never seen anyone brought this up before so I really want to know: do ya'll prefer Jon with a deeper voice or something more Wally Wingert-ish?
#garfield#jon arbuckle#found it interesting that in the 1900's Jon exclusively had a deeper voice#but since the 2000's everything from official stuff to parodies always default to having him in this particular high pitch voice#wonder if it has anything to do with how he went from being in his thirties to early twenties#I love both interpretations of his voice but my two cents is that I think a deeper voice fits Jon better in the grand scheme of things#to me it avoids making him too... cliché?#really love Thom Huge if it's not obvious already

been thinking about this topic for a little while and I wonder if anyone else finds it interesting that the strips, of the last...approximately 15-something years - is notably disconnected from the overall franchise? To preface, Garfield has rarely been a consistent franchise so every new iteration obviously differs from each other, but I feel like everything non-strips are a lot more connected to each other than they are to the strips and vice versa. It's hard to pinpoint, but from characterizations, how relevant certain characters are, to full on character dynamics, I feel like a lot of things are sorta exclusive to the strips.
there are things that had always been different, of course, like how Jon's occupation as a cartoonist had always been neglected in the strips vs the rest of the franchise, but I feel like characterizations in particular differs a lot. Most notable example on top of my head being Jon (again) and how so much more immature and dim-witted he often gets depicted in the strips - alongside having awful hygiene - in which neither I see as a mainstay in the rest of the franchise. The only exception I can think of are the Pet Force books, which is a strange case to say the least because Emperor Jon is characterized a lot more normally compared to the actual Jon Arbuckle in the book.
#garfield#jon arbuckle#very unorganized ramble#I have a lot more to say but if I keep going it'll never end#the other thing I have in mind is how much Jon and Garfield bickers in the strips#like insanely so#Liz is also characterized differently in the rest of the franchise vs the strips#but not to a complete shift like Jon and she's more or less the same in the 1900's films and cartoon#In terms of side characters every big garfield iteration has their own cast of OCs#but I find it so peculiar that Vito started off in TGS n appeared in not just the Kboom comics but also in the '24 movie even if redesigned#I'm not too big of a fan of how Jon is usually characterized in the strips honestly#I don't dislike him... how could I! but it's too bad it's most people's only exposure of him#I'm talking about a specific era of the strips to preface#I'm someone who's a lot more adjusted to whatever is normal in the rest of the franchise#so I occasionally feel like I got splashed by a bucket of water whenever I see what goes on w the strips
