reblog if you’re on team “I acknowledge that Billy Hargrove is a highly flawed individual and in no way condone the shit he’s done, but I strongly believe he was deserving of a redemption arc and it hurts my soul that The Duffers chose not to explore that”

Connor is a villain
(I apologize in advance if this is choppy/poorly paced! I had to boil this down quite a bit because I’m not much of a writer and I have trouble organizing my thoughts... 🤦🏻‍♂️)
I know some people tend to get up in arms when Connor is called a villain but it’s just a much better representation of his character, especially when Cyberlife is acknowledged as the antagonist! I think people tend to get so defensive about it because they aren’t really understanding the difference between a villain and an antagonist:
Villain: a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot / a person or fictional character who is evil or who causes danger or harm.
Antagonist: a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary / the principal character in opposition to the protagonist or hero of a narrative or drama.
Based solely on that definition Connor is a villain! For the majority of the story he does evil things, regardless of if the player has him on the path to deviancy or not. Connor directly puts Kara, Markus, and all other deviant androids in danger. Even when you don’t list out his actions (or possible actions) the core of his mission is to aid in the slaughter and oppression of an entire group! (Hopefully I don’t need to explain how that is evil or how his actions/motives are important to the plot.)
To pinpoint the antagonist/driving force behind our villain it’s important to acknowledge that Connor didn’t come up with his own moral compass or goals.
“Algorithms don’t have access to the ground truth” (computer lingo for veritas), Dwork explained. If there is bias in the data used to make the decision, the decision itself may be biased.
— Taken from the article Artificial Intelligence and Ethics by Jonathan Shaw
One of the ethical issues in creating artificial intelligence is AI bias. Artificial Intelligence is the core of what makes androids possible in this setting. The science behind AI is long and forever adapting; however, one of the main components of modern AI is the fact that they require a lot of data input, algorithms, and programming. All of this input comes directly from the hands of humans. Connor’s role as a villain is only derived from what he was programmed to do, and this programming is directly from the hands of Cyberlife. This lands them in the role of our stories big bad! By definition Cyberlife is the main antagonist!
It’s very obvious throughout the plot that the corporation actively rivals and opposes Markus, Kara, and all of the other androids they created. (Cyberlife also rivals Connor because he is a member of the oppressed group and has the option to deviate.) Extra details provided in different magazines scattered throughout the game also bring light to the full extent of Cyberlife‘s role in the story conflict.
In short: Connor is a villain but he is also a protagonist - his actions are a piece of the conflict. Cyberlife is the antagonist - they are the driving force in the conflict.
I could probably keep going on and on about the nature of villain versus antagonist and how Connor/Cyberlife fit into each roll but this is a slippery slope of tangents I don’t want to try to control...
