Eureka! For a long time I have been trying to solve the problem of how to blend colours and create graduation from one coloured fabric to the next. I have tried various products... pastels, acrylic paints and inks, and different application processes too, like mixing wool fibres into paint. None ticked every box. I need strength of colour, quick and easy application, and most importantly, a completely matt finish. Well this is it, as soon as paint touched fabric I just new ❤️ Thanks @cassart1984 for stocking this hard to find gem of a product, I will certainly be back for more! My mind is now whizzing with new possibilities. Think of all the beautiful, multicoloured, striped and spotty dogs I can now add to my to-do list. And the fine detail I can add with precision and ease. Here is a wip photo that was hiding in my phone, to accompany an exciting announcement. I have joined the website Patreon, you will find the link in my bio. I decided to make the leap, following quite a few tutorial requests. I am still exploring the possibility of creating a book with printed instruction, but in the meantime, Patreon will offer an online alternative. For now, I would ask anyone who might be interested in learning my techniques, to follow me on Patreon (free of charge). I need to polish up my video skills, and plan some learner projects, which may take a while. Once ready, I will send a shout out to all Patreon followers first, at which point you will have the opportunity to sign up if you wish - think of it like taking a course, but it's in bitesize chunks, from the comfort of your own home. It's Sunday night, and I am feeling a little rubbish with a cold. So I decided to do a little doodle. I used to draw when I was young, a lot, that was my thing. But I always felt a bit of a fraud, as I could only copy. I've never been able to draw from imagination or memory. I don't know why really, but I stopped drawing a long time ago. So tonight was a surprise, and it was nice, like old times. Well what a fun (and messy) day! A birthday treat for me - a sculpture workshop messumscreative with Charlotte Moreton. The brief - to make a wire armature from given measurements, pose and cover with plaster and scrim. Wow this was a challenge, I like to take my time, consider all possibilities... in this medium? Not a chance! * You have to work super fast, building the shape up in layers as the plaster dries very quickly. * You need to adapt to the variations in the plaster mix. All mixed by eye, the consistency alters the finish. * Be prepared for your scrim to stick to itself like cling film. * Oh, and did I mention the mess! The rewards - working in this medium is surprising. You relinquish control, but find freedom for it. It feels experimental, and refreshing. The whole group were amazed by how our sculptures transformed. And a lovely bonus that our work was dry by the end of the workshop, so we could take it straight home. If I were to do this again I would definitely cut my scrim in advance, and arrange in piles of short, medium and long. And bring a contrasting backdrop board so I could clearly view the outline shape whilst I was sculpting. A spinning stand would also be handy, as if you touch the sculpture to turn it, you can accidentally alter the form. The whole experience was a great lesson in how to cut to the chase, find the essence of your subject, and communicate canine energy in the simplest of forms. Apologies, but my posts are going to look a bit samey, whilst I perfect what is my largest body area to date. For this reason I'll be posting less often, until I get back to a stage that evolves a bit quicker. A trained eye will notice the subtle differences in each stage, things are tightening up now, and the placement of each ripple is carefully considered before tacking into place. Once these pins are removed, more take their place, in another phase of fine tuning. I like to document it all, as sometimes these sculptures seem so time consuming and overwhelming. It might not look like much progress, but after a lot of fine adjustments I am really starting to see the shapes appear. I love the fluidity of this pose.
