This section is hilarious but I need to explain why.

Pico Della Mirandola is often written about as Marsilo Ficino's student or protegee. In reality they fucking hated each other. Ficino saw himself as the True Receiver of Classical Knowledge, and Pico saw him as a sophmoric idiot working from shoddy translations.

They constantly sent each other catty letters where they bragged about having some new, undiscovered, original text that completely invalidates the work of the other.

Here, Pico is bragging that he came across an original copy of the Chaldean Oracles, a collection of ancient near-eastern Greek spiritual texts. He got it from his teacher Flavius Mithridates.

Flavius Mithridates was a converso famous for translating texts wrong on purpose to make his patrons happy. This is the renaissance academia equivalent of bragging about your awesome new high-quality copper from your best friend Ea Nasir.

Friendly reminder that Holmes provided Watson with a mystery, a distraction that Watson desperatly needed. Friendly reminder that Watson showered Holmes in praise when he was so unused to it. Friendly reminder that Holmes let Watson write about his life, and Watson helped him through crippling drug addiction.

They're both broken men who begin to heal in the presence of each other. They built their lives around each other, encouraged each other, comforted each other. If they hadn't met, their lives would have been worse for it.
