“Well,” he repeated the Spy’s word and turned his head to give him a glance of amusement. It wasn’t difficult for him to come up with the conclusion that the other would rather not have him around. That was easily enough seen when he first approached and, truly, he couldn’t blame him. He wasn’t ignorant of the awkwardness one would have after a bout of rejection.
“I have worried your ear enough, mm? I believe I should search for my company while leaving you to your own. Nonetheless, I ah…appreciate your humoring of me with listening to the drivel of an old man.”  The meals definitely had some time to go before they would be delivered to the tables. During the wait he could look for his companion.
Scooting the chair back, he pushed to his feet and took a moment to button his jacket before he gave a subtle nod to the Spy. “If I do not see you again, I wish you well on your future endeavors.” He paused and let a thin smile come to his lips. “Unless, of course, those endeavors happen to be you stabbing me in the back. In that case, I hope you miss each strike.”
Konstantyn let out a small hum which could have been anything at that statement. He still found things awkward with the doctor after that bout of magical spell that made him infatuated with the RED. But, he couldn’t have him absent from his wedding unfortunately. Not since Miss Falkner was Eli’s doctor and guest. Not since this doctor was Miss Falkner’s beau and she had been given a plus one. The Spy didn’t really want to talk about the possibility of his two not-so-liked people getting together.
His lips pursed slightly at the mention of regret in trying. He didn’t want to find himself thinking that years, or even weeks, down the track. As happy as he was with the idea of marriage with Angus, his heart was very fragile in the matter. He did not want his heart broken again like the broken close friendship between Ida and himself. In fact, he had been so anxious over it, he hadn’t even sent an invitation to his old friend to give her a chance to reject it. He didn’t want it to be seen as a slap in the face after what he knew of his Father’s wishes of her and himself.
“Well….” he said but never finished the thought. Lunch was definitely taking its time. He wished it would hurry so they wouldn’t have to make idle chit-chat on a topic that was suddenly making this tight feeling in his chest that wouldn’t go away. He wished to leave to get some air, but that would be rude before the meal arrived, so the Spy did his best to relax by breathing deeply.

“Well that is not a far leap, Soldier. You come across battles that cannot be won practically every week.” He gestured toward the outside of the base, speaking of the battles they often do for territory. It didn’t cross his mind that the other was speaking of outside of the base, far from the safety net that was the respawn system. To him, the man just didn’t seem like that kind of person.
“I will need luck in just figuring out something.” An amused smile came to his lips, soon to be covered by the tilting of the mug. He swallowed down a good portion of the coffee now that it was cool enough and leaving a good quarter or so in the bottom, he set it down upon his knee.
“Thank you for wandering with me today. I need to get acclimated with the weather and having company makes it easier. Keeps my mind off of my extremities freezing up.” Lifting his warm fingers to his ear, he rubbed the shell slowly. Even if they were thawed out, they still felt a little numb from the cold.
"Hey Doc' " came a voice of a very familiar soldier from behind the RED medic, after which a small red-black-white feather was presented. "Found in the package this among the things I ordered a few weeks back. Donno how it got there but I got nothing to do with it. Figured you'd like it more than the trash bin".
Tucking his scarf into his jacket, he paused in his wanderings to glance back toward the Soldier and turned to face him with a faint smile. “A feather?” He plucked it from the other’s fingers to look it over then chuckled softly.
“If I am to be honest, I was never truly fond of birds.” Or animals at all, to be precise. Still, he tucked the colorful feather into the breast pocket of his jacket before digging out his gloves.
“I was thinking of going for a walk. I could use a little company, if you have nothing better to do?”

“I suppose I do not,” he murmured to the empty room with a soft frown. He thought about going out to the garage again to implore him to rethink his decision, but the Soldier was making it very oblivious that he would rather be left alone and Hans was never the one to step over boundaries. Even if they seemed very out of character with the way they were thrown up so suddenly. Whatever was wrong had him acting differently. The Psychologist in him ran over several possibilities, attempting to analyze the situation before he shut off that mode of thinking with a slow exhale.
“Happy New Year.” Raising the glass as a cheer, he tipped it to his lips, drinking down the alcohol without as much as a pause. He had been prepared to celebrate the changing of the year by himself since everyone else was out partying in their own way, and while the brief company was welcomed and wanted, it all fell back to that expected solitude.
The glass was filled again as he glanced over to the one the Soldier left behind. Not wanting it to go to waste, he slid it closer and leaned back again, resting the bottle back to the table. Drinking by himself was never entertaining, especially since he wasn’t much of a drinker to begin with. He glanced to the door, considering making his way to his room, but it was warm in here with the fireplace going. Relaxing as much as he could, he brought the glass to his lips for a slow swallow.
Maybe another glass or two and he’ll return to his room. If he could walk steadily, anyway. Champagne was stronger than wine and would likely hit him quickly.
New Year’s Eve.

