Why I love Tinted Glasses with all my heart 💗

For those who don’t know, Tinted Glasses is the DDVAU ship between HG and Grian and it is my absolute all time favorite ship and I am here to explain why.

*Disclaimer: I love all the ships an unhealthy amount, however my own personal preference is Tinted Glasses. If you love another ship, I will happily gush and squeal about it with you. But this post is just explaining why my personal favorite ship is Tinted Glasses.

There can be actual character development

The four love square ships are SunWarrior(Grian & Scar), Cupid(HG & CG), Scarred Heart(CG & Scar), and of course, Tinted Glasses. Both SunWarrior and Cupid are one-sided at this point: Grian liking Scar and HG liking CG. However, neither of these ships seem like they evolve anywhere anytime soon as Grian doesn’t really think anything is going to happen with Scar (Valentine's special) and HG has more of an infatuation with CG as HG finds him interesting (he likes the idea of CG, not the actual person). Scarred Heart doesn’t seem like it’s going to progress anytime soon either as both Scar and CG are too busy flirting and blushing; not to mention Grian is sad that it's CG that Scar finds pretty and not him and we run into the same problem with the CG infatuation.

Now, for the next part, let me explain the ship name Tinted Glasses: both HG and Grian have “glasses” (HG has a tinted visor), so that’s the surface level of the ship name. However, the name also refers to the saying “rose-tinted glasses”: a perspective that is overly optimistic or cheerful, often to the point of being unrealistic. It means someone is only seeing the positive aspects of a situation, person, or thing, while ignoring or downplaying the negative or less desirable elements. All the other ships of the love square have rose-tinted glasses to some extent as Grian has them for Scar and Scar has them for CG. However, the Tinted Glasses ship doesn’t have rose-tinted glasses as HG sees Grian as his coworker and Grian sees HG as a cop that upholds an unfair and corrupt government (Grian wears wither rose-tinted glasses for HG, cuz he see an overly negative perspective of HG - do you like the term? I just coined it!). This allows for actual room for character development as they aren’t blinded by how “perfect” and wonderful the other person is. 

By interacting with each other, there is a chance for each of them to widen their perspectives and become better, more understanding people in the process. They can show the other what it is like for the other person on the other side: HG can learn just how hard it is for mutants and others under the government’s rule with hiding and stereotypes while Grian can be shown a less black-and-white one dimensional perspective of HG and government as a whole. Not to mention, HG seems to have a bit of an ego and a bit too much power, so the fact that Grian is someone who actually stands up to HG without (much) fear and doesn’t just fawn or submit is something new to Scar that will help bring down his ego and power a bit. It also makes them more of equals if they ever have a relationship or even just a friendship, which is always important.

It can lead to a deeper level of attraction

Both Grian and HG already find each other physically attractive(contrary to popular belief, even though they are gay disasters, they aren’t blind).

However, for an actually decent relationship, they need something beyond physical attraction, which is what interacting with each other honestly can bring about. If HG tones down the manipulation and Grian works on actively hating HG less, then they can have a chance to share personal stuff (Grian being a hiding mutant, HG being a tough job, ect.). A chance to look under the masks they both wear and actually get to know each other on a personal level almost nobody else has (like Marichat). They could also get a chance to figure themselves out and confront things they have been avoiding together.

Mind you, that will probably take a long time considering Grian seems to basically loathe HG right now, but it could get there eventually.

The drama, angst, and emotions!

Tinted Glasses has a lot more potential for angsty and emotional scenes than the other ships, of which the most angst and emotion the other ships will have will probably be pining and whining along with some blushing and nervousness. It’s also a forbidden love story! A civilian who is hiding their mutant status with a hero in charge of mutant affairs in the city (like dealing with civilians who hide their mutant status). Not to mention, they are both trying to manipulate each other (based on what HG has already done and what the chp. 23 doodle indicates with the song Strategy by Twice).

The drama! Both are trying to manipulate each other, and slowly fall for each other and start freaking out over it. Additionally, if they were to get into a relationship, it would put the other in danger where if someone were to find out, that someone could use the other person as a weakness for the person they are targeting, emphasizing the need to keep the relationship secret (forbidden love!). Also, this would make HG and Mimic rivals in terms of Grian’s love; something I thought was funny, especially with HG and Mimic’s voice claims being of Wukong and Macaque from LEGO Monkie Kid.

In conclusion, I love Tinted Glasses because of the potential for the characters to grow, the depth of the potential relationship, and the potential it has to rip my heart out and make me sob hysterically. Dang, I love these gay disasters.
