I do think Tyrion gets judged more harshly than other characters because the narrative positions him differently than other characters, as Dinklage has said in interviews, as “the good bad guy, the bad good guy” (and even though I am quoting a show interview, this post is about the books. This was an interview Dinklage gave when the show first aired about the book character he was portraying on screen. Similarly, GRRM has described Tyrion as “the grayest of the gray.”) And Tyrion fans are not wrong for seeing him as different than the other Lannisters BECAUSE the narrative positions him as different, but at the same time the narrative also acknowledges that Tyrion is still a part of his family and still has obligations towards them. So like, when people talk about Tyrion’s run as Hand of the King they either expect him to be the good guy, the noble defector from the bad guy faction with no ties to them whatsoever (forget familial love or duty, right?), or they judge all of his actions harshly because he ISN’T that character.

And one of the things that I most see Tyrion criticized for is his deception in negotiating a trade for Jaime, but I have never seen it acknowledged that Robb was never going to agree to the negotiations anyway, and told Catelyn as much:

“…I might have been able to trade the Kingslayer for father, but…”

“…but not for the girls?” [Catelyn’s] voice was icy quiet. “Girls are not important enough, are they?”

I think fandom tends to see Robb as righteous here because the Starks are considered the good guys, and if the narrative positions Tyrion as the good bad guy, the one who is different from the other Lannisters, then he should agree with Robb, right?

Except that not only do we know Robb will never agree to the terms through Catelyn’s POV, what reason does Tyrion have to trust Robb? Robb who treated him with suspicion at Winterfell before he had even done anything and denied him hospitality and treated him rudely when he offered help to Bran. (Which was also a contributing factor in Tyrion’s arrest, because Tyrion knew something was going on by the way he was treated at Winterfell and was on the defense when he saw Catelyn at the inn, and confronted her about it.) Then Catelyn arrests him on false charges and he’s nearly executed for something he didn’t do. What reason does he have to trust any of these people?

Tyrion’s life experiences are not those that have taught him to believe in the best in people (and even then, he does reach out to the Starks and is met with suspicion, scorn, and false accusations. One of the things that is most interesting about Tyrion is that despite his cynicism and awareness that he will always be hated by other people because of what he is, he keeps trying to connect with others), and even though he knows that his family isn’t trustworthy either and siding with them is just as likely to get him killed, and that supporting Joffrey’s rule is inherently immoral, at least that’s a threat he’s lived with before. The devil you know and all that.

Not that Robb or Catelyn were in the wrong or that blame needs to be deflected on someone else, but it’s a complicated situation and statements about what the morally appropriate choice is tend to overlook situations where every choice has moral fallout. (Criticisms of Tyrion here also don’t acknowledge that other characters have to make moral sacrifices. Robb decides that he can’t trade his sisters for Jaime even though he knows it’s immoral to let his sisters remain hostages.) What’s the most moral choice in a hostage negotiation situation, where neither side is willing to agree and human lives are at risk on both sides? What’s the most moral choice when your best option for survival is to trust in the wrong side, in people who you know are going to hurt you, and have hurt you in the past? What’s the most moral choice when the “good” side also wants to see you and your entire family dead?

The narrative specifically invites us to ask these questions. One of the things I love about asoiaf is that it invites the reader to consider multiple sides of a situation, and that’s a big reason why Tyrion is one of my favorite characters, because his character does exist in that gray area.

The Birthday Paradox

In a room of just 23 people, the odds of 2 people sharing a birthday are 50:50… 

“Okay, so.” Sam puts his hands down flat on the scored wood of his stolen desk. “Friday night after the show we’ll—”

“Oh, we can’t do Friday,” says Debbie.

He scowls up at her. “Why the fuck not?”

“It’s, uh, Ruth’s birthday.”

“Oh.”

Silence reigns for an awkward thirty seconds. Debbie’s immaculate eyebrows arch. “We could do Saturday instead?”

“Right. Sure. Yeah.”

He roots about his papers, discomforted, until she rolls her eyes and asks the obvious question.  

“Are you… okay?”

It’s not the kind of thing they have to ask very often, both of them usually perfectly transparent to the other. Like a pair of housecats. Just about able to tolerate being in the same room, and good at giving the other space when they come in hackles raised. Their claws generally reserved for other people. Which is probably just as well, given the amount of fur that would fly should they ever turn on one another.  

“I’m fine,” he says, too quickly. He makes the mistake of catching her eye and sighs. “It’s her actual birthday on Friday?”

“Don’t you have all of our birthdates written down on those consent forms you made us sign?”

“I’m not Klaus fucking Kinski, alright? I don’t remember that shit.”

“Who?”

“It doesn’t matter. Forget I asked.” He tries to handwave her confusion away, but she’s damned if she’ll be dismissed like that by him.

“Fine. Yes, it’s her actual birthday on Friday. Are you…what? Wanting to buy her a present?” If she sounds incredulous it’s because she is. The idea of Sam giving enough of a shit about anybody else to go and buy a gift is laughably ludicrous.

