when you think about it the whole mutant/inhuman deal is kinda wild. what i would not give to be a geneticist in the marvel universe. like. all of these powers are coming from changes in dna. ignoring the fact that, uh, that Doesn't Make Sense (i dont. think you can get magneto or storm's powers from changing the "what proteins to make" instructions but) like,,,,, in the marvel universe there are specific parts of dna that can make an individual capable of controlling the weather.
that's FUCKING NUTS! theoretically like, you could sequence a mutant's DNA and figure out which sequence is doing that and then theoretically... put that DNA segment into other organisims. you know how they make glowing fish? they use a dna sequence that controls the manufacturing of a specific kind of protein (green flourescent protein, or GFP) and just. put it in the fish. GFP is one of the most used most standard components in synbio but thats NOT WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT
what would happen if you put magneto's Make Metal Do Shit genes into an e.coli. biological magnets? storm's make-lightning gene? like, the possibilities are ENDLESS! splice super-healing into plants and now your crops will never die. like WHAT. you could do so much wild shit with this.

100 Days: Day 34-36
(set up by @the-wip-project but I've pretty much stopped using the prompts)
It's been an interesting few days. I've continued with my outlining post (unfinished) first draft. I am very excited about the new outline I have. I spent a few days frustrated that I felt like I hadn't made much progress, I feel no closer to a finished manuscript than I was a month ago even though I know I am. I am trying to focus on remembering that I needed to tell myself the story before I could tell others. I am also trying to remember that often I most enjoy books for the emotional impact they have on me not the skill of the writing. (Maggie Stiefvater is the exception, but if I can write even one line or emotional beat that hits me the same way that reading hers do I will be happy).
I think I will take a few more days to keep reoutlining and building up the layers of subplots and character arcs. I'm trying to do a bit more world building and create a scene by scene outline for act 1 so I know what information I am trying to convey and have time to figure out how I can do it subtly. I then plan to reread my first draft to figure out what I cared about and what moments hit and what didn't, and build that into my new outline too.

100 Days: Day 29 - Day 33
I've been camping so gotten no writing done over the past few days, but good news is I am feeling super inspired and did a lot of brainstorming.
Today I have been replotting my wip despite not really finishing the first draft. I love this new outline though. I think it has a much clearer direction / tension so I think I'm going to do a real bare bones version of the last 10 chapters in the next two weeks just so I have something to work from. I then plan to give it time to rest, then revisit both my 150k long first draft and my new outline to see what I want to change before I start my second draft.
I'd love to bounce my new outline off someone so if you're keen to hear it shoot me a message.

D U O D E C I M A L ↳ a novella by max goose-books
(image credit to tamanna rumee on unsplash)
Sixteen-year-old Marshall Gardner is 1) straight-laced, 2) exacting, 3) judgemental, and 4) perfectionistic. And below the surface, kept hidden from the rest of the world, he’s 5) controlled by his obsessions and compulsions, 6) fixated on the number twelve, 7) hopelessly in love with his best (only) friend, and 8) horrendously imperfect.
He’s also 9) universally disliked, 10) the self-made enemy of the former GSA president, 11) just a little too easy to trick, and 12) in trouble.
a story in twelve parts, ft. color symbolism, neurodivergent feelings, trans people, the “locked in a room with the person you hate” trope except it’s not enemies-to-lovers they just hate each other, & at least one ray bradbury reference.
AKA “the short story that got away from me and became 23k words,” AKA boy howdy have YOU ever wanted a twelfth night retelling that fully ignores the gayass love triangle that is the main appeal of twelfth night and focuses instead on the irrelevant background characters and their silly little subplot??? have i got the novella for you!
duodecimal is entirely free & being released in full! all 23k words of it. links & content warnings under the cut.

