I think the strongest proof I've ever seen that Discord replacing forums is insane and bad for online communities was when I was trying to get into speedrunning a game and I joined the discord...but it didn't have any channels with guides for the categories so I relied on the guides posted on the speedrun.com page to learn, and that was more or less fine until one day I off-hand mentioned a part of the route that I found hard...and one of the most popular runners in the whole server responded and treated me like an idiot for doing it that way when the actual route was different, and kinda just dropped off when I said that I was following the fucking guide posted to the speedrun.com for this game by people in this specific community to help new runners learn the categories, and if those guides are wrong they should maybe like. Update them?

I stopped speedrunning the game after that. Didn't seem like much point if no one was going to update the guides. I didn't want to end up being annoying and bothering people on the discord with every little question either, but the guides were all outdated and the Discord didn't have any posted, you just had to bother people to learn, and since the Discord existed I guess they didn't see a point in updating the guides even tho again those were the only ones that existed. Basically just sets you up to look like an idiot and then annoy everyone.

So yeah. Discord replacing forums is awful and it should stop.

weird as fuck living in a culture where it's considered more impolite to speak up and defend yourself against someone treating you unfairly than it is for someone to be rude to you in the first place

Thinking about how some people in my life who I felt like they were deliberately trying to say anything "woke" in front of me to gauge my ideological radar fills me with dread. I wish it wasn't this way, I wish they could say how they feel without repercussions. It makes me think they've heard/read some people answer with the most outrageous slop they every heard about a certain issue, and they realized they couldn't just share their radical views on them.

This has happened with people who've helped me get the voice I want and the jobs I want. I wish them the best of luck in life.

I really hope future generations education doesn't shatter in the upcoming Trump years.
