TV REVIEW: Superstore 1x2 “Magazine Profile”

So, in this episode, people from the company magazine .... are coming to our show's Cloud 9, and Gary, the main manager, is going to give the interview, but is very insecure and goes to ridicolous lengths to impress. Meanwhile, Jonah tells .... that the magazine people will want his picture on the cover of the magazine because he's a black disabled person and so they'll view him as a token black man. Well, he's right, and the photographer chases .... around the store to get his picture. This sub-storyline is really the only funny part of the episode, and it is actually funny, even the obscene gesture scene is funny somehow (and obscene gestures are never funny). Sadly, the main storyline, Gary, Amy, and Jonah giving the interview is not funny and kind of dumb. I didn't get into it. So, while this episode is better than the original just because it's actually kind of funny, it's still not much better. My rating for the episode is: Meh.

COMIC REVIEW: Luke Cage #1

Luke Cage is a hero for hire, and that sets up some pretty interesting situations. Seriously, I was more impressed with this one issue than I have been with all the other Marvel comic titles out right now combined. The writing is downright amazing, it is written very well. The thoughts going on in Luke's head, as he tells the reader about his business and about the benefits and the myths of having bulletproof skin. Then, when his old friend .... dies, reading the dialogue between him and other characters felt like actual conversations. I am very excited at the direction this series is going and can't wait for #2! My rating: love.

TV REVIEW: Superstore 1x1 “Pilot”

The pilot episode of Superstore, which is just the retail store version of "The Office". As someone who does work in retail, I decided to finally check out this show. To be quite honest, it's really stupid. There are no relatable characters, no one really feels human. There are the two Christians who are nuts, in completely different ways. One is an incompetant, overly-religious pathetic excuse of a man, and the other is an overly tough, violent woman. Then for the characters there is the over-achiever (who sadly, is the only character felt even remotely human), the manager who is just bored, the pregnant worker who feels shoe-horned into the story, the main character who doesn't really have one defining characteristic, and the black disabled guy.
Anyway, so the story is the main character, Jonah, and the over-achiever guy, Mateo, get a job at Cloud 9, a large retail store chain (it's basically Walmart, except it's not open 24/7). Mateo views Jonah as his main competition and does everything he can to make Jonah look like a fool. Meanwhile Jonah gets off on the wrong foot with the manager, Amy, and tries to get back on her good side. Also, the pregnant girl, Cheyenne, is asked by her boyfriend, Bo, to marry him. She refuses him so he pulls off a hostage situation in hopes to force her into marrying him in what is probably the most cringe-worthy scene in the episode.
So, in the end, most of the jokes don't work, it feels surreal, and the story is just weird, but despite all that, I didn't hate the episode, it somehow was kind of entertaining despite the fact. So, my rating for this episode is: Meh.

COMIC REVIEW: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2

Shredder is dead and now Baxter Stockman rises. Baxter Stockman is an evil scientists who creates these things called "mousers" (with the help of a girl named April O'Neil) to kill the rats that live in the sewers of New York City, but, once April realizes that Baxter really created them to rob banks, Stockman tries to use the mousers to kill her. Then the turtles find her, save her, and help her defeat Stockman. First thing I want to say is that I love the art in this issue. Seriously, I couldn't stop staring and studying the art closely, I just love the artwork in this issue. That being said, let's move on to more important things.
First off, the big complaint I had of the last issue was that it felt rushed. I did not feel that in this issue. This issue did not feel rushed. Also, Baxter Stockman, while he was basically a cartoon villan, his cartoonish behavior somehow worked. It made him a better and more threatening villain to see the great lengths he would go to achieve his goal. Also, I loved the introduction of April O'Neil, just an ordinary girl who meets the turtles by accident. She really does feel like an actual person who you could relate to, which is pretty rare in TMNT.
Anyway, my rating for this issue is: love

