You know how there’s a debate where or not to wet your toothbrush before or after putting toothpaste on? Well I just watched my father wet his toothbrush and then brush his teeth for five seconds with it BEFORE putting toothpaste on, and when I asked him what he was doing he said he was “getting everything wet in there” like dude what?? Like are your teeth not already wet from just being in your mouth?? Absolutely insane

Anyways here’s a poll:

Sometimes I remember that in high school I did a book project in English class where I rewrote the maze runner books as if Thomas was writing in a journal each day and I totally made it so he was having gay thoughts about Newt and even wrote a part where he realized he was in love with him and then I submitted that to my very religious teacher with absolutely no shame.

I've rarely seen a more validating sentence in my entire life.

I created a helnik playlist on spotify and so I wanted to share what lyrics of the songs I felt fit the ship the most!

1. Foreigner's God by Hozier - this entire song embodies Helnik. It's about exploring a new culture and new feelings through the love of a woman. The lyrics "She moved with shameless wonder. The perfect creature rarely seen" convey Matthias' admiration for Nina. "Still, my heart is heavy. With the hate of some other man's belief" is literally Matthias' previous hatred of Grisha and belief that they are unnatural and evil. "She feels no safety in my arms" is Nina's distrust of him because he is a drüskelle. "All that I've been taught and every word I've got is foreign to me" is Matthias being unfamiliar with both Grisha and Ravkan culture. Yet, the chorus repeats the line "Screamin' the name of a foreigner's God" because the speaker still worships their lover despite all of the unfamiliarity which is Helnik to the max.

2. Take Me To Church by Hozier - literally this entire song. This song carries the premise of Matthias going against his beliefs for Nina SO WELL, especially the first verse. The line "Oh, good God, let me give you my life" is basically Matthias reciting the oath of the drüskelle to Nina.

3. Northern Attitude by Noah Kahan - like just read the chorus:

If I get too close

And I'm not how you hoped

Forgive my northern attitude

Oh, I was raised out in the cold

If the sun don't rise

'Til the summertime

Forgive my northern attitude

Oh, I was raised on little light

The "northern attitude" is literally the drüskelle's hatred towards Grisha, which Matthias is asking Nina to forgive so they can be together. He is asking her to look past the beliefs that he was raised on and show her that he is rejecting those ideals.

4. Fable by Gigi Perez - “I feel when I question, my skin starts to burn” is Matthias questioning his lifelong beliefs. “Love was the law and religion was taught” is him feeling shame for loving a Grisha when his religion forbids it.

5. Two Birds by Regina Spektor - I feel like this song reflects this quote: “They were twin souls, soldiers destined to fight for different sides, to find each other and lose each other too quickly” literally so well as the lyric states “two birds of feather” but one has to fly away and leave the other.

6. cowboy like me by Taylor Swift - this song also reflects the quote from 5 so well because Nina and Matthias are the same: children being forced to fight in a war for their country. Both of them “hustling for the good life.” And the lyric “And the skeletons in both our closets plotted hard to fuck this up” where Matthias’ skeletons are his old life as a drüskelle and Jarl Brum and Nina’s skeletons are her accusation of him as a slaver and everything that Grisha/Ravka has done to Matthias. Now while I interpret the end of this song to have a happy ending where the lovers end up together, it can also be interpreted as the relationship ending with the lyric “and I’m never gonna love again” (even though Nina does learn to love again with Hanne, I can see her thinking this after Matthias’ death).

7. Movement by Hozier - this song is all about how any move that their lover makes moves them and has an impact on them, which I feel represents Helnik because Matthias worships even the slightest moves that Nina makes throughout the books from her facial expressions to her slouching.

8. False God by Taylor Swift - this song has such an upbeat vibe but the first line just HURTS. “We were crazy to think, crazy to think that this could work remember how I said I’d die for you?” This is literally Matthias saying how they were crazy to think that they would both make it out alive from the heists and schemes and is remembering the oath he made to Nina that he would protect her until his death. AHHHHHH. “We were stupid to jump in the ocean separating us” where that ocean is the rift between Grisha and drüskelle. The chorus saying “religion’s in your lips even if it’s a false god” and “the altar is my hips” is Matthias going against his faith for his love of Nina.

9. Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene by Hozier - “with her sweetened breath and her tongue so mean” IS SO NINA LIKE SHE IS SWEET AS HONEY BUT ALSO CAN BE SO BOLD AND STRIKING!! “Jarring of judgement and reasons defeat the sweet heat of her breath in my mouth, I’m alive” is Matthias going against everything he believes and all reasons that point against being with Nina AND BEING INTOXICATED BY HER ANYWAYS.

10. Red by Taylor Swift - “Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly” is literally them. They had such a short, but incredibly powerful and religion-defying love that ended too soon. And then the whole chorus is:

Losing him was blue like I’d never known

Missing him was dark gray all alone

Forgetting him was like tryna know somebody you never met

But loving him was red

Which is absolutely Nina’s feelings after his death.

11. Found Heaven by Conan Gray - this song is all about how someone’s god is disapproving of a relationship and how you can’t let that stop you from chasing that love. “Don’t be scared, little child, of that feeling. You’re in love. You found heaven” which is absolutely what Matthias needed to hear when he was doubting his love for Nina because of his faith.

12. Work Song by Hozier - this whole song but especially the lyrics about their lover being sweet and “if the lord don’t forgive me, I’d still have my baby and my babe would have me” is Matthias and Nina still having each other even if Djel didn’t approve of it

13. The Great War by Taylor Swift - I feel like this song embodies Helnik in the first book. “My hand was the one you reached for all throughout the Great War” is Nina and Matthias always having an underlying want for each other beneath all their arguments. “Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I’d been betrayed” is Nina getting locked in the cell by Jarl Brum and Matthias. The moment that Matthias frees Nina from the cell at the end of the first book and she states that they were “done with fear” is the moment that they survive the Great War.

14. Astronomy by Conan Gray - “Cause socially speaking, we were the same” is so them because THEYRE THE SAME like I said in 5 and 6. “It’s astronomy, we’re two worlds apart” because they’re both from different countries and cultures. “The only mistake we didn’t make was run” because if they had just ran away together, they would have been living happy together in Novyi Zem. “Stop trying to keep us alive. You’re pointing at stars in the sky that already died. Stop trying to keep us alive. You can’t force the stars to align when they’ve already died” is Matthias when he is dying and Nina is trying to bring him back to life.

15. Love of my life by Harry Styles - this is just sadness all around. I don’t have a specific lyric but just the whole song.

16. right where you left me by Taylor Swift - this is Nina not being able to move on from Matthias’ death.
