I could write a dissertation about this and instead only have time for a few paragraphs but. Looking back on Psych with more knowledge about neurodiversity and how people feel about actually being around folks with neurodiversity-related traits…
I have a LOT of feelings about how Gus has so many of the autistic (and some ADHD) traits that people find annoying and grating and get pissed off about (correcting people, infodumping, dropping special interests into unrelated conversations, rigidity in folllowing rules, etc) and Shawn has so many of the ADHD (and some autistic) traits that people find annoying etc (physical and verbal hyperactivity, jumping between tasks and jobs and so forth, habitual lying, interrupting in conversation, etc), BUT
With each other they sort of… build their relationship around those things, instead of treating them as Problems. Gus corrects incorrect things and Shawn forgets correct things (or habitually lies or etc) so they build an entire recurring bit around the situation where those traits intersect (“I’ve heard it both ways”) that turns it from a source of conflict into a shared in-joke ritual. When Shawn starts up one of his elaborate lies Gus immediately swings into commit to the bit back-up mode. Shawn treats Gus’s infodumping as a social strategy.
They balance each others’ extremes without genuinely resenting each other for needing that. Gus is overly rigid about rule-following, Shawn is overly impulsive about rule-breaking, and they pull each other towards a more sustainable middle ground. Gus is overly fond of routine and risks stagnation, Shawn is overly prone to starting and then abandoning things, between them they’re able to form a life that’s interesting and includes novelty but isn’t unlivably chaotic. (We see what happens with that one when they’re not together to balance each other out! During the time they were apart, Shawn had a jillion jobs and quit all of them, while Gus became a dead-eyed pharmaceutical salesman with zero, like, Upward Mobility.)
And then of course there are the traits they share! They both clearly have echolalia and a drive to stim, for instance, and instead of policing each other they just periodically break into random dances and vocal exercises and “singing” and general sensory-seeking nonsense together, matched to each other.
I just??? The fact that they visibly display all those autistic and ADHD traits that drive other people crazy but instead of being a wedge between them that’s exactly why they’re perfect for each other… and how it’s not that it doesn’t ever cause them annoyance because they’re just like naturally soulmates who never get annoyed by anything about each other, but that they’ve worked out rituals and strategies so that what maybe bothered them in the past now instead is a shared bonding activity, or acts to balance their weaknesses against each other…
Just. Got Dam, that’s the dream

+ bonus: Detective Dobson... what can I say? We didn't get to speak nearly as much as I ever would have liked, but I heard more about you than anyone ever could. And you sound heroic. The kind of guy that I could have worshipped as a child and an adolescent. Well into my 20's.

Burton "Gus" Guster. Character of all time. His middle name should be "Yes And". He is ride or die but he will kvetch about it. He is literally screaming crying throwing up. He's divorced. He has strong opinions about Pluto. He almost joined a cult. He claims his bestie on his taxes. He can tap dance and sing like a pro. He blogs about marine animals. He has so many niche interests. His bestie had to blackmail his boss to allow him to continue running around solving crime. He accurately deciphered the text message "binshot not lol". He went undercover as a model. He's not over losing the spelling bee as a child. He owns a shirt advertising cold sore medicine. He drove a stolen car to San Francisco to be with his bestie and only turned around 12 times. He's a sympathetic crier.

i've been rewatching psych (as i'm sure you could guess) and three things are really standing out to me on this rewatch
the amount of times gus and shawn have to literally go "no homo" in a situation that really can't be explained any other way is just like. at this point it'd be less gay for them to just have sex
obviously henry is sort of an asshole and a bad parent in a lot of ways, despite his best intentions, but in spite of that, even when their relationship is at it's worst in the show, it's crazy to me how much shawn and henry just like each other. yes we haven't spoken in over a year, now i'm in your house, taking your stuff, of course you're cooking me food, yes we're talking about cases but there's just a lot of - casual hanging out? i really do think despite everything that they had a good relationship until the divorce and falling back into that is easier than not. their relationship is actually the most insane, convoluted parent-child relationship on tv and i'm standing by that, but the undercurrent of like that it has is what i think makes it so interesting instead of just the classic love and hate
they did juliet so dirty by having her think that shawn was really psychic. that makes her the only one in the main cast that shawn fooled, which is just. uncomfortable. and doesn't even make any sense! she's better than that. the only one that should actually think shawn is psychic is buzz and only because he's thinks it's impolite to think that his friends are liars

Maybe it's just that I've been paying more attention but season 3 of Psych feels like a definite improvement. The first two seasons were fun, don't get me wrong, but s3 was banger after banger after banger

If you genuinely, truly, absolutely, cannot bring yourself to vote for the president of the united states, please just show up for elections anyway and vote for your congresspeople and local representatives.
Please.
Just.
If you cannot bring yourself to vote for the president because he's so disgusting of a candidate you morally cannot bring yourself to cross that line, then PLEASE vote for your congresspeople and local representatives who can block, defend, or present new bills, actions, acts, etc.
These are the people who can actually confirm or deny or impede horrendous acts when they happen.
Like. This is the bare minimum. If you cannot vote for the President, please just still vote for someone.
Change doesn't happen if you don't vote for the people willing to enact change.

You see, Shawn, my life's goal has always been to commit the perfect crime. I've always thought of my heists as... elegant. Victimless. But you made me feel somehow... regretful. You genuinely wanted me to be the greatest thief that ever lived. Well, gentlemen, I need you to know that I am capable of all the things you thought I could do and more.

The reason Psych is the Important Show of All Time is because it said "friendship is the MOST important thing." Like, yes, the romances were good but the show spends even more time emphasizing and developing the friendships and that's why it rocks. Lassiter and Juliet love and support each other unconditionally without even the slightest whiff of romance and it is SO. REFRESHING. When Juliet almost dies, Lassie sacrifices his favorite gun to save her without any hesitation. He's the one there to hold her while she cries. She's his confidant. She leaves everything she knows behind so he can chase his dream of being chief without reprocussion. That's a deep, wholesome kind of platonic love. They also never had Shawn be jealous of how close Jules and Lassie are - instead, in the final episode, we see Shawn thanking Lassie for loving and supporting Juliet. We simply don't do that jealousy crap here. Lassie and Jules are best friends and that's an excellent thing. And then there's Shawn and Gus. Those characters are narratively and physically inseperable. The show makes it VERY clear that, without the other, neither one is complete. They balance each other and exacerbate each other's hijinks at the same time. They're closer than close and everyone around them just accepts it. It's just the way those two dumb boys are and no one is going to try to get between that. And then, of course, SO many friendships develop over the course of the show. Lassie and Shawn form a begrudging friendship eventually. Juliet and Karen end up bonding more than I think either expected. Friendship is the beating heart of this series and it's presented in a way that is unique and fun and I just don't see a lot of other shows that do it like Psych did.
