Okay! Quadrant vacillation is basically when a relationship switches quadrants. Vacillation can occur between any quadrants, although when it involves an ashen triad it often means one member of the triad is entirely broken up with, although sometimes all three will end up in a non-ashen quadrant together as a thruple/polycule (a c3< b, c -> a <3 b, c) or they end up still dating but each pair has a different quadrant (a c3< b, c -> a <> b <3 c <3< a). when the relationship vacillates from another quadrant to the ashen quadrant, generally a new partner is added to the relationship (a <3< b -> c c3< a, b), although if they were in a thruple/polycule in their previous quadrant then they may all vacillate together ( a <3< b, c -> a c3< b, c), and of course there is also the possibility of the auspistice being from another quadrant which vacillated at the same time ( a <> b <3< c -> a c3< b, c). Vacillation can be a one time thing of realizing your feelings either have shifted to or always were in a different quadrant than your current relationship ( a <3 b -> a <3? b -> a <> b), it can be one sided which usually ends in breakups, because it means that both parties want different things out of the relationship (a <3< b -> a <> b, b <3< a -> a </> </3< b) although there are some situations where this could lead to a multi-quadrant relationship ( a <3< b -> a <> b, b <3< a -> a <3< <> b). It can also be a rapid process, where at any given moment it is unclear, sometimes even to those in the relationship, what quadrant they are in (a <3< b -> a <> b -> a <3 b -> a <3< b...). Those relationships are generally regarded to be unstable, but healthy relationships that rapidly vacillate are not impossible, and are actually more common than people think.

That's the best explanation I can give right now, I hope it makes sense! I'm glad you enjoy our blog, and I swear I'm going to try to post more analysis. If you need more clarification, feel free to send another ask! I'm not an expert, and am pretty tired right now, so I totally get it if I explained something poorly. Before i knew i was aroace, i had a "crush" on one of the boys in my class. I was simultaneously angry and disgusted at myself about it, and took it out on said boy. We were both the smartest kids in class, which led to this becoming a constant game of one upmanship. He, of course, noticed my vengefulness, and engaged in this hate /admiration / competitive thing.

Eventually this lead to me discovering more anime and him gaining more useless trivia.

Anyway this was way before i knew homestuck but i still get a little awed about how i discovered kismesis/ ashen relationships before i read homestuck and i think thats very cool even though hussie got it first.

Honestly the only suggestion i can think of is the lego batman movie, but that may be to simple since the movie basically all but literally uses the word kismesis for batman and joker.

Too true. although there are other relationships to analyze!! Plus, simple isn't bad, just because we're mainly here for complicated relationships doesn't mean we won't do the simple stuff too. If you don't mind the mods freaking out over it essentially being a pitch rom-com, then we'll gladly analyze it for you!

RAPID FIRE - TROPES THAT ARE JUST QUADRANTS

Buddy cops - Okay, so hear me out, there are officers of the law, but get this: They’re moirails.

Enemies to lovers - either the pitch quadrant or pitch-flushed vacillation (occasionally platonic enemies to flushed, but it’s very rare.)

The mean trio - (mean girls, heathers, etc.) - Just a (usually dysfunctional) ashen triad.

Friends to lovers - pale flushed vacillation.

The straight man - The comic relief’s moirail (incredibly often)

The rom-com BFF (the one who gets ignored and is overly supportive of their friend) - The protagonists neglected moirail.

Bonus: Most love triangles wouldn’t be a problem if they understood quadrants! There’s normally one love interest and one hate interest!

Phineas and Ferb

Starting with what I’m sure everyone wants to hear, my take on the Doofenshmirtz and Perry. People say that they’re pitch, but the anon who requested this was definitely right, there are pale moments. I however would like to go one step further and say that it looks almost entirely pale to me. If you look at the behaviors that make people think that they’re pitch, it’s all because it’s pretty much therapy for Doof. The schemes and traps and shouts of “curse you Perry the platypus!” aren’t from hatred, it’s because he’s letting go of some past trauma. It’s one of my favorite tropes to be honest (so I’m probably a little biased), the pale couple who looks pitch at first glance. (Note: the only reason why I am saying any quadrants at all is because it is made clear that Perry is sentient, sapient, and capable of clear communication.) Moving on to the other thing anon was right about; there is definitely a multi quadrant pitch/pale/flushed situation happening with Baljeet and Buford. There’s that strange level of comfort mixed with the frequent intimidation that would indicate either very close enemies or kismesissitude. They also have their moments of holding each other back, calming each other down, and otherwise acting like moirails. The flushed part of the equation seems to mainly be in between being pitch and pale, having brief matespritships as a midpoint during vacillation between kismesissitude and moirailleigence.  One of the more obviously shown relationships is Isabella’s flushcrush on Phineas. I don’t think that this one requires too much explanation. It is possible that the relationship may be pale throughout most of cannon, with Isabella trying to vacillate to a flushed relationship. 

