This blogsite is the result of student work completed in the Kansas City Art Institute Spring 2015 course, Selfie and Other. Throughout the course of the semester, students explored issues of identity and representation by examining self-portraiture and selfies as created by artists and individuals. Class discussions revolved around how artists represent difference in visual media, and how social media has changed the way we view and interact with others. In addition to papers and exams, each student in the course created a series of selfies with an accompanying artist statement, which can be found on this site. Students also investigated the work of another artist or group and wrote short research statements on their selected images. It is our hope as a class that this site will spur people to think further about self-portraiture and self-representation, and the role of selfies in contemporary culture.
