Layer Cake: Saturday update #2

Well. This has been one of the longest weeks of my life and I have gotten very little done. Lol.

I really don't have much to report on, but I had my senior prom yesterday and what were the odds they would have a rainbow layer cake?

100% it seems! Lol, me and my friend freaked out when we saw it lol.

Well that's all for this week unfortunately. I will be posting more art soon and hope to have a more meaty update next week!

Layer Cake: How's it cooking?

Hi, hello, how's it going, and all that good stuff (ok let's not kid ourselves no one reads these blog posts but me lol)

I've been working on Layer Cake for a good few months now ever since one of the characters violently entered my brain, but i really don' have much to show for it huh? I'm going to try (this is second time trying this, but uhm, shush) to make weekly blog posts about my progress on it to keep me working and not just daydreaming about it.

SO *rubs hands together like a house fly* what have I got done? Well. Not too much. Kidding haha.

On the drawing side of this (because Layer Cake is going to be a comic) I've gotten the main cast mostly planned out, two designs are solid with minor changes planned, and the other three still need blocking in, and the side cast is still locked away in my mind dungeon. I have yet to do any kind of background, monster, or prop work either. But overall things are working out, slowly but still.

On the writing side I've gotten around 33% of what I want done before I start drawing out pages.

Layer Cake is planned to have 6 volumes each with a varying number of chapters. Before I start drawing pages, I want to have the first 10 chapters fully scripted, and things roughly fleshed out all the way to the end so I can lay foreshadowing for bigger things that will happen as the story goes along.

As things stand right now, I plan to start posting pages by the end of August. I will be getting major surgery at the end of May and will have all the time in the world to work on Layer Cake this summer once I'm no longer high on opioids. I'm trying to be realistic with this estimate, I know that I draw *very* slow so this will give me plenty of time to draw and write everything I need to while also working on my other things hehe.

(now that I've gotten down everything that I am requring myself to write... time for my to gush about my ocs and the like, i'll let that stay under the cut though haha)

Ok. Gushing time.

Layer Cake has gone through a lot of major changes since it first came to me in November. So the story is about a small agency of paranormal investigators in a world where the paranormal is real, but mostly kept secret/ subconsciously ignored by the general public. Originally the nature of the paranormal aspects of the world was going to be known from the get-go because I thought that other aspects of the story were more important, and the unraveling of that mystery wasn't going to be as exciting. That obviously isnt the case anymore, as I have been walking around the what the nature of that paranormal shit is haha. I decided that it would be more fun for the characters to figure it out, and the mystery of it all, and one character secretly knowing more than they let on, would be good for the story. It lets the world stay more mysterious for longer, I think that this kinda stuff has to walk the middle of a lot of fine lines bewteen confusion/ complete understanding, nothing going on/ the world falling into a black hole, and the like (which is why season 3 of TMA is my personal favorite hehe)

The characters have also changed a lot, I made one of them later learn they are nonbinary, not telling who though. You'll need to wait and see that. Other than that though everyone has really come a long way from the vague "role fufilling" things they once were. A lot of that is from me mixing a bit of myself into them, and a lot comes from me stealing the identities of friends and family members to throw into the pot (Off the top of my head I can say that I have based the main cast off of: my three oldest friends, both of my ex-boyfriends, my old boss from when i worked at subway, my mom, my sister, my German teacher, three more friends, three more ex-friends, and my chemistry teacher)

I'm not sure if I've ever actually talked about the characters in detail here before, so why not now? They are my favorite part of writing after all!

Kid Pauling is a fresh hire to the agency and fresh graduate of college with a degree in idk. He is really eager to please and excited to learn about this new side of things he used to think only existed in the minds of conspiracy theorists and fantasy novels. He is very much a kid, hence the name, and is supposed to be the guy who asks questions for the reader since he's as new to this world as you are. He takes the lead in most of the early chapters, but I can't quite call him the main character, layer cake has a main cast but no real main character.

Maya Patel is a seasoned veteran in hunting down monsters; she's a very friendly and easy-going woman who is really where she's meant to be in life (maybe not mentally but close enough amirite?). She has worked at the agency for about a decade now and really has seen it all, she's the main person who goes out for field work because she's so good at thinking on her feet and getting shit done. She is the character I partially based on my boss from when I worked at subway, genuinely one of the nicest and funniest people I have ever met <3

Noah Simcah is a prickly little man who is very much not as outgoing as his coworkers. He still loves them though don't worry. He's the office's paperwork guy, working away on documenting everything they bring in and the like, he's worked there as long as Maya but is about a decade younger than her. Making her 40ish and him 30ish. He's very much a loveable asshole, and not so standoffish once you get to know him (he is also my favorite if you couldn't tell from the pejoratives) Dr. Elaine Chlebek is a knock off Gertrude Robinson. Kidding, Doc here is a no-nonsense type of lady, she's old and kind but certainly not "grandmother" type of character. She's the boss and founder of the agency, coming over from Europe at some point in the 1980s to do so (for reasons I'll get to eventually). She is very dear to my heart, and the character I have the most difficulty writing. She still needs fleshed out more, but I know where I am going with Elaine.

Scott. So, Scott is an oddball, they don't work for the agency, it's unclear what they are really, but nonetheless they are here. Scott is energetic, annoying, one-track minded, and deeply strange. They are the first thing in layer cake that came to me, I wanted to make a character that embodied the cycles of emotions I go through when I have an anxiety attack, from paranoia, to mania, to a troubling numbness, that is Scott. Since then, they have come to spawn the world of Layer Cake and gotten themselves a stupid boyfriend and consumed my every waking thought. I hate them.

There are another eight important characters, but none of them are a part of the main cast, and I think I would like to get back to working on layer cake rather than just talking about it. So I'll leave this here. See you next Saturday.