Similarly, Candace and Jeremy seem to have a simple flushed relationship, while at times Candace seems a little obsessive it is not much to worry about in the long run, and overall their relationship seems to be a matespritship.

Candace is very close with Stacy, and this could either be just really close friends, or a moirailleigence. There isn’t too much to say for this dynamic except that rarely Candace needs help with her relationship with Jeremy, and although I don’t think it’s hate-based Stacy will step up as a pseudo-auspistice to help keep the pair happy. (some vacillation is normal in any relationship, so sometimes Candace and Jeremy may be actually pitch, with Stacy being their auspistice.) It is clear that regardless of if they’re moirails or not they do mean a great deal to each other, but with how they act the pale quadrant is a safe bet.

Last relationship I’m going to cover in this analysis is Ferb and Vanessa. From their age differences in the main show ( Ferb is around 9-10 and Vanessa is 15-16) it is somewhat uncomfortable for me to say there’s anything there, but in the future when they are both adults they are shown to be dating. We don’t see enough of the relationship to properly categorize it, but because they say they’re together it’s probably concupiscent, and if I had to guess I would probably say flushed.

I probably missed a few things, and constructive criticism is welcome! Tell me what I missed or got wrong, and I hope you all enjoyed!

The Grinch (live action)

This skips ahead so that it’s still relevant. We chose to do the live action version because the original doesn’t have any romance (outside of the metaphorical one). Yes mod ferret is still concussed. Yes they are writing this. They have no concept of self-control or self-care.

On to the analysis!

For starters, the metaphorical romance between the grinch and the spirit of christmas (our dad came up with this one). Originally it’s pitch, however could be considered an ashen triad with Max auspisticizing. This later vacilates to something red. This is, of course, is using romance as a lens through which to view abstract concepts.

As for actual relationships, we have Betty-Lou who and Lou Who (Cindy Lou Who’s parents) in a matespriteship. We don’t see much of their dynamic, but it’s pretty clear what quadrant they’re in.

Betty-Lou and Martha-May(Betty-Lou’s neighbor) seem to be pitch for eachother. The evidence for this is the christmas lights war. It’s all the one-upping and showing off that makes it so clear that there is pitch chemistry. Look at them! they’re peacocking for eachother!

Lou who is probably in a moirailigience with the mayor, because of how much he was hyping him up at the ceremony, and how he shaved his head too when the mayor got his shaved. You just don’t hype up your matesprite or friends like that, so moirailegiance is the only option.

the grinches two moms are matesprites. (diversity win, the grinch was raised by lesbians!)

those two background whos in matching pink candy cane costumes are moirails, and also relationship goals tbh.

Ever since childhood, martha-may has been flushed for the grinch, and the grinch reciprocated these feelings. The mayor was also flushed for martha may, and possibly pitch for the grinch. Later on, the grinch seemed to be more pitch for martha-may, but by the end his feelings change again, and they’re matesprites.

As an adult, it seems more clear that the mayor is pitch for the grinch. The scene where he proposes to martha-may in front of him was that ever-so-risky move of trying to flirt flushed with one person, and pitch with another at the same time. It’s very hard to pull off, and I think in this moment it failed. but the grinch does kiss him on the cheek, so who knows.

Martha may seems unhappy in her matespriteship with the mayor, and breaks it off to be with the grinch instead at the end of the movie.

Now, sidenote time!

Wallow in self-pity (the grinches 4:00 appointment) is actually decently wholesome by alternian standards with the whole love=pity thing.

going through the phone book and yelling that you hate everyone, by name (another grinch activity) would also be sweet as hell.

and lastly, something non-quadrant related, Roast-beast would be so non-specific. like, what kind of beast?