He chuckled softly and shifted his weight to cross his legs again. “I was not implying that we remain at the library, Soldier. I’m sure the people there will not like it much if we stayed for too long. If the weather is not too terrible, we can return here and lounge. I would not be too opposed to that.” The other felt like a furnace and there was nothing wrong with taking advantage of it for an hour. If that. He just might end up boring the other with his choice of book and he’d put an end to the reading.
“Do you have any new year’s resolutions?” The question was completely out of the blue, yet it had been something that was on his mind for a few days now. It was tradition, and something he tended to participate in. Did he succeed in upholding them? Well, that was another matter all together.
“I have decided to attempt to keep them.” The corners of his mouth lifted and he shook his head. “If I can even think of any I would want to—or need to—uphold.”

“I simply do not think that such things are meant for me.” Again he could have gone on with the reason behind his assumption but, currently, that was nothing he wanted to express. Especially not with someone that was speaking with him out of the necessity to be polite. Hans wasn’t blind, nor did he think that there wasn’t some soreness left over from his rejection long ago.
Well, rejection or giving that gifted car to his companion. No surprise he kept the rest of the things. The Spy had good taste, after all.
“Mm, this is true. Though you just might have regrets that you tried after all.” A soft chuckle came to his throat and he turned his attention from the gathered to glance over toward the Spy. “The joys of the unknown. Either way, I believe we are in no hurry to commit to any decision just yet.”
Harmed? the Spy thought. Now that was a little worrying. But then he realised that it probably wasn’t physical harm but mental harm that the doctor was talking about. The hurt that secrets and lies could cause when the truth came out. And that was possible.
But, lately he had been sharing even some of those secrets of his past with Angus, especially his past with Calida. To the doctor’s words however he couldn’t think of anything to say so he kept quiet. The next two sentences however, he found a response.
“You won’t have to imagine for long if a proposal comes up and the other agrees.” He toyed with the cultery as he thought of his future life with his soon-to-be-husband. “I couldn’t imagine being married to someone like Angus. The class difference for one thing, and business isn’t quite his strong point… And yet, here we are.”
He aligned the cutlery back to its position. “Sometimes you just have to take a chance, or it’s lost forever. If you try and it doesn’t work out, at least you wont’ have any regrets not trying.”

Bringing the glass to his lips for another drink, he paused and glanced over toward the Soldier at the resigned note in his voice. It couldn’t be said that he knew exactly what the man was looking for. The majority of the events there were nothing but a blur. It wasn’t easy to give a simple answer when it definitely wasn’t that simple; he didn’t have capacity for it. Faces blurred together, places. Even periods of time were out of order or completely forgotten. He could have met a dozen commanders and their bodyguards or just one pair, and he wouldn’t have recalled it. He mentioned as much and it didn’t seem to be the answer the other wanted.
“I do not know how you want me to answer, Emmerich.” Lowering his hand he rested the bottom of the glass against his thigh and absently nudged his glasses back up the bridge of his nose with a light touch of his fingertip. “You asked if we knew each other before and I do not think we have. You ask if I remember a commander and his bodyguard, which leads me to believe you were either one or the other and, again, I do not remember. You are not familiar to me what so ever.” Finding little to no interest in his drink, he leaned forward and set it down.
“There is plenty I do not recall, and it is likely best that way.” As he leaned back, he tucked his finger into the knot of his tie, loosening it slightly. The air was beginning to feel a little stifling. “We both did what we had to do and it is in the past, mm?” Exhaling a slow sigh, he dropped his arm back to his stomach and set the other along the back of the couch in an attempt to remain relaxed despite the vaguely closed off body language he displayed. While he didn’t want to speak of anything he might recall, he had attempted to answer to the best of his ability.
“Is it that you do not feel like being in the base, or you do not feel like being right here?” He lifted a brow at him and tilted his head a touch to the side. “You know very well going out into that blizzard is dangerous and you do not strike me as someone to do something that suicidal for the sake of escaping this place.”

We have history. That has weight. It has meaning. And you of all people know that just because something is in the past doesn’t mean it’s dead and buried.
