NEXT TO NORMAL PROSHOT if you dont want to get a vpn with american servers or dont want to wait until cinema release or are worried pbs will take the it down once there is a cinema release heres the whole thing!!! i screen recording the whole thing in chunks and edited them together as seemlessly as possible so there shouldnt be any noticable interruptions. if i try to post this one more time on youtube they will hunt me down so spreading the file itself will have to suffice

one of the first spoken lines in next to normal being “you gotta let go mom, I’m almost 18” makes me put my head in my hands everyyy time. like that really is the show summed up isn’t it! but we as an audience don’t know yet that Gabe isn’t actually real. might be sick about it all

something i noticed on my thousandth rewatch of the next to normal pro shot that made me absolutely feral

also fair warning that this might be spoilery

right after just another day as diana is on the floor making sandwiches cause ya know

dan is there standing between their kids and their mom and natalie goes “dad?” and then jack wolfe goes “mom?”

dan turns and seems to make eye contact with his son and he fucking gasps/flinches and turns sharply away. he even shakes his head no once. there’s a beat of him hands on his knees *hurting*

and then you can see that dan literally has to take a second before putting on his facade of everything’s fine the *forced calm* before gesturing with both hands and saying “go.” but who goes? it’s his son who listens! he leaves first ! it’s his daughter who lingers.

and this reaction is so early in the show! but it’s not so incredibly subtle that if you look for it you can see it !

i just think it’s so neat and contextualizes the complexity of the reveal later. dan has always been able to see gabe. he just refuses to acknowledge him. it’s natalie who never does and maybe only gets a glimpse at the end when gabe says goodbye

really in love with the idea that dan is reacting to gabe’s presence/force and hiding it all to keep up “a perfect loving normal family”

anywho this might already be well known and examined but i just noticed it today and found it so neat

i’m so grateful for the proshot because the ending scene is going to stick with me forever. not just the way grief is showcased between and for dan and gabe, but just that one moment, for one moment we can see gabe and natalie as the siblings the should have been. for one tiny second we get to see how badly gabe wanted to be a brother, to be there for natalie as she cried. and for a moment, dan could see it too. the way gabe breaks down as natalie says “it’s just me and you” is so heartbreaking. she can’t see him because he never got to meet her, never got to be the brother he should have been and wanted to be.

Something that I don’t think is talked about enough is the differences in how Broadway vs West End productions of N2N stage the song ���I am”

!!!For starters this is not claiming one cast is better than the other!!! I love both casts equally this is purely analysis

In the Broadway version when Gabe says “look at me” he is looking and directing this towards Diana

Meanwhile in the West End, Gabe is talking to Dan.

Then when Gabe is echoing Dan by repeating “I am” Aaron’s Gabe is once again speaking to Diana, trying to convince her that he is all of the things Dan claims to be, and is speaking very softly.

He only looks at Dan when he says the line “you don’t give a damn” and then separates himself from Diana to challenge Dan directly

Jack’s Gabe is speaking to and in contradiction to Dan(is that the right word?) telling Dan no YOU are not I AM. He doesn’t move to comfort Diana until “I won’t walk away”
