I think it’s really interesting in TFOne that the High Guard, specifically Soundwave, Starscream, and Shockwave don’t intervene in the Megatron vs. Optimus fight at the end until Optimus brings out the energon axe. The same energon axe that Zeta Prime used to use and seems to be connected to the Matrix’s power. I think one potential interpretation and headcanon of the scene is that they were fine with Megatron and Optimus fighting it out and basically to them it was ‘blowing off steam’, but the moment they see the axe I think something very ingrained in them switches to ‘oh scrap this fight is getting serious’ and 'we need to intervene before somebody gets killed'. When you look at their reactions to seeing the axe Soundwave, Starscream, and Shockwave look very surprised.

The High Guard fought in a war against the Quintessons alongside the Primes and have probably seen that axe brutally kill people, like slicing and dicing multiple Quintessons. You probably don't bring out the axe unless things are serious or maybe during a controlled sparring match for training. Zeta Prime also probably has years of experience with the weapon and with the Matrix that the High Guard wouldn't be as on edge seeing it and would trust Zeta to control its power. But a bot who seems to only have the Matrix for five minutes pulling out what is to them Zeta Prime's battle axe used in war with zero training of how to wield it responsibly from their pov seems more extreme and probably makes them view Optimus as the more unstable one in the moment both on a conscious and subconscious level because of the familiarity with the weapon he's wielding.

Also I know they were shooting and throwing ammunition at Optimus, but I think one interesting fact about their attacks on Optimus were that they were pretty much nonlethal which we have proof of since Optimus throws their own weapons back at them and they are still alive. Like we see Optimus redirect Starscream's missile and smash it on Soundwave in a direct hit who doesn't die and redirects Shockwave's shot so that Shockwave shoots himself instead with the blast meant for Optimus and he doesn't die either. Soundwave doesn't even use his shoulder cannon to attack, but we only see him use hand to hand combat in his short altercation with Optimus. I know it might sound wild, but based on this I kind of headcanon that they actually weren't trying to kill Optimus in this scene. To them I think it was trying to separate what they saw as a schoolyard fight that has clearly gotten out of hand. Of course from Optimus' view he would have no way of seeing that and it is a logical conclusion from his pov that they are following Megatron and therefore also trying to kill him.

Also I would like to disclaimer that I don't blame Optimus for not interpreting it that way or for the later banishment because he's had like zero time to process anything that happened in the last few minutes, like being shot by accident by his best friend and then purposely dropped down a hole to die by said best friend and betrayed, dying and then coming back to life on top of everything else that happened that day and feeling the need to stop what he sees as his best friend and his new followers from shooting up the city and getting bystanders hurt is a lot to take in. Like is it politically and strategically stupid to banish the entire High Guard and potential army? Absolutely. Do I blame him for his decision in that moment? Absolutely not. Megatron literally starts blasting immediately after Optimus comes back to life so there wasn't a lot of time to process or talk anything out and everyone from Megatron to Optimus to the High Guard are all acting on emotions set to level 10 so smart long term political maneuvering is not on anyone's mind at the moment lol

I just know TFOne Thundercracker has the wildest author’s notes on his Cybertronian fanfic stories, especially during and after Sentinel’s betrayal and subsequent 50 cycles of exile.