COMIC REVIEW: The Avengers #1

The Avengers #1: So, in this first issue of The Avengers (2016), we see Kang the Conquerer and a Centurion joining forces to destroy the Avengers. The Avengers find out it's because Vision ticked them off by stealing .... Meanwhile, Peter Parker, tries to get the Avengers to use his tower he just built for the Avengers.
So, this was a pretty fun book to read. It was pretty light-hearted, never got too serious and never got too silly. It was just plain fun, which is what comic books are supposed to be but very few are (sadly). Watching Peter Parker trying to keep from the Avengers the fact that he's Spider-Man but also trying to speak for Spidey was pretty fun to read as well. Anyway, my rating for this is: love

MOVIE REVIEW: Master and Commander: Far Side of the World
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World is one of my favorite movies of all-time, and there are many reasons for this. First off, the acting. There are no poor or mediocre performances, everyone acting is top notch, especially the two main actors, Russell Crowe, who puts on the best performance of his career (seriously), and Paul Bettany.
All the characters are believable. Watching Captain Jack Aubrey (or Lucky Jack), played by Russell Crowe is an absolute joy. He loves his crew, and he shows that time and time again, but knows when to come down on them, and Crowe does a job showing the conflict Aubrey has going on inside of him. Paul Bettany who plays the doctor is truly a lovable character, it’s not hard to see yourself in him.
The story, which is of Aubrey and his crew (they are British) must hunt down and either destroy or capture the Acheron (a French ship) during the Napoleonic wars. It’s a simple plot that makes for a beautiful story. This movie doesn’t have a lot of action in it and instead relies on character development and good dialogue. Seriously, the best scenes in the movie are ones of characters talking to each other and Aubrey and the doctor playing their instruments together.
Anyway, this is a great movie, and my rating for it is: love

COMIC REVIEW: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Volume 1, Edition 1 (Mirage Comics)

This is where it all started. What was originally just a Daredevil parody became a cultural phenomeon. This comic is dark, gritty, and violent. These turtles are killers. Shredder is not a joke of a villain (and neither are the Foot Ninjas, they are actually good). The only problem I have with this comic is that it feels rushed.
Rating: Love

MOVIE REVIEW: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

*SPOILERS*
After hearing the reviews for this movie, not only the negative reviews but those calling this a brilliant movie, I was skeptic and getting myself ready for disappointment. There were only about 20 disappointing minutes in the movie and those were from about 30 minutes in to 50 minutes in, and that was it, the rest was amazingly good, even better than the original.
Most sequels fall in the trap of “let’s take everything people loved from the first one and exploit that thing!” This movie didn’t. This movie was smart, it told a great story, much better than the last one that I found to be pretty pointless, and introduced new characters in a way that actually fit the movie. Anyway let’s take a look at some good points:
-Star Lord: Even more relatable in this movie than in the last one, Chris Pratt is just an amazing actor.
-Gamora & Nebula: Watching these sisters grow and their interactions, it felt human, it really really felt real, it was endearing, in a kind of sick, twisted way.
-Yondu: Easily the star of the movie. Not only is he awesome, but this movie really digs deep into his character. (SPOILER ALERT) When he sacrifices himself at the end for Star Lord, it’s touching and shows how much he truly cared (END OF SPOILERS). Also, seeing him relate to Rocket was touching. Speaking of Rocket:
-Rocket: This movie really took a look at why he acts the way he does, it’s (SPOILER ALERT) because he’s scared and doesn’t want to show it. (END OF SPOILERS)
Now for the bad:
-Ego: Another forgettable, terrible villain with a generic plot to wipe out the universe, like seriously, his reasoning made no sense.
-The humor & language: While I would never let a child watch the first Guardians movie because of the language, this one not only is more vulgar but contains inappropriate humor that I honestly had a hard time getting over. Now, that’s not to say every joke is bad, they are not, but there are a few jokes that I believe should not have been made. The rest was fine and funny though.
In the end, I loved this movie and my rating for it is: love

