Skin tone swatches, for use as a resource.
Spudfuzz on Deviantart made the original resource, which I modified to be a bit more realistic. She gave me permission to post this.
☛These swatches, like all art resources, should be used as a “jumping off point!” All colours are relative, and change with lighting conditions. As they are now, these swatches work best for adoptables, character lineups, and other art where local colour is important. ☚

some tips on drawing figure skating positions for non-figure skaters, from an ex-figure skater with 10 years of experience
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
these are all the most basic versions of these positions of course. there’s a lot of different types of spirals and sit spins. some other notes i didn’t add:
on ALL spirals, the standing leg is always straight. if it’s bent, they’re doing something else/fucking up a spiral.
air positions get tighter the more revolutions the jump is. some single jumps (like waltz jumps) don’t even really have an air position. if they do, the bottom leg is straight, but instead of crossing over the left leg, it’s just bent in front of you. the arms might be in, they might be out, idk no one cares that much about singles lmao
if they’re in a performance, they’re looking up at the audience. remember, figure skating is performed in stadiums; rather than simply looking out, a figure skater has to look up to appear to be addressing their audience. they’re probably just doing it for show and focusing on their program, but the motion is still there.
if you’re in practice, however, you’re probably looking up at the skaters around you to make sure you don’t fucking crash into everyone on the ice surface. self-explanatory.
your face will literally never look good mid-jump or spin.
not technically figure skating, but pairs have more jumps and higher lifts than ice dance. there’s a specific rule regarding this, but since i never did either, i don’t know it.
this definitely wasn’t a vague at the yuri on ice fandom. okay, it was, but i’m mostly excited that so many people are paying attention to figure skating now, so y'all are chill.
just remember: head up, arched back, extended leg is probably straight. draw with motion. if you don’t know what a position’s supposed to look like, don’t just look at references; you can even google the test requirements for a specific jump/spin/move if you want to. (ISI is a good place to start, since they’re international and everyone uses pretty much the same criteria for individual moves anyways.)

Hey you know the post you made about design doll? I want to get into animation and stuff and I was wondering what good (free) programs to use. I have a Mac and design doll doesn't work :( is there any other places to download good apps?
I wish I had a suggestion for similar programs, but I don’t. :( I’m sorry I didn’t mention it only being for Windows. The thought that different versions were a thing didn’t even cross my mind until I saw people mentioning it in reblogs.
These aren’t the same thing, but here are two websites that may still be useful:
http://www.kineman.com/ lets you pose a skeleton in a similar way to DesignDoll
Here’s an archive of sketches and studies done by animation studios.
Posemaniacs lets you reference poses at different angles and rotate them.
Does anyone know of any programs that work like DesignDoll and work on Mac?

any tips on how to feel better about your art? and how to not feel as though you're getting worse?
hi anon :) I can assure you that you aren’t getting worse. It may feel that way because your ‘eye’ could be improving. You start to realize your own mistakes and if something isn’t drawn correctly so the outcome of your drawings may look wrong to you in general. Although it is frustrating, you will eventually fix your mistakes overtime. Its sort of a loop really, but worth it because improvement is being made.
Criticizing your own art is a good thing, but do it incorrectly and you will slowly start to hate what you are drawing. You need to look at your drawings and notice anything that youve struggled with or looks entirely wrong. After that, you take it one step at a time and practice each part individually. It’s like a puzzle piece. You can’t draw a full body (you can but its unlikely that it will look right) without knowing how to draw a face, legs, arms, torso, etc. correctly. It can be a little tedious but you’ll learn to love practicing or do figure drawings. Use it as a way to relax and don’t be too hard on yourself. You’ve got all the time you need, there’s no rush to become what you want to become.
Keep your inspiration available to you and filtered. Be clear with what your goals are and keep those goals small. Ask your favorite artists for any tips that you need help with. I hope I helped :)

