Writing is weird.

Today I have a draft of a novel that is ready for querying, give or take some gentle poking. But it's taken five years and five drafts. It's taken times where I've given up, which felt like losing a part of myself. And times where I've picked it up and started again, which have felt like staring at a peak from the base of a mountain. And times when I've wanted to give up and haven't. And times when the emotions of my characters have seemed to bleed into my own. For five years.

And today I finished it, in my living room, on my sofa, with a few texts coming in from work reminding me to chase some poor soul's payment on an invoice.

My characters went on this incredible life-changing journey. Maybe I did too. But no one noticed. I don't really know what you do with that.

the only time i get inspiration to write is when i have something really really important coming up like

okay this paper is literally due in two days and i haven't started this is terrible i really need to focus on this this is super important i can't get distracted by anything

my brain: i fixed that plot hole :D

What I try to keep in mind while writing - my readers are smart. They don't need every little thing explained, they will fill in the gaps themselves.

I want to be a better writer, but it's hard when it's:

• 5% cool shit that you think of

• 95% filler to justify the cool shit

i feel like this is partially my fault (it is) because i keep wanting to write, which i do, and then i go to tumblr to rant about wanting to write but having no time when instead i could have just. written. instead of going on tumblr.

absolutely love abusing the power that comes with 3rd person limited pov and just ignoring things and being vague sometimes. does the character know all the details? no? then I don't have to either.
