SAI is being real weird. Usually when screenshot typed text and then place it onto an image, I make that layer a ‘multiply’ layer and that automatically gets rid of the white in the background so its just the black text. I’ve used this for so many CaTCG posters. But now all of a sudden that’s just not working??

i did (unfortunately) read almost the entire comic. hussie does put himself in as a character and at one point stalks vriska because... yknow... thats what normal adults do with their underaged characters. i havent heard about him basing vriska off himself, but itd make sense considering everything else

I know I’m primarily an SU crit blog but Homestuck does legit have worse narrative problems than SU does. SU started with the intention of trying to be progressive even if it spiraled into a misguided direction. Homestuck was never about that.

Describing Black Hair in Fantasy (Dreadlocks, Braided Styles, etc)

How do you describe afro hairstyles in a world where the word doesn’t exist? 

My advice for describing afro hairstyles effectively in fantasy is to:

Describe the style

Use words from the term in the description

Have someone read it; do they know what you’re describing?

Describe the style. 

What does this hairstyle look like, exactly? What is a braid? What are dreadlocks? How do you braid, or how do you form this particular type of braid? 

Look up existing descriptions of the term, and use language from the definition. Combine, reword and trim as necessary. There’s no need to be wordy. A well-constructed sentence or two should serve its purpose.

Great sources are everything from hair glossaries (especially those found on Black hair websites) natural hair vlogs, and even the thesaurus.

Here are some word associations to play with:

General Textures & Looks

These words can help be more specific with the look of their hair/hairstyle. Tight, tiny braids. Cloudy puffs of hair in twin pigtails.

Use words from the term itself in the description.  

Readers should get an “aha” moment when you do this. Twisted hair probably mean twists. Bantu knots resemble knots. 

Cornrows: 

Cornrows get their name from rows of corn with connections to African chattel slavery. Say you have a character with this style, but those historical connotations don’t exist in this world , or corn isn’t something your character would know about. There are still ways to make the connection.

Example: “She wore her hair in neat rows of braids along her scalp.” 

The key word here is rows.

Assuming you can use a part of a word that does exist in your timeline, use it for the strongest connection to its real world counterpart. See the next example:

Dreadlocks: 

Another Black hairstyle with history to its name, it may not make sense to use the term in your setting. However, you likely could still slip the word “lock or locked” into your description to clarify for readers what you’re getting at.

Example: “His skin was the same medium brown as her own and that of her people, but his hair was thick and coarse and pulled into the rough locks that looked like braids but weren’t, like the people to the south whose skin was darker.”

What’s particularly great about this description is: 

The use of locks to make the connection to dreadlocks.

Connecting the hairstyle to a certain people. It isn’t just a style anyone can wear, but it has regional roots and is worn by a particular group.

Adding other indications of race such as brown skin, and the nod to him coming from a place where the people have dark skin.

Have someone read it. 

Have more than one person read your description. It would be great if at least one of those people is Black (and/or familiar with the style). Does the reader know what you’re trying to describe? Are you being concise, or over explaining it to the point of confusion? If your readers can name the style or picture it relatively quickly, then you’ve got a winner.

Peridot and Bismuth - Redesign

alright so uhh i didnt upload any redesigns yesterday, i ended up falling alseep right after i posted my ocs and then.....didnt wake up until this morning. whoops so to make up for it heres peridot and bismuth. two for one deal! only the cg outfits, since peridots homeworld uniform didnt change any aside from colour

peridot- her cg outfit is still inspired by the cgs. star on the chest from pearl, star on knees from amethyst, shirt and boots from garnet (she is wearing boots under her limb enhancers) which! i did give her her limb enhancers back. theyre such a cool piece of tech, and i was so sad when she lost them in the show :( bismuth helped her design these

bismuth- im gonna be honest i like her first design way better. her second design is for sure Not finalized and i dont like it that much, but im not sure what to do with it. so please send me some feedback yall i am so lost i gave her some Big Gloves because theyre more blacksmith-y and she looks good with them.

aand their gems. their colours were both picked from their respective irl stones. this is a bit of a short post compared to my other ones, but ive been surprisingly busy lately? way busier than i anticipated. but its also because ive suddenly gained the energy to clean and i must follow that impulse as far as it will take me.

So tired of the way people police personality disorders.

I read a reddit post in "Am I The Asshole" where people tell their stories and users give judgment and I usually like these because even though I don't comment (I usually watch some bot read them on YouTube) I love drama.

But there was this one where a stepfather says that his daughter has Anti Social Personality Disorder, she was diagnosed young because of some abusive and cruel symptoms she was showing. But with a lot of therapy, love and care she was able to have a seemingly perfectly fine life. She has a good relationship with her parents, a good job and there doesn't really appear to be anything wrong in her life.

HOWEVER.

She has a serious boyfriend and the stepfather thinks he is planning on proposing. This boyfriend is in love with her, seems to really care about her etc....buuut he doesn't know about her diagnosis.

So the "Am I The Asshole" comes from the fact that the stepfather has said that if she doesn't tell her boyfriend about her diagnosis then he will. That the boyfriend deserves to know etc etc blah blah.

Most people said he was not the asshole and I'm not able to get over it.

Like, the stigma around personality disorders is so strong and you need only look at the comments to see why someone diagnosed might want to keep it to themselves.

ASPD is a highly stigmatised disorder, the OP of the thread called her a "sociopath" himself and all the baggage that brings with it.

But it never seemed to occur to anyone that her disorders might be her own business and she should decide when and if she tells someone else. If she is controlling the symptoms of her disorder, has professional help and healthy relationships why should other people care, if not a bias against "sociopaths"?

People with mental health issues or personality disorders should not be given ultimatums to tell other people their business. While you might think that it might be healthy to confide such a thing, you don't get to decide for everyone else.

People with personality disorders are treated like they are not deserving of the same privacy and space as others because there is a theoretical chance you could be abusive. And due to the stigma you are presumed abusive and given a different set of rules and boundaries than other people.

People don't owe others a diagnosis. You can have different opinions about what you think is the most healthy decision and what you would do etc, but the fact that someone would give her an ultimatum over this shows that this stigma is so deep. A parental figure who says they love them, that they have done well, that they are loving and good still sees their disorder as an addendum to their existence.

Sure, keep your eye out for red flags. But to me, giving someone an ultimatum over their own personal, medical issues and threatening to interfere with their private issues and relationship? That's a red flag all of its own.

People want those with personality disorders to get diagnosed and have treatment to help manage symptoms, yet they don't realise (or care) that this diagnosis can impact their whole life and have people feeling entitled to judge you in a way they would not judge others.

This is the social side of why people avoid diagnosis and hide their diagnosis and I'm so angry that most people sided with him. And the reasons? Will they were most often stereotypes, a need to "protect" this boyfriend from imaginary abuse, "what if the devil inside her takes control", "he deserves to know he might be in danger" etc etc etc

All walking examples of why someone might want to keep it to themselves, all part of the problem...all acting like she is inherently the problem.
