The Way We Win
Red vs. Blue. Carolina/Kimball. 57,000 words. Rated E. Part 4 of the Inroads series.
Agent Carolina’s adventures in self-sabotage, and a relationship that might even work out despite her best efforts.
Or, how they got to that shoulder-touch, and what happened after.
*
Kimball spots that aqua armor motionless in the snow, and her heart does not stop, not quite.
After the disaster at Crash Site Alpha, it almost feels like it should.
*
Grif brings the bird down between the trees as best he can, as best anyone could, really—there’s no clearing in the dense pines and they can hear branches snapping against the hull on the final descent. Steam billows up before the windshield, obscures the tiny window in the back hatch, where the heat of the Pelican’s engines meets the snow.
There is still something about a winter-white landscape that puts Kimball on high alert. Snow means north, means high altitudes, means Federal strongholds in the mountains, Fed soldiers in their white armor, the bright glare of danger every rebel in desert drab well knows.
Even now, with the truce, it gets her blood up. And the mountains are no less perilous now—just with a different foe.

Everybody’s Changing
Red vs. Blue. Jensen/Volleyball. 2700 words. Rated T. Written for @rvbrarepairweek.
Even after the war, Chorus is always in flux. It’s a changing world out there. Sometimes you need a constant.
Set post-season 17. Same continuity as “Hopes & Fears,” and kind of a happy sequel to “Over,” though you don’t need to read those first.
It’s chilly this morning, and Katie Jensen rolls out of bed and pulls on her old gray hoodie before even putting her glasses on.
It’s silly to keep wearing it, maybe, when it’s so worn out, and she really needs to figure out a way to patch the elbows, one of which has worn clean through. She could get a new sweatshirt. An offworld import would cost an arm and a leg, but they do have textile production on Chorus again.
But it wouldn’t be this hoodie. Faded and pilled, with ragged cuffs and split seams, the drawstring from the hood long gone. Once bright red, the lettering on the front has worn away to a faint shadow: ARMONIA MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY.
It’s the one thing of her own she still has from before the war. And as ragged as it is, the heavy knit fabric hasn’t lost all of its warmth. Pulled over a long-sleeved shirt, it’s still cozy and soft and comforting.
And sometimes Katie just wants something old and familiar.

Good Luck Being a Cop, Cop!
And lastly for @rvbrarepairweek but certainly not least, we have another Sister/Carolina fic. This time, Carolina is a cop that pulls Kaikaina over for speeding and is then inundated with flirting.
This week was a lot of fun and introduced me to a bunch of amazing ships I didn’t know I wanted until I saw them. Thank you for setting it up and organizing it!! <3
“Oh, fuck,” Kai muttered as she saw the cop car throw on its lights behind her. Just her luck. It’s not like she was going that fast. There was nobody else on the road, who cared if she was going twenty over the speed limit? Limits were for losers.
But, not interested in getting into an even higher speed chase, she slowed down and pulled over, rolling down her window and waiting to be reprimanded.
At least the cop was hot. Like, really hot. Kai had been ready to zone out while going through the proceedings. Yes, officer, I know I was speeding. Yes, officer, I’ll do better next time. Sorry, officer. Blah, blah, blah. The cop that came to her window, though, shook her out of her reverie.
“You know what else I can give you?” Kai asked with a raised eyebrow as she handed over her license and registration when prompted. “My phone number.”
“I’m sorry?”
“My phone number. So that you can contact me later.”
“It’s all in the system. Someone will be in touch with you to set up a court date, since this is your third violation in the last month.”
“No, no, no. Not for court, but for you and me. I know I like to live life in the fast lane, but I can take it as slow as you’d like.”
“Ma’am, I’m going to have to ask you to get out of the car.” The officer stepped back to allow Kai space to obey.
“Ooh, bossy. I like it.”
While the cop tried to keep her face stoic and present an annoyed demeanor, the slightest trace of a blush and a smile made it clear that Kai was getting through to her. It wasn’t about getting out of a ticket at this point; not that that wouldn’t be nice, but it was about getting with this gorgeous woman.
“Did I do something wrong, officer?” Kai asked once she was standing beside the cop, who was more than a head taller than herself.
“Yes, you did. You were twenty over the speed limit.”
“But why did I have to get out of the car?”
“So that I had time to figure out whether or not to chastise you for flirting with me or to give you my number.”
Kai’s eyes widened and she smirked. “You can do both. Tell me all the things I’ve done wrong.”
The blush that creeped into the officer’s face was almost as bright as her red hair. She scribbled something down on a notepad and handed the slip over to Kai.
“This is my number. Text me later. Not while you’re driving,” she added forcefully. She wrote out something else and handed it over as well. “And this is your ticket. You might get a date, but you’re still going to have to pay your fine.”
“Alright,” Kai sighed, then she perked up a moment later as she pushed the thought of the ticket out of her mind. “Ooh! When we meet up again later, bring those handcuffs, will ya?”
“We’ll see.”
“Bossy and vaguely mysterious. You are hitting all of the right boxes.”
“You’re free to go, Ms. Grif.”
Kai started to get back into her car, before calling back after the officer. “Hey! I didn’t get your name.”
“Call me Carolina.”
“It was really nice meeting you, Carolina.” Kai slammed the door and raced away from the chance encounter at an almost legal speed. She would be good and wait until she parked to text this Carolina. It’s not like she wanted to get into too much trouble with her… at least not yet.

