there's something so outrageously poetic about the crows saying “no mourners, no funerals.” instead of “good luck.” when actually the statement could not be any further from the truth.

because yes, maybe they are a gang of wayward nobodies. maybe they would not be grieved by way of gold caskets or weeping crowds. but god how they would grieve eachother.

they've fought side by side, bled together, laughed together, schemed and thieved together. they would mourn eachother like a family mourns each other.

they think they're bound together by their insignificance, by their wrecked backgrounds and losses, by the fact they would have no mourners, and no funerals. but they’re bound together by the fact that no matter the job, the fight, the reward, if one were to fall the others would mourn them. because they ARE a family. they are eachother's mourners.

The phone hung up before he could finish. Jesper muttered a curse under his breath and set his phone down, running a hand over his mouth. Was this even the right choice? Jesper should feel joy. Kaz wanted them to get closer to Wylan? This was as close as they were going to get. Even then, his emotions felt scattered. The resentment for Wylan still lingered, and he wasn’t sure if it would ever go away.

3. Band

The crowd roars and sings along as they reach the chorus of one of their biggest hits. Jesper grins, feeling the energy of the crowd thrumming through his veins, setting him alight.

Next to him, Kaz and Inej are singing directly to each other, eyes locked over their respective microphone stands. On their other side, Nina blows a kiss over her shoulder to Matthias on the drums, winking at the crowd as they scream even louder.

Wylan’s crystal clear harmony joins Kaz and Inej’s, and Jesper lets his gaze slide over to him where he sits behind the keyboard.

His cheeks are flushed from the heat of the stage lights, hair curling wildly in the humidity of the gig venue. He’s beautiful, ethereal, the perfect man, and Jesper has been head over heels for him since the moment they met.

But Wylan is not only his bandmate, but also his best friend, and Jesper values his steady, calming friendship far too much to risk it.

Saints, does he want him, though.

Not that being bandmates stopped Nina and Matthias from getting together. One minute they’d been constantly at each other’s throats, and the next thing any of them knew, they were announcing their relationship.

And then there’s whatever is going on with Kaz and Inej: lingering, loaded glances, a brush of pinky fingers, and longing stares when they both think the other isn’t looking. For the two of them, it basically qualifies as public indecency.

Wylan looks up then and meets Jesper’s gaze. It’s sheer muscle memory that keeps Jesper’s fingers moving, his heart stuttering wildly at the surprising heat in Wylan’s eyes.

What if Wylan feels it too? This spark between them, the seemingly inexorable force that always pulls Jesper toward him, like a moth to a flame.

What if he does?

The thought circles round and round in his head until the end of the song, where they depart the stage for a few minutes to drink some water and catch their breath, leaving Matthias to his drum solo.

Jesper switches out his guitar and picks and gulps down a bottle of blissfully cool water.

What if?

At the sound of soft footsteps, he looks up.

“Hey,” Wylan says. He licks his lips nervously.

“Hey yourself.”

On the stage, Matthias’ solo is nearing its end. Nina will be lingering in the wings, getting ready to join him in vamping the crowd for a few more moments.

Wylan steps closer. “Jes, I… oh, hell,” he mutters, and then he’s standing on his tiptoes and pressing their mouths together.

In a heartbeat, the rest of the world drops away. There’s no more drum and bass, no more excited cheers and shouts from the crowd, just the softness of Wylan’s lips, the dip of his waist as Jesper draws him closer and settles a hand there.

Wylan’s lips part, and Jesper takes full advantage to deepen the kiss. He tastes of toothpaste, of golden hour sunsets, of slow mornings and late nights in dive bars, giggling over shit beer and greasy fries.

When they pull apart, Wylan blinks up at him, eyes gone hazy.

“I’m completely in love with you,” Jesper tells him, and those deep brown eyes widen almost imperceptibly, before softening.

“Good,” says Wylan. “Because I’m completely in love with you too.”

I like how the soc books mention multiple times that van eck is actually quite handsome except for his receding hairline and they also make it very clear that wylan takes after his dad in basically every way EXCEPT for his hair which he gets from his mom lol he really got the best of both worlds

Come to think of it, maybe the reason why Wylan wanted Jesper to learn how to use his powers so badly was because he never wanted anyone to be in the same situation. His entire life, Wylan most likely had been taught to make himself small, ask for less, don't make a big show out of things by Van Eck simply because he couldn't read. He was taught to conceal himself. Jesper concealed his powers unless necessary, even though being Grisha is a part of him, this time partly voluntarily.
