And then they also outright ignore lyrium, it's connection to magic, and the fact that it's blood, too, in favor of tying up the Titain storyline. Except the "resolution" isn't satisfying at all and is confusing at absolute best.
Blood magic in da makes me kinda mad because it's such a cool concept, but Bioware doesn't do shit with it. It's THE way to be more or less self-sufficient as a mage (no need for lyrium!) but you're quite literally using yourself up for power, body and spirit. Like imo there should absolutely be long-term consequences for gratuitous use of blood magic, you're siphoning that magic from your own life force, like some fucked up self-sustaining, self-digesting circle. Forget about demons, that can not be healthy just by itself. And like, that's metal as fuck!! But then all they do in the actual games is sometimes point at it like. oh that's the evil demon-y magic btw, with no further exploration. Don't piss me OFF
#just throwing away their world building with both hands#its like theyre afraid of their own writing#and then to not really acknowledge it in veilguard#except for the fact that most of the Entire mourn watch are BLOOD MAGES#EVEN ROOK#AND THEN THE WRITING DOESNT ENGAGE WITH IT AT ALL#bioware critical#dragon age

I've been absolutely loving the couple AUs I've read where Kaidan is the Psychotic Biotic instead of Jack, but an AU idea just occurred to me that I can't find anywhere: Kaidan as a Justicar.
I just have this vision of Kaidan after BAaT, mired in the guilt of having killed Vyrnnus, getting lost in the self-loathing of thinking that his biotics make him nothing but a freak and a monster. Because that's the only experience he's had, right? So to counter this, he somehow (maybe his parents buy it to cheer him up, maybe he seeks it out) gets his hands on the galaxy's preeminent example that biotics can be more than monsters: an issue of Justicar Heroes!
The idea of an order of biotics who all are heroes because of their strict code of ethics would absolutely appeal to the young Kaidan Alenko. It's the same way that the Alliance eventually drew him in, but even more personal in some ways.
And of course, any good comic series has a "letters from the fans" section at the end. I can so easily imagine Kaidan, still feeling guilt-ridden, sending in a letter asking how a Justicar would judge his killing of Vyrnnus. And when a Justicar (for the sake of plot, obviously it’s Samara) sends him back a personal message informing him that he acted as a Justicar would, Kaidan is gone. The role that the Alliance would have played in his life is replaced by the Justicars.
Obviously there’s a lot of talking and development that Kaidan has to do before he actually reaches that point. He’s got to figure out whether he’s really sure. He’s got to explain it to his parents. But he gets there in the end.
And there’s some interesting political stuff to work out— there’s never been a non-Asari Justicar before! But a careful reading of their code is clear that being an Asari is not necessarily a requirement, and it’s such a sacred part of their culture that they’d never imagined a way to refuse people who actually want the role. The Alliance is naturally also concerned about losing one of their relatively few biotics, but it’s a good enough PR move that they end up not minding.
So after a couple decades of super-intense training, we have the First Human Justicar. And who knows, maybe on his adventures he’ll meet the First Human Spectre.

The very end of Veilguard felt like terminal lucidity. It's the only part of the game that actually felt like Dragon Age, if you ignore all the shit that led up to it.
#veilguard critical#bioware critical#dragon age#veilguard#i hope we'll see dragon age again#but i don't know how you fix that

Raise your hand if you’re a character who’s labeled as boring and uninteresting by the fandom and the insufferable fangirls of another character in your game when you’re not at all boring, people just don’t take the time to get to know you and your personality just because you’re not a snotty rude white vampire or a 6’7 alien who’s always committing police brutality and because the writers and developers fucked up your writing but instead of holding them accountable the fans take it out on you and constantly treat you like the villain for having valid feelings about certain situations like your romantic partner joining a terrorist organization or you being upset that your body was horrifically changed against your will and despite that you continue to be selfless and kind and loving and- Oh hey Kaidan and Wyll, what are you doing here ?
Edit: Also raise your hand if your queerness is constantly being erased or questioned or debated when you’re a canon queer character and- Oh Kaidan and Wyll, you’re still here !

#not the police brutality bird#and the corrupt judge#mass effect#kaidan alenko#bg3#bg3 wyll#always the same shit#inevitably some kind of weird bigotry#when the only criticism you can level against a character is that they're boring#then you look at the characters they do find interesting#:/ yeah
