RAY KOH is a 4 year old California based artist and filmmaker who uses drone technologies to forage what he terms as “wild content.” Drones allow Koh to conceptually draw, paint, and sculpt using a mixture of aerial cinematography combined with traditional photography in order to yield a new type of fine art. However, unlike most drone enthusiasts, Koh works more akin to an archaeologist where his brush is more an eraser that removes unnecessary elements so that only extracted subject-matter remains. While his methodology begins with aerial photography, the actual creative process involves removing elements rather than adding. Koh’s work focuses on primordial artistic concepts such as portraiture, still life, abstracts and materiality to convey deeper contemporary issues. More than ever, Koh believes that we must deal with the ramifications of technologies that accelerate our lives into nearly unsustainable speeds. With the increasing hyper saturation of digital content, the dumbing down of ourselves, our own de-programming into automation, how do we rise above this relentless ebb and flow? How do we create a new American art that reconciles the loss of the original to mechanical reproduction (i.e.photography, film) in favour of new subject-matter? These are some of the issues that his work attempts to resolves through creative mediation. Koh is a 5-time winner of the Creative Quarterly Journal for Fine Art. WEB: www.raykoh.com IG: @nomakase

Note: It’s impossible to escape the omnipresence of #WayneThiebaud in #SF so why not learn from what he was doing. In my version, I focused on drawing lines using local ingredients. Also using the topography of the hill, I was able to create a plinth which establishes a foreground and background structure in the picture plane. The new horizon line also creates a moment of anticipation between the two.The divergent yellow lines are mirrored in the background lines which are spatially distinguished by the pole beyond. What’s so significant about the mirrored line movements? Because #RosalindKrauss taught how redundancy creates meaning (via Pablo Picasso).