Free! Big Bang?!
Hello everyone! We are Supernova Kiiori, London Zarra, Jaimie Faythe and Tamzyn Rowtrin and we welcome you to the first ever Free Big Bang! After being in the Free! fandom for nearly three years now, we believe the creative side of its fandom deserves some highlighting. So, we made the executive, and probably very stupid decision, to host a Big Bang. This Big Bang is something we are genuinely looking forward to. Having participated in Big Bangs ourselves, we can guarantee that, whilst they can be rather stressful, they are very rewarding and enjoyable to partake in.
Free! has an undeniably large and diverse fandom, with a lot fanwork and (somehow) even more fanservice. Consequently, we have been idly toying around with the idea of hosting a Big Bang for quite some time. After Nova’s older sister found out, she told them ‘you have to do it Nova’, and voila. Here we are.
But guys, we hear you cry, what is a Big Bang? As listed on this blog (second box in the sidebar), a Big Bang is where a collection of people in a fandom come together to create a fanfiction/fanart pair. Well, that’s great and all, you cry again, but what is the Free! Big Bang? The FBB (convenient acronyms are convenient) is exactly that, just centred on anything and everything Free! To put this in the most cliché way that we can tolerate, the FBB is a way to bring together you and your fellow people through hard work, determination and a common interest. However, in this case, that common interest is scarily attractive, half naked and animated Japanese teenagers. It’s not as creepy as it sounds, we promise.
Because we got our act together not too long ago, we are still very new to this, so please bear with us!
Anyway, if you feel like participating or just taking a look around, feel Free! (See what we did there? No? Oh.) There will be more posts explaining things in more detail within the next week, so please be patient. Thank you so much for reading this post, and feel Free! (sorry, we did it again) to ask ask if you get curious about anything.
-Supernova, London, Jaimie and Tamzyn.

Ok so it maybe appear that the way I draw bodies is really vague and wishy washy because it’s like “oh hey you’re not even using skeletons and such?!?! THAT MUST BE THE WAY TO DO IT???” Let me tell you that is not. The only reason I draw this way is because I have spent years and years drawing skeletons and drawing bodies that I have developed a pretty good sense (still wonky sense sometimes since my anatomy is no where near perfect) of how the body works that I’m able to just visualize a position and kind of sketch it out. This was only developed through practice, my friends. You can’t begin to understand how to draw the body until you understand how the body WORKS. So seriously, just draw tons of bodies, keep drawing them. Trust me, the bodies I drew when I first started out, and even to this day on many occasions, were horrible, stiff, and disproportionate. I do have one tip though, BE FLUID WHEN YOU DRAW BODIES. Don’t try and make lines crisp and clean from the get go. Bodies are expressive and gestural. Anyway I hope that helped a little……..

shading colour tips
hey yall its me the Art Mom™ to help you shade pretty
rule 1: DO NOT SHADE WITH BLACK. EVER. IT NEVER LOOKS GOOD.
red- shade with a slightly darker shade of purple
orange- slightly darker and more saturated shade of red
yellow- i think like..a peach could work but make it a really light peach
green- shade with darker and less saturated shade of blue or teal
blue- shade with purple
purple- a shade thats darker than the purple you’re using and maybe a little pink (MAYBE blue)
pink- darker shade of red
white- a really light lavender or blue..or i guess any really light colour??
black- okay listen dont use pure black to colour anything unless you want to leave it with flat colours because you cant really shade black lol
grey- a slightly darker shade of purple or blue (less saturated)
brown- slightly darker and less saturated shade of purple or red
aaaaand thats all i got lol. let me know if there is anything i should add to this list!!

Late last year I wanted to start a series of short tutorials called Tip Jar, as a way of saying thanks to my fans and giving back to my patrons. This is the first of the series I have made, showing my technique on quickly filling in lineart so you can get to painting without coloring outside the lines faster.
Someday I hope to turn these into video tutorials when I have the income and the time, but for now I hope that I will be able to share useful tips in this infographic format.
