JIMMY POPS - love hunt EP (1999)
personal rating: ☆8.5/10☆
ok so first thing is that i love this EP. it only has 5 songs but all of them are just so fun and energetic and awesome and they all have their own qualities that make them shine. it starts out with 'we need love' which is super great and also for no reason at all has this crazy sick guitar solo in the middle of it, and same with 'billy hunt'. (i'm a total sucker for a good guitar solo.) the thing about 'billy hunt' is that when i first listened to it i couldn't stand it and then i'm 90% sure that i just relistened to it so much that i unintentionally stockholm-syndromed myself into liking it. the track lineup on this EP is super solid! all of the songs are just full of energy and none of them feel out of place. if you've listened to JIMMY POPS' 'minyalbum' you might recognize 'rock'n'roll' from that tracklist, but the thing about the version in 'love hunt EP' (which is actually the original version) is that it's actually stapled to another song sort of. 'rock'n'roll' finishes and you're thinking 'wow that was a really good listen' and then BAM! there's still more song left! this release is just so full of life, and i love it. i'm also a super super big fan of the vocals in this band. :-] i think that my favorite songs on this EP are probably 'we need love', 'front line', and 'rock'n'roll' (i don't even think i can choose a favorite).
would i recommend it?: HELL YES!

kineorama - it all makes sense, cats live 100 years (2020)
personal rating: ☆9.0/10 ☆
i actually really really loved this compilation album. it’s got a really calm and almost soothing atmosphere to it, with the vocals sounding like you’re being sung a lullaby. however, the album also carries a kind of strange feeling with it, like something is just a little bit wrong. this feeling really adds to the whole album. in songs like ‘aitsu no nogai’, the lyrics are really melancholic, and it feels when you’re waiting for the subway on a winter afternoon and you can see your breath. the whole album has lots of digital instrumentals, which contrasts really nicely with the soft feeling of the piano used in the songs, and with the melodic vocals. it all kind of feels like an empty building with the art still on the walls. it’s cute, it’s a little bit ominous, it’s charming, and most of all it’s just really really nice to listen to. it’s great! some of my favorite songs on this album are ‘pop song’ (probably my favorite song on the album), ‘correct way to fall down a deep hole’, and ‘anime song #5’, but honestly this album has no bad songs on it, and all of them are full of charm. they feel like ceramics and warm lighting. i love this album so much :-]
would i recommend it?: DEFINITELY!!!!!

all girl summer fun band - all girl summer fun band (2002)
personal rating: ☆8.8/10☆
this album is awesome and sweet and fun and a bunch of other adjectives that i can't think of right now and i like it a whole lot! it's got these sort of retro, 1960s-ish sounding instrumentals that pair so well with the different voices of the band members. the lyrics are so sickeningly sweet, and at times during the album they almost seem completely ridiculous and maybe even a bit ironic. however, there's songs like 'somehow angels' that are just so sincere that you can't even doubt them for a second. the whole album is just filled with energy and romance and fun melodies, it's just got a certain charm to it that touches the heart. all of the songs on this album are super awesome in their own ways, but my favorite songs off of this album are 'car trouble', 'it's there', and 'girl #3' (my favorite song from the album). overall, this is definitely an album that's worth checking out!
would i recommend it?: totally!

strawberry story - lucky aubergine (1994)
personal rating: ☆6.7/10☆
there is so much going on in this EP. throughout the four tracks there are so many different sounds and emotions and feelings that are all connected together through a common rough-around-the-edges feeling and sheer willpower. this EP feels like an old gingham picnic blanket with a frayed edge. the songs are actually really good in their respective ways, from the loud and angsty sound of 'well what do you think of that then, paddy?' to the sweet and mellow sound of 'beautiful'. adding onto that, the vocals are versatile enough to fit into all of the different feelings in a way that sounds really nice! my favorite tracks off of this EP are probably 'simple' and 'beautiful', which have drastically different energy levels but still manage to capture the same perfect sweetness. overall just a really lovely listen.
would i recommend it?: yeah! :-]

fukamidori - peanuts on the run (1999)
personal rating: ☆8.7/10☆
this album is super awesome. it sucks that this band only put out two albums (that i know of at least), because this album is full of life and feeling and great music. it's got such cool instrumentals, and it has such a mellow feel to it. the use of acoustic guitar, synths, and bongos(!) all just add an eclectic feeling to the album in the best way possible. another thing that i really really love about this album is the vocals. they're soft and sweet and relaxed and i just feel like they fit in perfectly with the feeling of the tracks. the way that fukamidori combined twee pop and shibuya kei with bossa nova is just so cool and it provides such a unique sound to the whole album. my favorite songs off of this album are 'lemon wo okane ni kaeru hoho', 'sugita hanashi' and 'gakkari sa senaide' (probably my favorite song on the album).
would i recommend it?: definitely!

the pains of being pure at heart - the pains of being pure at heart (2009)
personal rating: ☆9.2/10☆
i love this album. it has such a perfect blend of romance, energy, and noise that is just full of charm. the shoegaze-y guitars add a feeling like a ripped hem that pairs really well with the soft, saccharine vocals. this album feels like butterflies in your stomach. the light and off-the-ground feeling, the romantic lyrics, the mix of emotions, and the occasional bittersweet moment feels like looking in the eyes of someone who you want to hang out with every day. it's sickly sweet and full of lovely melodies that just fit in with the fuzzy instrumental sound. it's full of so much love and angst and feeling. some of my favorite tracks are 'come saturday', 'a teenager in love', and 'everything with you' (which is my favorite track on the album and actually the first song i ever heard from this band). while the sound of this album isn't anything especially new or revolutionary, it's an album that will always have a special place in my heart, and it's definitely worth a listen! :-)
would i recommend it?: hell yeah!
