btvs group rewatch episode 5: never kill a boy on the first date (aka my thoughts during the episode, this will contain spoilers for the series)

no slayer exposition preamble this week. i think it comes back, but it shows a level of trust in the audience that is definitely earned after five episodes

so. many. prophecies. it’s wild how many there are this season and how there’s (at least comparatively) hardly any going forward

oh owen. this kid perfectly sets up buffy’s later interest in riley, and i actually wish he could’ve come back in a later season (season 7 looking at you) maybe as a vampire given his newfound interest in living a dangerous life at the end of the ep

owen’s “who else” was delivered with so much sincerity it was wonderful and made me laugh out loud

look, i get that buffy is deeply hurt seeing owen and cordelia dance, but does she also not see how deeply uncomfortable he looks

xander is deeply annoying in this episode it is nearly unbearable. BE HAPPY FOR YOUR FRIEND

hi uh i keep seeing this being debated on tiktok and as your resident adult with a history of infertility who knows just.. way too much about pregnancy and hcg tests: if you are capable of getting pregnant, you really REALLY need to understand how drugstore pregnancy tests work. if there is a line, no matter how faint, that test is POSITIVE. I’ve seen people test positive and get a negative or start their period a few days later and be like “it must have been a false positive”. actual false positives are extremely rare. what most likely happened is something called a ‘chemical pregnancy’ which is when an egg is fertilized but does not implant in the uterus so the pregnancy does not continue. that positive test was not faulty or false, it was just an early test.

if you think you might be pregnant, get your hands on a test. you don’t need the fancy digital ones. the ones you can buy at places like the dollar tree work just as well. buy a few and take one every day until your period comes on if you need to. if there is a FAINT line you aren’t sure about (sometimes tests have something called an indent that makes a shadow that can be mistaken as a very very faint line), test again the next day. as a general rule, morning is the best time to test for most people.

in a post-roe america, is it vitally necessary that you know and understand that because if you intend to terminate, your window is incredibly small in most states and by the time you’ve missed a period or begun to suspect you might be pregnant, there’s a decent chance you are past the cutoff. please please please educate yourselves on this because it could mean the difference between you having access to the healthcare that you need.

btvs group rewatch episode 4: teacher’s pet (aka my thoughts during the episode, this will contain spoilers for the series)

the difference between dream buffy and real buffy is so telling when it comes to not only how he perceives himself but also how he perceives her. while buffy is a feminine character, the way she is styled in the dream sequence is reminiscent of the way faith dresses her when she’s body swapped with buffy

watching dr gregory die never gets any easier, no matter how many times i see the episode. rip to a real one

i have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of me being grossed out about xander this episode (this particular instance is from the convo with blaine at the bronze)

look, i’m aware that french is actually a giant praying mantis demon trying to roofie xander AND that nicholas brendon was a nearly 30 year old man at the time of filming however xander is, at the very most, SIXTEEN YEARS OLD. the scene with the martinis is truly disturbing.

love carlisle, what a man (we never see him or hear his voice and yet he is extremely iconic)

first hint that xander’s home life is less than stellar: him telling his mom that he’s going to a teacher’s house to work on a project and her being chill enough about it to not only allow it to happen but to report it to willow as if it’s a normal, chill thing to do

episodes like this make me very thankful for the 90s special effects bc if this episode featured a hyper realistic giant praying mantis i would have a conniption

for all the things i don’t like about this episode, watching buffy kill the she mantis in silhouette is a major highlight

btvs group rewatch episode 3: witch (aka my thoughts during the episode, this will contain spoilers for the series)

ooo buffy’s mismatched earrings in the first scene

the evolution of witches in buffy is something that genuinely needs to be studied. the contrast between this episodes witch and the vibes of later witches are so different

SO smart for the first episode after the two part pilot to be a non vampire monster of the week. makes good on giles’ line from the end of last episode about all different kinds of creatures coming to/already existing in sunnydale

not even five minutes in and we’ve hit my least favorite part of this episode: the way catherine/amy (and everyone around her) talks about her body. did not age well at all (especially the line at the end about getting fat like it’s the best act of revenge), even if it’s supposed to be commentary on catherine’s warped mindset rather on amy herself

some of my favorite lines of season one in the library scene (slayer/slayerettes, laughing at then hiding from danger)

i love that buddy takes a naked snapple out of the fridge so they don’t have to pay for brand placement
