Gear, which Nyelv developed. Eitoku is the suit actor portraying him. He also played the Granute Lage9’s kaijin form, and he makes up this downer man together with the human form actor [Kohei] Shoji.
Use the Doppuding Gochizo to transform into Pudding Custom, and the PuruJelly Gochizo to transform into Jelly Custom!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The slanted eyes make them look a little scary, but the rings of color are very fashionable. The antennae protruding from both ears are shaped like spoons… Nyelv is serious about this, haha. Battles different from Gavv and Valen in every way are about to unfold, so please look forward to it!
Vram’s weapon is the Vram Breaker! (Shoji has a deep connection to weapons called “breakers”.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It changes between bow and sickle modes, allowing for long-distance attacks, close-range attacks, and a shield. It can also charge up power using Gochizos.
Tumblr media
Nyelv has prepared Doppuding and PuruJelly Gochizos. The somehow smug-looking faces and sauce bangs are noteworthy. Being a different shape from Shoma’s Gochizos, they’re inserted in a different way. [i’m not translating this sentence literally, i don’t know how to not make it sound like innuendo]
A Granute becoming a Kamen Rider?! Discover the full story of his transformation when it broadcasts on January 5th at 9:00!

Name: Corn Critter
Debut: The Denpa Men: They Came By Wave
If you know about The Denpa Men, you know it is a weird game/series! And if you haven’t played it, you probably do not know much more about it other than “it is weird” and “it is about some weird guys” and “it had a weird live-action commercial” and stuff like that. That is all surface-level stuff! It is so easy to look at a game and say “that looks weird” and go on your merry way. But the truth is, that way is not actually very merry at all. The merry way is to play the weird game and experience the weirdness and fun and silliness for yourself! The merry way is the one that leads you to Corn Critter!
Corn Critter is an absolutely incredible little creature, and you can see that just from looking at it! It has a perfect Eyes-In-A-Void Face, with eyes that look even more like binder reinforcement ring stickers than such eyes often do. Quite a simple face. But it’s the context of the face that makes it so incredible! It is within CORN! Within this corn cob is naught but darkness, and two eyes, watching you. Could this get any better?
Tumblr media
It could! This isn’t even just a void face within a corn cob, but the eyes are situated within the creature’s MOUTH! Corn Critter’s method of attack is a bite, and I SO love how well it works with the typical bite animation. That is definitely meant to represent some blocky teeth, but it works just as well, if not better, for our Critter’s tooth-adjacent kernels!
Speaking of those kernels, they don’t seem to have much depth to them. It makes me think this isn’t as much a creature inhabiting a corn cob, as it is a mimic! It could very easily disguise itself as a big ol’ normal cob and wait to chomp anyone who tries to eat it. Except it doesn’t do that, because its face is open as its default state. But it could if it wanted to! If it was allowed to, if they programmed the capability into it. It has no free will :(
Tumblr media
Corn Critter just keeps on winning, because while we have discussed its incredible design, just as perfect is its name! It is named after corn fritters! My preferred vessel for corn is Muffin, but fritters are still incredibly delicious! They are also a deep fried Heart Attack On A Bun. But that’s ok. They are Yum-A-Licious™!

#this is huge for the legsit heads out there
Tumblr media
Name: Legsit
Debut: Yo-Kai Watch 3
Look at this! Look at this!!! This is the little guy from emergency exit signs and stop signs and various more of our favorite signs, but this time you can BEFRIEND them! You can run all around town with this absolute icon of an icon! You can take Legsit for a walk across the crosswalk... and you can even teach it to jaywalk! A new thrill it would never dare to experience without your help!
Legsit is an incredible kind of design, the one that's so simple, barely a change from its inspiration, but the inspiration is what's so creative. Legsit is basically JUST the little guy from the sign, with only a little wispy head to differentiate it, but how many times have you seen it used as an actual character, with its origin tied to its gimmick? I have actually long ago had the idea of a Walk Sign Guy as a character (in the context of a boss that swings the sign itself as a weapon, and can call upon the red Stop hand to freeze its opponent) and it is so awesome to see this concept come to fruition in something big, and with its own flair!
Tumblr media
By default, Legsit is in its iconic Static Running Pose, though it is not afraid to actually move around, too. It looks good doing it thanks to being tastefully cel-shaded! What if there was an animal that was cel-shaded in real life? Just one. Not even a translucent invertebrate like you might expect, but like, one particular species of vole. Pretty cool!
In terms of gameplay it's very straightforward. Its specialty is to make itself and allies faster like they gotta get outta here. I'm done talking about gameplay already, it's really about the visual novelty there. Now I will talk about its anime appearance, because yowza!
Tumblr media
The anime reveals that inside the exit sign is a whole other world, one populated by a whole civilization of Legsit! They each take turns posing in the sign, but when not doing that, they just Hang Out. Some of them play on 3DSes, some lounge about, some play guitar, and some barbecue various meats that are most certainly radioactive! Would you eat Legsit's Famous Toxic Kebab? I sure hope not! Because they were saving it for me.
Tumblr media
Legsit represents the creativity and wonder that can be found everywhere in the world, and NOT just if you know where to look! I can assure you that anywhere you look, you will see at LEAST a few things that are waiting for someone to appreciate them in just the right way. Maybe you will be the first to discover the potential of something overlooked, and if you're not the first, then that's great too! It means the world is full of beautiful minds!
