I hate MFs who defend the httyd 3 ending by calling it book accurate because absolutely nothing about the movies is book accurate. First off, it's not accurate because Toothless stays with Hiccup until he dies and the dragons leave over time on their own accord. Second of all, you can't have a book accurate ending if nothing in your movies has been book accurate beforehand. The reason the ending works in the books is because of the events that lead up to it. Without them, it's just a shoddy job of a lazy ending. It feels like 'we didnt feel like writing the ending but the books have a perfectly good one so we'll use that' with no prior planning. It works in the books because of the build up and lack of censorship. We see the slavery, the war, the murder, we see how terrible things get, which makes the dragons leaving more believable. We see Hiccup fail, we see everything go down hill, we see the sacrifices that are made throughout the stories and it sets us up for an understanding of why the dragons had to leave, while also easing us into it by implying that they don't all leave immediately, but in the movies, they all leave in one go, and it makes no sense because there's no way every dragon all across the world could possibly know that they all need to go to the hidden world. In the movies, Hiccup and Toothless always win. Seeing them separate, even after beating the bad guy, gives us a sense of disappointment because when good guys win the ending should be happy, but the ending makes us all cry, which is why the movie was so disappointing.

valhallarama, character of all time. she's 6'3", she's built like an oak tree, she's an absent mother with a doting husband, she fails her lifelong quest because her son is the chosen one but helps him out anyway, her pet cat is called fiddlesticks, she's a canonically great swordsman, she rides the fastest dragon in the archipelago, she starts a revolution for her son after he reads her for filth, her epic failed romance haunts the narrative a little bit, "you are not my first love but you are my last", her dad is a really bad soothsayer, she's so so so in love with her family, she's her husband's emotional rock, 'chunky thighs' is literally in her title

obviously the how to train ur dragon movies and books are complete opposites but I think a major difference between httyd 1 (book) and httyd 1 (movie) is that in the movie hiccup is a snarky 16 year old who is disliked by his Viking tribe partly bcus he’s two pounds and a wimp and partly bcus he’s a snotty little asshole, making his status as an outcast come off as pitiful in a way that’s not entirely tragic since it’s fairly justified in a way that is realistic for a sympathetic asshole teen to be, and in the book Hiccup is a ten year old autistic boy who gets violently beaten every day by his much older and stronger peers who alongside his adult tribe mates, verbally abuse and berate him for being small (he’s ten) and socially awkward (he’s autistic) so regularly that his internal monologue is so endlessly pessimistic and self hating that it could be the internal monologue of a fifty year old man about to commit suicide and not a ten year old boy living in a fantasy land. Movie stoic tries to prevent hiccup from entering dragon training at 16 bcus he’s worried for his safety, book hiccup is forced to enter a cave full of dragons at ten yrs old and told that if he doesn’t come back having wrangled a dragon for himself he will be exiled out of the tribe and killed and when he is inevitably attacked by said hoard of dragons he’s made to jump from a cliff into the below freezing water while it’s snowing and nearly breaks his neck to escape the dragon about to rip his tendon out. It’s so funny to me that in httyd (movies) adaption choice to make the story “more mature” they also change all of the super dark and fucked up elements to be tamer and less intense 💀

BRO WHY DO THEY KEEP MAKING HICCUP LESS PATHETIC IN EACH PIECE OF MEDIA HES IN.
If anyone read the books, they knows he’s supposed to be the most pathetic, kicked dog, soaking wet cat guy ever. Then they made him in the movies, and sure in the first movie he’s kinda pathetic, BUT IN THE FOLLOWING MOVIES HES LESS PATHETIC AND KINDA HOT??? LIKE STOP BRING BACK MY SAD LITTLE MAN.
And then in the live action(either going to suck or be ok) HE DOESNT LOOK PATHETIC AT ALL. HE LOOKS LIKE RTTE HICCUP WHO ISNT PATHETIC IN THE SLIGHTEST.
BRING BACK PATHETIC MEN PLEASE BRING BACK MY USELESS LITTLE TWELVE YEAR OLD NERD WHO CAN SPEAK TO DRAGONS NOT THIS FLYING GUY WHOS ACTUALLY COOL FOR THE LOVE LF GOD.

I HATE THIS SO MUCH bring back the old covers PLEASE what is this GARBAGE
it was bad enough when they released new covers when the animated films came out but this is so much worse (the live action film doesn't need to exist and no one can change my mind)
Tumblr media
and like - is this book 1 or ?? what even is this because it can't be a book-of-the-film kinda thing because it's written by cressida cowell and the sticker indicates that whatever this book contains came out before the films which don't even follow the story of the httyd books so WHY DOES THIS NEW COVER EXIST??????? YOU'RE FEATURING CHARACTERS ON THE COVER THAT AREN'T EVEN IN THE BOOK? TOOTHLESS DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT IN THE BOOKS HE A SILLY LITTLE GREEN PIECE OF SHIT DRAGON (and i love him)
also "the legend is real"??? where did that tagline even come from? it's so cheesy I can't even
to compare - these are some different versions of the older covers, which imo are SO much better and not as misleading as these new film versions. they're so colourful and the art is so cool

one thing i love about the httyd books is that hiccup wasn't born with the ability to speak dragonese. it wasn't some 'chosen one' thing that caused hiccup to feel empathy for the dragons- it was hiccups genuine love and fascination towards them. he learned dragonese because he wanted to- because he wanted to be able to understand them. also the fact that dragonese is a learnable language for humans solidifies the fact that the dragons are not senseless animals or pets as they kind of are in the movies. they are of equal intelligence and sentience as humans- which calls into question the ethics of using them as hunting animals and modes of transport and basically glorified slaves. which was basically what the dragon rebellion was started over.
also from the stories and flashbacks about hiccup the first and hiccup the second we get the sense that dragonese was a common language for humans to know as well. havent read the books in a bit so correct me if im wrong but both hiccups and grimbeard knew dragonese, and dragons lived alongside humans as equals at that point in time (at least up until grimbeards reign.) the dragons started being mass enslaved by grimbeard because of a peaceful protest against the dragon enslavement that turned violent (btw it only got violent because grimbeard killed his fucking son. so.) so yeah the fact that the dragons were turned into glorified (forcefully enslaved!!) pets is actually horrific and they had every right to break free.
whats also horrific is that this abuse only ended with hiccup. hiccup was the first one to question this. he was the first person to see dragons as equal. the first to take the time to learn their language. he was the first to properly empathise with them. if he hadnt then the dragons would have continued to be enslaved until they either died out or eventually broke free (and even then their rebellion was triggered by the dragon furious, who hiccup freed)
also this shows how harmful learned abuse and weaponised incompetence can be. this tradition of dragon training and seeing them as less than was passed on and expected of young children who didnt know any better. and the hooligans (and most of the vikings tbh) whole thing was being proudly uneducated and not taking the time or having the capacity to see the harm they were causing. this kept going and going until hiccup. (also its very telling that the wanderers did not have this tradition of enslaving dragons. and were enslaved themselves)
so yeah the events of the series only happened because hiccup took the time to actually understand and communicate with the dragons instead of mindlessly yelling at them
rant partially inspired by @pine-dragon's wonderful post about httyd dragons
