Tour de France 2019, Stage 9
A South African, Daryl Impey, won stage nine of the Tour de France on Sunday leaving local fans to settle for Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe keeping hold of the yellow jersey on Bastille Day. Mitchelton-Scott rider Impey was part of a mass breakaway that quickly opened a 10-minute gap and extended it throughout the race with the pack eventually trailing in 16 minutes adrift.
Defending champion Geraint Thomas and the other overall title contenders finished together in a low-key ending after allowing the 14-man break to open up an uncatchable lead on the 170km run.

Tour de France 2019, Stage 8
Thomas De Gendt soloed to victory on stage eight of the Tour de France in Saint Etienne as Julian Alaphilippe regained the yellow jersey and Geraint Thomas survived a dramatic crash which snapped a team-mate's bike in half.
Lotto-Soudal's Thomas De Gendt was the last survivor of a four-man breakaway on the 230km stage from Macon, and had the power to hold off a late attack from Deceuninck-Quick Step's Alaphilippe and Thibaut Pinot of Groupama-FDJ.
Late in the stage the Team Ineos train was derailed in frightening fashion on a downhill bend, though Thomas was quickly back on his way and caught the peloton on the last of the day's seven categorised climbs.
The Tour continues on Sunday with stage nine, the 170.5km run from Saint-Étienne to Brioude, and concludes in Paris on July 28.

Tour de France 2019, Stage 6
Belgian Dylan Teuns claimed victory on the sixth stage of the Tour de France on the La Planche des Belles Filles summit finish, as Italy’s Giulio Ciccone took the overall lead on Thursday. Bahrain-Merida rider Teuns edged out Ciccone for the stage win after both men were part of a breakaway in the Vosges.
Defending champion Geraint Thomas unexpectedly showed strong early form by beating all of his main overall title rivals on the day. Thomas broke from the main contenders in the final stages of the ultra-tough stage which was as expected decided on the last of seven climbs, as the Welshman gained a few seconds over most of his rivals.
Frenchman Thibaut Pinot, who grew up 30 kilometres from the summit finish was right on Thomas’s tail, losing just a couple of seconds to the champion.
Three of the overall contenders though lost significant time as 2014 champion Vincenzo Nibali, Jumbo Visma captain Steven Kruijswijk and, to a greater extent, Frenchman Romain Bardet suffered on the slopes.

Tour de France 2019, Stage 3
A powerful solo breakaway paid off for Julian Alaphilippe as the Frenchman won both Stage 3 and took the overall lead at the 2019 Tour de France on Monday.
He now wears the race leader’s yellow jersey after it spent two days on the back of Mike Teunissen, who took a surprise win on Stage 1 and managed to hold his lead after his Jumbo–Visma team rode a commanding time trial to win Stage 2.
But Teunissen fell to 72nd in the overall rankings after an exciting stage with three categorized climbs that brought the race from Belgium into France. The 26-year-old Dutchman rode well but was dropped on the final climb of the day.

Tour de France stage 21 Pausing at times along the way for a swig of champagne, Geraint Thomas rode triumphantly into Paris on Sunday evening, completing the final stage of the Tour de France and becoming the first Welshman to win the famed race. “It’s another level to win,” Thomas said Sunday. “It’s insane.” He had repeatedly used the word “overwhelming” as he struggled with the enormity of what he was about to accomplish on Saturday, when the victory was a formality. “I can’t speak. It’s just incredible,” Thomas told NBC on Saturday. After years of being a supportive teammate to other Team Sky riders, like four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome, Thomas’s turn to win his first Tour de France arrived at the age of 32. “I believed I could beat the guys here, but still on the biggest stage, over three weeks, it’s insane. The last time I cried was when I got married. I don’t know what’s happened to me,” Thomas said Saturday, struggling for composure before finally breaking down in tears.
