Every man who has ever played Darry Curtis is absolutely perfect in the role to me, and I'm not sure how to articulate that other than they all bring such a perfect yet individual vibe to him.
Like, when I see book Darry in my head, I see a very fine mix of Patrick and Boyd in the face. Patrick's body is perfect (which we all know) for Darry, but Brent just gives him that towering sense he has in the books. I'm not sure how tall Brent is irl, but he seems massive to me.
I love how much they expand on Darry in the musical, and Brent really brings that festering rage that's starting to bubble over. Patrick's portrayal is absolutely iconic to me, but Brent's acting in the musical really brings home that "sad, angry, 20 year old kid" vibe.

Ponyboy describing the other Greasers: Yeah Johnny is a sad puppy, but he is my bff, my brother Soda is like so angelic looking and my favorite person, Dally lowkey scares me but he’s tough and loyal, Darry is cold but good looking and smart and athletic and Two-Bit is a kleptomaniac but he’s fun to be around.
Ponyboy describing Steve Randle:

A rant about Dally
In my head I know WHY they cast Matt Dillon as Dally but I wish more than anything else they had cast an actor more accurate to his book description. Like, give me an ugly ass dude with white blonde hair, not only because I feel like it would make the fandom take his character more seriously but because him being canonically described as ugly repeatedly is not just because Ponyboy is kind of a hater, it's actually narratively important. In the book the attractive characters are SEEN to get away with more, pretty privilege is a thing, even in the book (ie. Soda trying to lift a cop's gun and not getting in trouble, all the Curtis brother's being in the paper because it's 'good public appeal'). The whole point of Dally's character is that he had it rough and he has NOTHING, nothing has ever been easy for him or handed to him and because of that he's become cold and hardened and cutthroat. Ugly Dally in canon would never have a judge or jury go easy on him because of his looks (yes, this is actually something that happens- attractive people get more lenient sentences and often less jail time than unattractive people), he could never charm his way into ANYTHING, he would never be given the benefit of the doubt. Let's be real, if Dally actually looked like Matt Dillon he probably would have been able to do/get away with all those things. If canon Dally was handsome like Sodapop he could have got away with stuff easier (to a certain degree). Even within fandom space, there probably wouldn't be half as many Dally apologists if the actor wasn't as attractive as he is. Just, ugh, LET DALLY BE UGLY. It was narratively important and important to me and hollywood needs to let characters be ugly because not everyone looks like a movie star.