MOVIE REVIEW: Guardians of the Galaxy

So, after writing my review for the new Guardians of the Galaxy comic and admitting I had never seen any of the movies I realized it just might be time to watch them. So, I watched them both, but here is my review for the first one.
Let’s start with the good. Wow, what a blast. Star-Lord is a pretty decently relatable guy, you know, he felt...human (pun sorta intended). Rocket Racoon truly is the star of the show with his cockiness and just how much fun it is to watch him. Drax is an idiot, but lovable idiot and Gamora, I really don’t know how to put my thoughts on her into words, but I like her. Groot, well, he’s good, to be honest though, I found him forgettable. Anyway, the music was used masterfully in this movie and boy, did it help make this a fun movie to watch!
On the bad side though, Ronan was a TERRIBLE villain, Nebula reminded me of Captain Phasma from Star Wars, a villain with great potential but completely wasted. Also, the story, what really was the point of the story, I’m honestly cannot really think of what the point of this movie was. It was fun and heart-warming and smart, but a bit pointless.
Anyway, at the end the rating I’ll give this movie is: good
Finally, is there a movie you want me to review? What are your thoughts on this movie? Tell me in the comment section below!

COMIC REVIEW: Black Bolt #1

Black Bolt and the Inhumans are a fascinating but relatively unknown part of the Marvel universe, and that really is a shame, but this comic doesn't seem to be doing anything to help that. The writing is childish, I mean, I really felt like I was reading a child's book. There was no depth to the writing at all. The story doesn't elaborate on much, it just repeats certain things over and over. It's pretty annoying. This character so far isn't getting the respect deserved. This is disappointing.
Rating: Bad

MOVIE REVIEW: Ocean Waves

I am a fan of Studio Ghibli, especially their films that spend a lot of time exploring their characters, which is what this film does. It explores the girl and guy, as we watch them send each other mixed signals, flirt, and then slap each other on the face.
Taku, the main character is a boy who is a bit of a rebel at school and has a good friend, Yutaka, when a girl from Tokyo, Rikako, arrives. The way the romance between the characters is shown is beautiful and curious. The movie raises questions about whether certain people, like whether Taku and Rikako like each other, and doesn’t really answer and just keeps toying with your mind. But I loved how it did that! The characters are well-developed, interesting, you always want to learn more about them, and have good dialogue. In the end, I recommend this movie. My rating is: good.

COMIC REVIEW: All-New Guardians of the Galaxy #1

*WARNING: SPOILERS*
The first issue of the All New Guardians of the Galaxy is here! To be honest, I’ve never seen any of the movies and only have read a few of the comics, so I’m pretty much a newbie to the franchise. So, that being said, here’s what I thought of this issue.
The heroes in this issue are:
Star Lord
Drax
Gamora
Rocket Raccoon
Baby Groot
So, in this story, the Guardians of the Galaxy use Galactus as a diversion while they steal from a vault for a buyer. Drax is now a pacifist which adds an interesting twist to the story. So anyway, the planet they steal from is Citopia which is supposed to be impenetrable, but the Guardians manage to steal from it anyway.
So they go to rendezvous with the buyer who turns out to be the Grandmaster. The thing they had to steal was a tachyon bubble containing a baby universe inside of it, but, this was just a test. The Grandmaster gives them a challenge, to steal the Hujahdarian egg from The Collector. The Guardians don’t like the challenge, but it turns out to be a double-cross so the Guardians are forced to go along with it. Meanwhile, Rocket Racoon and Gamora realize there’s something wrong with Groot, he isn’t growing. The final page shows a man growing what appears to be an army of Groots.
Anyway, this was an interesting story, not much to really say but a good start. I’m definitely hooked, I want to see what’s next, so my rating for this is: Good

Ratings System
So I hope to start doing movie, book, music, and TV reviews soon and so I want to take the time to explain the ratings system. Because I am a millennial I love simplicity so here are pretty simple ratings that shouldn't require any explanation. Here’s the rating system, from best to worst:
Love
Good
Meh
Bad
Trash
Boring
So, there you go, the ratings that will be used on my reviews that will start pretty soon!