100 days: day 26 - day 28
Progress
I haven't written anything... and I'm going away then doing a summer subject so I may not have much time to write for the next few weeks. I am determined to finish my first draft by the end of July though so I just have to jump back in, which is tough now I have kind of gotten out of the habit of writing.
I have been beta reading for a friend these past few days though which was awesome! their project is very different from mine (60k YA contemporary / coming of age as opposed to 120k+ YA dark fantasy) but it was great fun.
prompt from @the-wip-project was about phrases we use to often in our writing, here are some of mine
the fact that ...
which means either x or y
her breathing slowed / caught / she took a breath
x was what mattered
I'm sure there are many more that I'll catch during editing

100 days: day 17-25
I've been away visiting family so haven't done any writing. It was very last minute but had been a long time coming. I feel ready to get back into writing. I feel like I've drafted this post 3 times, so it's just going to be short. Here are some prompts from @the-wip-project
how do you decide which wip to work on
whichever I have the most outlined for
whichever I am furthest along in
whichever my emotions are strongest for at the time
moodboard
I used pinterest a lot to capture the tone of characters and projects so here's a screenshot of one of my boards, which is obviously much longer than this. This is for one of my other projects, not the one I'm currently working on, but it's probably my favorite pinterest board.

100 Days: Day 15
Today's Progress
wrote 2152 words
finished a very short chapter 14
Today's Prompt from (@the-wip-project) is asking about fairytales within our project
This is an interesting question and one that I hadn't really considered. I imagine there'd be some interesting in word lore about the dragons and their origins. That's something I'll have to think some more about!

100 Days: Day 14
Today's Progress
I only wrote 418 words, and the reason I stopped was because there were other things I needed to do in the day and not because I wanted to stop writing
Finished Gloria's chapter 13
Today's Prompt (from @the-wip-project) is about creatures of folklore in your WIP
Dragons are an integral part of my plot, with both my POV characters having a dragon friend. I had a lot of fun figuring out different species of dragon to fill different ecological niches and with different adaptions that I thought would be cool so that they're not all the classic firebreathing dragon.

100 Days: Day 13
Today's Progress
I wrote 3011 words and felt like I could keep going but my housemates wanted to watch a movie
My chapters keep ending up longer than I expect (woops)
Having so much fun though
Today's Prompt (from @the-wip-project) is about character "types" that we tend to write.
There are definitely trends in the characters I write. Often my characters are women who are anxious yet ambitious and a little bit self destructive. But I work hard to give them different motivations and ways of reacting to stuff so they're not all the same.

100 Days: Day 12
Today's Progress
wrote 2807 words even though the beginning was kind of torture
finished Gloria's chapter 11 with a cute kiss
wrote the first bit of the next chapter so I didn't start with a blank page, stuff is going to pop off there
I'm thinking I can finish this draft by the end of June which would be amazing, then I can put myself on a tight revision schedule and have the second draft done before nanowrimo (big dreams that probably won't quite come to pass)
Today's Prompt (from @the-wip-project) wasn't one I resonated with so I'll see you tomorrow

100 Days: Day 11
Today's Progress
Writing was painful today for about the first 1700 words, but I made it to 2759
I wrote 2 different scenes that were mostly relationship dynamic focused but with some world building stuff so there was lots of writing myself in circles trying to figure out what was most plot relevant, one of them still has another 1000 words or so left but that's tomorrow's job
I think I'm back into the story after not writing much for 5 days and getting out of the swing of things
Today's prompt (by @the-wip-project) is about how we create characters, which is especially timely as I've been working on my characters for my new project
Often characters are one of the first things I get an idea of, I'll have some concept of their growth arc or relationships to other characters. Often I try to figure out motivations because that really drives the plot for me. I tend to play around with a bunch of options, trying on different goals to see what feels right. A big thing is figuring out the character's hook, what makes them compelling to me as a character. Because if I'm not facinated by this character then I don't think readers will be deeply invested either. For this I look at character archetypes I enjoy reading, or I do "what if" questions to try to find details I could add that make me more excited about them. It's little twists in their background or situation that add tension inherently, additional secrets they're keeping or challenges they're going to run into.
I used to fill in long character profiles, but they didn't end up being that helpful for me getting to know the character deeper than surface level. I also used hogwarts houses or star signs or MBTI types when I was first writing as a way to distinguish characters. My current system works on figuring out their background, goals (now using the GMC system) physical appearance, basic personality, some songs I feel relate to them, and a rating on a chart I made for how observant they are about their environment and how they react to conflict. That's generally enough for me, and then I figure the rest out as I write.
