due to the poor image quality (sorry about that), I can’t decipher most of the signs in the pictures, feel free to add additionial info.

in the first picture we can see children’s clothes of the Chishima Ainu (千島アイヌ)

in the third picture is a fine piece of 山丹服 (I assume), let’s see what the sign in the fourth picture says.

「山丹交易によってもたらされた数々の中国製品の中でも、特に、本来清朝の官服であった「山丹服」」は、蝦夷地をはじめ本州において「山丹錦」「拾徳」「蝦夷錦」等と呼ばれ、その華麗な色彩と文様からことのほか珍重されました。

本資料は、明治12年の開拓使函館支庁仮博物場の開館を記念して、百十三国立銀行を創設した函館の豪商杉浦嘉七から明治12年に寄贈されたもので、山丹交易におけるアイヌ民族と大陸とのかかわりを物語る極めて貴重なアイヌ民族資料の逸品として研究者をはじめ広く内外で注目されています」

“ “Santan-fuku” were the clothes of government officials of the Ching dynasty, and were highly prized by Japanese people because of their beautiful colors and patterns. They were brought into Japan through the Santan and Ainu peoples”

In the fifth picture we can read 蝦夷錦 on the sign in the bottom corner, so we have some 山丹服 here. The palm trees also don’t really look like the normal russian or Hokkaido Ainu swag.

in the sixth picture we can see a tobacco purse (煙草入れ)

the seventh and eight picture is what usually comes to mind, when I think of Ainu clothes

the illustration in the ninth picture is a copy from 秦檍丸’s 「蝦夷島奇観」.

looking for that particular document I found this scroll in the 国立国会図書館 archive. check it out, it has lots of interesting illustrations regarding Ainu culture like tattoos, bears and hunting traps. on “page” 40 you’ll find an illustration similar to the one in this post. anyway, back to this picture here. there’s some additional info on the right side, I’ll start with the top row:

色布置文衣（ルウンぺ）

北海道噴火湾沿いに位置する八雲地方、虻田地方、白老地方のアイヌの人々が着ていたもので、手の込んだ最も美しい衣服といわれています。

木綿地の衣服には、絹や更紗、小袖の端裂、木綿の古裂などの切り伏せや刺繍によって独特の文様があしらわれ、文様の付け方などに地域的特性がみられます。

また衣服の文様は美しく着飾るだけでなく、襟首、袖口、裾まわりのあいている部分や死角になっている部分から悪霊が忍び込まないように魔除けとして施されました。

「幕末のアイヌ絵師の第一人者平沢屏山によるもので、屏山自身、日高・十勝地方のアイヌの人々と一緒に生活を共にし、その暮らしを詳細に観察して絵画におさめたものです。

アイヌ風俗絵屏風は、アイヌ民族の大らかな一年をとおした季節ごとの生業の様子をあえて12ヶ月に区分し、その月々の主なる暮らしぶりを巧みな描写で紹介しています。巧みな描写は、たぐい稀なるアイヌ絵の逸品に仕上げているばかりでなく、アイヌ民族の物質文化・精神文化を知ることのできる貴重な資料になっています」

“This screen was painted by Byozan Hirasawa, a well known painter of Ainu scenes, in the closing days of the Tokugawa government. Hirasawa had lived among the Ainu people of Hidaka and Tokachi areas. He observed their daily lives in detail and illustrated it realistically on this screen.“

After arriving in Hakodate in the evening I went right away to the nearest Seicomart and got myself some good old チキンたっぷりペペロンチーノ. It’s been a while, so I had to commemorate it with a picture, even if it’s a shitty one.

The next day I went around the harbor and to the 坂本龍馬記念館

after my visit to the museum, I went to the harbor and boarded a ferry to Hokkaido. after a month of traveling I was happy to come back home to Hokkaido

my next destination was 青森. inside the train station you can see lots of old photographs, so if you have the time, you should check them out.

30.03.2017 on my way to the station I passed the 石割桜. the sakura front had yet to reach 盛岡, so I couldn’t see the tree in full bloom. but it looks cool anyway. I also saw that cute kappa statue
