Just a few pages from my sketchbook. I'm going to work on the Kaleida cover of "99 Luftballons" tonight, and these are some movement sketches / studies in pastel. #sketchbook #abstractart #abstractartist #abstractpainting #aphantasia #aphantasiaart #aphantasiaartist #aphantasiapainting #synesthesia #synesthesiaart #synesthesiaartist #synesthesiapainting #musicalpainting #musicalart #musicalsynesthesia #artofautism #arttherapy #actuallyautistic https://www.instagram.com/p/CgMoX1vOy09/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Vanish 18x24 acrylic and mica powder on canvas. Painted to "Mary Jane" by Alanis Morissette. I will never forget the time I told a boyfriend that I identified with this song. I was 19, and my eating disorder was at its worst. He rolled his eyes and told me to stop being dramatic. We use the phrase "cry for help" with disdain, then act like there was nothing we could have done when someone gives up and tries to vanish. #abstractart #abstractpainting #abstractartist #synesthesia #synesthesiaart #synesthesiaartist #aphantasia #aphantasiaart #aphantasiaartist #eatingdisorderawareness #eatingdisorderrecovery #actuallyautistic #artofautism #alanismorissette https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd4dCuarr3v/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Great Unknown
16x20 acrylic, foil, and mica powder on canvas.

Spray varnish worked really well to fix the loose mica powders! This has now been coated with a layer of brush-on varnish as well, and gold leaf added.
I'm calling this one "The Great Unknown," marking the first time I've actually pulled from the lyrics of the song I'm painting for the title. The actual song is "53 Steps" from Rachel Platten's first album. But the chorus ends with: "As I walk into the great unknown," and that just feels right for this piece.
I had the immense privilege of seeing Rachel open for Tony Luca at Jammin' Java in June of 2011, promoting her album "Be Here." I became obsessed with her voice and her infectious joyfulness, and now I'm one of those "Eh, her early work was better" people when I hear Fight Song or Broken Glass. 😂
And now it's my own joy to finally be able to paint what her music sounds like to me. Expect more coming out soon!

Progress pic on my newest piece, being painted to "53 Steps" by Rachel Platten.
In all of my previous pieces where I've used mica powder, I end up losing a lot of the initial effect when I varnish it. So this time, I'm going to go get some SPRAY varnish, and lock this shit down before I do any more brushing.

Evaporate
16x20 acrylic, foil, and mica powder on canvas. Painted to "Goodbye" by Glenn Morrison featuring Islove.
In this piece I see rising embers, falling snow, and ghostly memories.

Quiet Storm
16x20 acrylic, foil, and mica powder on canvas. Painted to "Loyal Brave True" by Christina Aguilera, from the new Mulan soundtrack.
This was a difficult piece to get to come together, but I'm happy with the end result. I feel this is a piece about the challenge of holding onto oneself in the chaos of the world, and questioning if we are ready for what lies ahead.
