This is old as hell by this point, but since I don't think I ever posted it I'll share it now. This is "Seraph", a short comic I made last year for @readerbewaremag's 2024 edition! They're an online zine focused on pulp horror made by indie writers and artists, and I was honestly so honored that I got to have my work featured in one of their zines! Their final zine is open for submissions, check out their blog to find the application form!

Will the zine return for 2025? 馃憖
YES! For one last time!
Submissions open tomorrow, and for the first time we're doing a themed issue focused on ENDINGS. Stories, poems and comics don't necessarily need to be on theme, but we'll prioritize the ones that are!
Click the image or this link to get a look at our submissions page <3 good luck everyone!

My new story "From the Journals of Dr. Arthur Sweetly" is now available to read in issue 4 of Reader Beware for pay-what-you-want on itch.io. In this epistolary story, a Victorian surgeon with an interest in Spiritualism documents his experiments in which he seeks to prove the rumored distance communication method of sympathetic writing. Content warnings apply for mild gore and death.
Something especially exciting about this issue is that my wife Corinne @synonymsfordismember has a story in here as well! Her story "Born Sexy Tomorrow" is a stomach-turning work of art, and I'm so delighted to see it in print alongside my own work. Content warnings apply for heavy gore and cannibalism.
I hope you'll consider picking up a copy of the magazine to check out mine and Corinne's stories, along with all the other awesome pieces included in this issue. Thank you very much to the editors of @readerbewaremag for including my work in their wonderful publication.

I鈥檓 a little confused and just want to make sure that when you say submissions close at 12am on the 15th you mean the beginning of the 15th and not the end of it.
I don鈥檛 want to accidentally miss submitting!
No worries! Our deadline is midnight tomorrow. You have a little over 24 hours :)

Hi! I'm curious if this zine is online only or do you also print it?
Hi, and thanks for reaching out!
We are online-only. We hope to eventually put out print editions for both future and past issues, but for now anyone looking to acquire the zine can get copies for pay-what-you-want on our itch.io OR for free on our website.
We've gotten a few questions about physical editions, so... if we see continued interest, we might pursue physical editions sooner rather than later.
#for now the best way to support us is through downloading the magazine and sharing it with friends!#and if we see a ton of downloads that will also push us toward releasing a physical edition!#ask#reader beware magazine

thanks to this person for their consideration and encouragement! + in the interest of transparency: across the board, not just for comics but short stories and poems as well, the maximum we can pay anyone is $50. This is part of the reason why we encourage reprint submissions, especially for comics!
The reason our pay is like this is because the funding for Reader Beware comes out of the editors' savings. Last year, the first year we paid our artists, costs amounted to a little over $300. And with the pay-what-you-want model, we made back... like $20?
We are eating the costs because we are a new magazine, and because this is a passion project we do for fun. In the future, we may get to doing things like crowdfunding which will help us raise rates, but for now this is our budget.
Thank you to everyone for your submissions thus far, and we're excited to hear more from you all!

Reader Beware Magazine Subs Opening Soon!
My horror magazine, READER BEWARE, is going to have an Issue 4 out this fall, and we're gonna need some poems, comics and stories to fill it! Here's the update on the submission call:
Submissions will be open May 1-15, though they may be extended if we feel we haven't filled out the magazine yet. Pay has stayed the same for short stories at $.01/word, BUT we do have some changes to our other rates for the better!
POETRY: Poets will now be paid a flat rate of $20 on top of the $.05/line. We realized while paying our poets for last issue if we just stuck to the $.05/line rule, we'd end up paying most of our lovely artists less than a dollar, and we wanted to fix that.
COMICS: We've shortened our max length for comics to 5 pages so that we can give artists $10/page. This is far behind professional standards, but it's the best we can do at the moment with our limited budget. We are also taking submissions for comics as scripts with art samples/sketches this year! You will then finish your comic during magazine production. This is to bring our comic publishing more in line with what we've seen comic-focused publishers do, and to limit the amount of work you'd do for us on spec.
Our site has been updated to reflect these changes, and with more submission guidelines based on our reading experiences last year.
If you're interested, keep an eye on our website, check out our twitter/tumblr @readerbewaremag
