harry potter in 2025? really fascinating how so many people are super into fanon hp stuff (basically entirely divorced from the source) but can't actually leave the fandom behind. instead of moving to literally anything else you are ultimate still tied to a series by an author actively helping destroy trans rights. genuinely incomprehensible. this isn't even a hate anon I'm just really confused.

I can definitely understand why being a queer/liberal person in the hp fandom can be hypocritical, and there are some people who do still support jkr behind closed doors. For me, the hp and marauders fandom have become an incredibly safe space rich with representation as a clear "fuck you" to jkr and her supporters. She HATES this fandom, and that alone makes me feel a little better about being part of it. From a fiscal perspective, I refuse to support her in any way - I don't buy merch, I don't watch the movies, anything that could make it's way back to her I staunchly avoid.

I know some people have problems with the fact that the series, and by association jkr, is staying relevant largely because of the fandom. I try my absolute hardest not to bring in new fans by staying quiet about the series and not wearing merch or posting about it to avoid spiking someone's curiousity. If I do talk about the series, its only with people who are already in the fandom space, and I lead with the disclaimer that I do not support jkr in any way. If I find out someone I know is wanting to get into the fandom, I give them a rundown of jkrs policies and how to navigate being in the fandom while not actually supporting her, including loaning my copies of the books (most of which I got secondhand or as gifts in elementary school, when I was too young to be politically aware).

If being part of the fandom makes you uncomfortable, then you don't have to participate, and if you see someone supporting jkr, please hold them accountable (kindly! some people really don't know better). I'll always have a small level of discomfort, and I have distanced myself from the fandom more in years past, but I feel as though so long as fans consume the media responsibly and put in effort to support marginalized communities, it's okay to enjoy something that makes you happy

“Are you sure about this?”

Pandora asked, peeking her head around the corner, “You know we don’t have to go if you don’t want to. I promise they won’t be offended if we cancel.”

Pandora moved into the bathroom, stepping forward to wrap her arms around Lily’s waist and pulled her close in a casual but comforting embrace. “I can always tell them we spent the day in bed, so wrapped up with eachother that we lost track of time.”

In spite of the nerves twisting her stomach into knots, Lily couldn’t help but laugh at that. It would not be the first time they were late or had to cancel plans for that exact reason. After about a year of dating their friends were getting sick of the excuse and claimed they were waiting for ‘the honey moon phase’ to pass, but the couple knew they didn’t really mind it.

“A believable excuse, but an unnecessary one. We’ve put this double date off long enough.”

Lily smiled sweetly, leaning in more to place a soft kiss on her partner’s cheek.

The boardgame cafe was busy when the girls walked. Lily briefly wondered if this was the universe giving her an out, but before she could think about it too long, a tall, platinum blonde man stood up and waved them over.

That would be Xenophilius Lovegood. Pandora’s Ex and Peter Pettigrew’s boyfriend. Lily followed Pandora through the cafe and over to the table, sliding into the booth next to her girlfriend and trying desperately to avoid making akward eye contact with Peter.

Lily knew Peter better than she did Xeno. Which wasn’t hard, she supposed as she had never met the later. Peter on the other hand, well- she wouldn’t say they were close, but they did share a best friend-Remus Lupin- in common and occasionally ran in the same circles back during their school days. He and Xeno had only been dating for five months now, and had been asking the girls to hangout with them for more than a few weeks now.

She liked Pete enough and was really quite happy for him, but playing board games with her girlfriend’s ex and his new boyfriend was an intimidating thought. They had put it off for as long as they could, and Lily was determined to push through and maybe even enjoy herself- for Pandora’s sake. The breakup had been as mutual as possible, Pandora and Xeno remaining not only friends, but close ones at that.

After the couples ordered their drinks and exchanged pleasantries, Pandora volunteered to pick out the first game, jumping up out of her seat and pulling Lily along with her.

“If at any point tonight you’re uncomfortable, just give me a sign and we’ll leave. No questions asked, okay?”

Lily hummed in agreement, leaning down a bit to rest her head on Pandora’s shoulder. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for this girl, and the casual reassurance was more than enough to raise her spirits- and hopes- for the night. They returned to the table shortly, fingers intertwined as their conjoined hands swung rhythmically between them.

The rest of the night flew by quicker than Lily could have imagined. After the first game of Catan, any lingering akwardness had faded completely. Sitting there, playing Rummikub with these people felt like the most natural thing in the world. After another game of Clue, Lily even found herself extending invitations for more double date outings in the future.

But Ron talks back to Snape whenever Snape insults Hermione and Draco shoots down the entire school’s theory that Harry is the Heir of Slytherin. And when things get deadly in the last book, Ron screams “HERMIONE!” at the top of his lungs as she’s being tortured and Draco screams “DON’T KILL HIM!” at the top of his lungs as Crabbe and Goyle are attacking Harry.
