Rootbound Notes
A short journal-style fic in a similar vein to the one I did years ago for Zulrah, but this time for the brand new Varlamore content. Pssst Jagex, you wanna put this one in the game too?
From the personal notes of Doctor Terry Grant, Head of Botany of the Museum of Varrock. These notes are for educational purposes only and the actions taken within these pages should not be replicated in any way, shape, or form. Donated by an anonymous adventurer.
………
My educational excursion to Auburnvale and its accompanying valley is turning out to be one of the most wonderful experiences of my life, second only to documenting the vibrant and stunning life of the Tlati Rainforest. The communal relationship between the human and treefolk residents of this place is truly a sight to see. There is a bond between man and nature here that I have witnessed nowhere else; I cannot wait to study it more closely! And I have a feeling that when I do, Haig shall have a hard time beckoning me back, haha!
………
It has been an honor to observe the rituals the people of Auburnvale have with the ents that wander through their home. This entire valley is a microcosm of the world, the cycle of nature’s birth, decay, and rebirth on display in such a beautiful form. If only I was a better whittler, I would love to participate. Perhaps the ents won’t mind my fletching skills being lackluster in carving their totem offerings. Though, lately I hear one of the children that is unusually in-tune with the treefolk mumbling something about them being a bit sad and out of sorts lately. I wonder what could be wrong. Perhaps the visiting Head of Botany of Varrock could be of assistance!
………
It’s been three weeks since my arrival here, and though I have learned much, I feel as though I still know nothing. Even I, outsider that I am, am beginning to feel a disturbance within the forest. And this morning… I awoke to the sound of a woman screaming. Her brother mysteriously vanished overnight, not a trace of him to be found. The other residents of the vale seemed undisturbed, and when I prompted them with questions, they brushed me off and stated this was a normal occurrence. What absurdity! They will no longer answer my queries, and so I must investigate this alone. A red liquid that could only be described as sap was found staining the missing man’s blankets. Was the culprit… a treefolk? Perhaps this really was a mystery meant for a botanist.
………
I’ve analyzed the mystery sap as best I can, but it’s completely foreign to me, and none of the villagers seem to know what it could be from either. They swear it is from no treefolk, though. When I run tests upon it, the substance seems almost… violent. There’s no other word to describe it. Something is quite wrong with whatever plant this came from. The mystery continues…
………
Another person was abducted in the night, this time a guard. But unlike before, there were more clues left behind: a trail of that red sap. I managed to track it to the mountains west of here, but dared not go farther with the howling of wolves so close by. The villagers tell me the mountains are named the Custodia Mountains and are very dangerous, housing many wolf packs and tricky terrain. It’s certainly no place for a man like me, but I cannot deny my curiosity hungers to know what lies within the rocky pass. My hypothesis? A species of ent adapted for mountain life, and possibly corrupted given its volatile sap, has been taking the people away. But for what purpose, I do not know. The only remaining question is…
…am I brave enough to go find out?
………
No one will accompany me into the depths of the pass. Two guards escorted me beyond the range of the known wolf dens and wished me luck. Part of me knows this is foolish, but the louder part wants answers. There’s a great hole in the mountainside facing north, and it’s very apparent some form of beast lives here; territorial claw marks carve the surface of the stone, laced with red sap. Ents don’t have claws…
From here, the pages are frayed and stained with a mixture of blood and red sap, and many are missing.
………
I write this for sanity now. Or maybe in hopes someone will find it some day and learn from my idiocy. I was wrong. There are no ents here, but there are beasts unlike any I have ever seen before. They are an anomaly in every sense of the word. I hide in the shadows and watch them as I look for a way out. The babies, they appear as nothing but fanged rabbits, but then… Good Saradomin, the transformation I have been forced to witness… Their mothers give them to the plants, vines red as blood that tear through the stone walls and bloom from the floor. They weave into their very flesh and turn them into… into blasphemes of creation. These rabbits, they grow alongside the plant inside them in some twisted kind of symbiotic relationship. They weave through its flesh, split from its skull and form into antlers, and I swear they are all connected, like some kind of hivemind. Or maybe I’ve just begun to go mad… The elders, they stand taller than any man, with claws and fangs sharper than even the Shaikahan! And their hearing is beyond sharp. I fear the demise I might meet if one hears and finds me. I must tread carefully. I must escape. I must…
………
I will not escape. I have found the missing villagers. I know I shall become like them soon. I am already infected. They kneel with their gaze turned toward the stony root-laden heavens above, praying for a salvation that shall never come. They will be one with the vines. They will succumb. Then they will be reborn and walk again, flesh puppets with minds of sap and vine. A microcosm of the world, the cycle of birth, decay, and rebirth on display in such a warped and twisted form. I pray I shall be the last to die here, and that this foul floral blight shall never spread beyond these cavernous walls. If anyone is reading this, I beg of you one final thing.
Burn me.

i recently had the wonderful opportunity to illustrate an original take on one of the FF series’ recurring summons, Ramuh, for @/finalfantasyunion‘s new book on kickstarter!! 🌩
you can back the kickstarter here:
my design thought process under the cut!
so why is ramuh, a woman here? why can’t she be? can’t judgement bolt be cast by a old mystical granny with all the wisdom in the world? ⚡⚡⚡
but in all seriousness, its actually because when i was presented with the list of summons to pick from, i remembered that my mother’s maiden name is 雷, which is the chinese character meaning ‘thunder’!!! its like fate 😂 i had to do this take on ramuh’s design.
i wanted to imagine a future game that has more representation and inspiration from my heritage 😊
and fun fact: the design of the staff in her hand is actually inspired by an old oracle character version of the word 雷.
(info source from here: https://hanziyuan.net/#雷)

"Even gods make mistakes, though his bring him laughter. Even as the lab explodes, Guthix’s latest experiment brings him almost child-like joy. We pick ourselves up from the rubble and are met by mischievous giggles. There is a whimsiness in him that is usually crushed by a hidden melancholy, but now the mirth is on full display."