“No.”

“Well, what then?”

“Jesus Christ. Will you just—? I mean, can you not—?” He stutters to a stop, scowling; realising he’s going to have to spill. “Because it’s my fucking birthday, too. Alright? Are you happy now?”

She blinks. Of course, Sam must have birthdays. He moves through linear time like the rest of them, despite his efforts to remain firmly stuck in his Seventies heyday. It’s just hard to think of him in the same context as cake and candles.

“Oh.”

He is shaking his head. “Don’t, don’t fucking tell—”

“I won’t. Any anyway, nobody’s going to care.” It comes out more harshly than she intends; she can see it stings from the sudden droop of his moustache. “I just mean: we’re all too old to give a shit about birthdays. Apart from Jenny.”

“Right,” he says, flatly. “We done?”  

“I will… make the arrangements for Saturday,”

“Great. You do that.” He’s making a show of taking out his cigarettes rather than look at her.

“Fine,” she says, determined to have the last word.

My friend Chris and I were as close as two guys could be without being brothers, in fact I would often call him my "brother from another mother", we had so many things in common that we easily became best friends.

We shared most classes together in high school so it was very rare to see one of us without the other. One day, towards the end of high school someone finally addressed our close relationship, a woman. She asked if we were together because we (jokingly) argued like a married couple.

This immediately gave me pause, I knew how I felt about homosexuality, my brother being gay taught me to be accepting, but I had no idea where Chris stood, it never came up in the four years we ran around causing chaos in the halls of our school. I knew we were both straight, he had a girlfriend and I was hopelessly pining after one of my girl friends.

I was worried that this would be where we stood apart, he did have some friends who were very generic high school dicks, the guys that are very much, "We are men, hear us roar!". I looked to him dreading a look of disgust on his face but instead saw him looking back at me with his shit eating grin and knew all was well. We answered in the way we usually did, with jokes. I walked over to him and awkwardly put my arm around his shoulder (He was taller) and we began to discuss that no, we were not together in a sexual manner but if we were that the other would definitely be the wife.

I've had plenty of good friends throughout my short life and while it's true that I naturally gravitate towards making girl friends I have had tremendous luck finding amazing guy friends as well and none better than Chris.

“Oof,” Ruth says, taking the weight of the camera on hershoulder. “Heavier than I thought.” She hefts it experimentally.

“Don’t – just – this shit’s expensive, alright? Hold itstill,” he flaps.

“Okay, okay.” She grins, enjoying his panic. “I’ve got it.”

He shakes his head, feigning regret at letting her try herhand at operating. “Jesus Christ. Okay. You need to manage your cable. Don’twant to trip yourself up with it.”

“Have you done that?”

“Not recently,” he says, looping the spare behind her. “Andthe final piece – cans. So, you know, you can ignore me telling you what to do.”

Alright, hear me out here. Peter Pettigrew became a Death Eater behind everyone’s back. He was a spy for a whole year and no one suspected him, his friends still trusted him to the point of choosing him as Secret Keeper. The Potters were murdered, but Voldemort fell and he knew Sirius was aware of his betrayal. He took Voldemort’s wand and hid it, then he couldn’t have had much time to come up with a plan, but he did. When confronted by Sirius the next day, Peter managed to kill 12 people with one single spell, while simultaneously framing Sirius for his crime and faking his own death. Everyone bought the story completely, Sirius went to Azkaban and he managed to stay hidden as a rat for 12 years (3 of which he was very close to Harry Potter the whole time). This was the perfect crime. And then, when the truth finally came out… he managed to escape again. Alone, after 12 years living as a rat, he retrieved Voldemort’s wand, fled the country and somehow tracked down Voldemort who was hidden in a forest in Albania and didn’t even have a body. Before even finding him, he ran into a Ministry witch and figured she’d be useful, so he overpowered her and took her over to his master – and this gift from Wormtail is what made possible Voldemort’s entire plot in the Goblet of Fire. Now, Peter managed to restore him to a baby body. Peter had to be the one to make sure they survived and follow every instruction to their plans: taking the Riddle house, retrieving Crouch Jr, capturing Moody and finally completing the ritual to restore Voldemort’s body.

Now consider all that and imagine thinking of Peter as the dumb, useless marauder. He most definitely was not.

Great establishing chapter, the pieces have been set and the game is about to begin. It's good to see some new content for this story.

I was a little confused at the sudden scene change from her conversation with Joff to her making popcorn at home but nothing a little transition can't fix. Overall, really exciting stuff, great job.

“Family Matters” rewrite sneak peek...

So I’m going to be re-writing Family Matters. A lot of the same concepts are going to remain, I just realized I wanted to be a lot further with the characters than where I am now and I want to change a few things that didn’t make sense or that were pointed out as odd in my adaptation. 

This sneak peek is the beginning of the rewrite and the first chapter..the second chapter will take place 8 months later.