Starting off @rvbrarepairweek with Carolina meeting Sister at the Blood Gulch Music Festival and hitting it off.
Kai rarely had the opportunity to actually watch any of the acts at the music festival she’d created since it had grown so popular. There were always last-minute problems and some prima donna that refused to perform in such a remote location despite the fact that they’d already arrived in Blood Gulch.
So, when she got the chance to get out of the office, she took it eagerly. They’d been able to snag one of her favorite acts for the festival this year, and nothing could keep her from seeing it; she ran headlong into the mass of bodies milling around in front of the stage.
She jostled her way toward the front, where she bumped directly into a tall, muscular redhead.
“Wow…” Kai whispered under her breath. Regaining herself, she steadied herself and gestured toward the stage. “Have you seen them perform before?”
The redhead seemed to notice Kai for the first time. “Oh, no. I haven’t heard of most of the musicians here, actually.”
“So… why are you here? Not that I’m complaining…”
“I have leave for a few days, and I had to get away for a bit.”
“You’re in the army?”
She nodded.
“So is my big brother. I was for a little bit too, but now I run this thing.”
“You run this? That’s impressive.”
Kai grinned smugly at that comment. “Thank you! Oh, my name is Kaikaina, by the way, but call me Kai.”
“Carolina.”
“Maybe after the show you can tell me more about your work in the army? Or about whatever you want, honestly. Drinks are on me.”
Carolina smiled slightly, but replied, “Um, I don’t know about that…”
Before Kai could ask why, the band took the stage and their eardrums were filled with a euphony of music. The crowd shifted as most everyone started to sing and dance along to the beat, separating Kai and Carolina. It wasn’t as if she couldn’t find someone else to hook up with by the end of the night, but Kai had been really intrigued by that redhead and wanted to get to know her better, sex or no sex.
For now, it didn’t matter, though. For the next hour or so, Kai was swept up in the music, the crowd, the sweat, and the pulsating beat that flowed through her entire body.
As the last song started to fade in, someone slammed forcefully into her side, and she turned to face the redhead from before.
“Couldn’t stay away, huh?” Kai yelled above the music.
“What?”
Kai leaned in closer, standing on her tiptoes to reach Carolina’s ear. “I said, you couldn’t stay away, huh? Since you bumped into me again?”
Carolina smiled. The faintest red was in her cheeks, though from the heat of the audience or from Kai’s closeness, she couldn’t be sure.
This close together, as the song reached its crescendo, it seemed inevitable that their lips met and their bodies pressed even tighter together. At first, the kiss was tentative, but then their lips found each other again and again and again, matching the bass line that shook their hearts.
As the song finished and the crowd started to disperse, Carolina seemed to remember herself and pulled back. Kai could have stayed there all night, below the empty sky with her.
Carolina broke the silence by asking, “You still up for buying drinks after?”
“Abso-fucking-lutely.”
“Good. Lead the way.”
Kai took Carolina’s hand and led her away from the stages to where they could spend some more time together. All of their obligations could wait; right then, all they had was the melody they shared together.

I was thinking about Kai (as you do) and I wondered, what if the girl she kissed so hard at New Year’s she wound up wearing Kai’s heart shaped glasses afterwards was South? So, naturally, I had to write it for @rvbrarepairweek
(I’m going to be flying tomorrow and probably won’t have time to post that day’s fic so I’m just going to do it early. Also I wound up with one extra fic so another day is going to wind up with two fics as well!)
Kai stepped up to the bar to grab another glass of champagne, her surroundings muted by the faint pink lenses of the heart shaped glasses she wore for the New Year’s Eve festivities. But near the bar, all of the color came back when she saw the woman standing nearby, angrily sipping her own champagne. Her face wore a scowl but that didn’t stop Kai from stepping over to her after getting her drink.
“Hey there, how’s it going?”
The blonde woman looked up but said nothing.
“Happy New Year’s and all that. I hope I’m not bothering you, but, like, wow.”
“Wow?”
“Yeah. You are wow. You’re fucking stunning. And the way you’re aggressively drinking that champagne makes me think you could kick the shit out of me and I’d thank you.”
The woman smirked. “You probably would.”
“Oh my god,” Kai gasped, wanting her even more now. Regaining herself slightly, she asked, “What’s your name? I’m Kai.”
“Call me South.”
It was a weird name, but definitely not the strangest Kai had heard. And it fit the whole brooding and mysterious woman thing she had going on.
“I haven’t seen you with a date or anything. Did you come here with somebody?”
She shook her head. “The invite came from a friend of a friend, that sort of thing. This isn’t the sort of event I usually go to.”
Kai glanced at the clock. It was almost midnight.
“Well, you know, if you need a New Year’s kiss, I’m totally available. It’s good luck, or something. And you wouldn’t want to start the new year without that luck boost, right?”
The countdown had only just started for the last ten seconds of the year when South set aside her drink and tugged Kai toward her forcefully. There was no hesitation when she pressed their lips together. They held each other tightly and didn’t even hear as the counter hit zero and the celebration around them hit a high point, they were so absorbed in the moment and the feeling of their bodies pressed up against each other.
Only after a few eager-to-leave partygoers bumped into them and jostled them apart did they realize their surroundings. As Kai took in the amazing woman she’d just been making out with, she started to laugh.
“What?” South snapped.
“How did you end up with my glasses?”
A chuckle escaped South’s lips as well when she noticed that she was now wearing the heart shaped glasses Kai had been wearing before they started kissing.
“Keep them,” Kai said. “Something to remember me by.”
“I don’t think I’ll need the glasses for that.”
“Yeah. I am pretty unforgettable, huh. Well, what do you say, we go somewhere more private where you can tell me more about yourself?”
“You just want to go fuck, right?”
“Both?”
South grinned and adjusted the glasses she now wore. “You. I like you.”
