A scene I wouldâve liked to see in ACOSF
She could not get the look out of her mind â the way he looked at her for the briefest of seconds after catching the sight of an Illyrian female running off with a bow in her hand. She pretended not to notice it at the time, but she could not pretend it did not hurt. And now, an hour later, sitting across from each other at the cabin eating dinner, she could not find the appetite to eat.
Usually, she ignored it. Reveled in the reputation crafted for her. Never tried to correct anyone or offer her perspective. And she was content with that.
However, she felt as if they both reached a place where she could enjoy her time with him without the need walk around any judgement. Apparently not.
She spoke before she could stop herself. âHave it ever occurred to you that when you look at me and try to fathom how I could ever let my younger sister, a child, go into the woods, that I was also a child?â
He dropped his spoon and looked up. Surprise marred his features, and although he opened his mouth to speak, she could tell that he had no words.
So, she continued. âHave it ever occurred to you that to Feyre, it was a matter of taking care of the parent who favored her. Where to me it was being stuck with the parent who has absolutely no idea what to do with me after losing the one person who I felt understood me.â
Still no words. His mouth stopped gaping.
âYou look at me and see a horrible sister, and I may have been a horrible sister, but I was also a grieving child whoâs only purpose in life was to marry rich. I was schooled in languages, decorum, dancing, smiling, lying on my back and so on, but by the time we went under I had absolutely no idea how to tie my own laces or cook a decent meal.â
She could still remember her mother, fawning over new dresses as a maid filled their cups of lemon tea. Looking back at it now, Nesta wondered if her mother ever loved her or she loved living through her. But at the time their mother died, at the time she was grasping straws, she clung to the one thing that was familiar to her â protecting Elain who was the mere porcelain doll her mother crafted her to be.
âSo, I lashed out. And taking my age into consideration, I would say that was a normal response. And I am not holding my breath waiting for you or Rhysand â or god forbid Morrigan â to offer me redemption for something that is quite honestly none of your business. Iâm not sure if the three of you are looking for some kind of apology that I didnât try to mold myself into the only passable female image your brains are able to comprehend. And not that it is any of your business, I may not have been a huntress, but I was engaged to a man who stands by while his father beats his own mother. That was the only way I knew how I can offer support to my family.â
She did not mean to let that slip.
âI reserve any judgement I may have when I watch you around Morrigan and how you seem to treat her like a sister knowing how that started, when I watch Erisâ eye twitch whenever he sees you standing close to her, when I see they way the males here look and talk to you, because quite frankly I know how to not impose my opinion on something which I know nothing about. I ask of you the same and expect it.â
She held his gaze. She couldâve looked away, couldâve walked away. But she held it. She knew that whatever grounds they were walking on were delicate, and a part of her enjoyed her time with him, but she also knew if he couldnât agree to that she will simply walk away.
It took him five second to nod. Swallowing slowly. âI apologize.â
She held his gaze for a couple more seconds before going back to her food. She felt a bit weird, never in her life having said any of those words before, and not knowing now if she will grow into regretting them. She did not want them to come across as an invitation for him to look at a new angle at which he may change her â mold her into a Morrigan.
âYou are under no obligation to humor meâŠâ he started. She looked up, and apparently he was waiting for her eyes to meet his before continuing, âbut you could talk to me about your mother if youâd like. I can tell you what I remember of mine.â
There it is⊠the molding. Something must have shown in her eyes because he was quick to add. âI promise my only motive is my selfishness to know you more. Nothing else, nothing more.â
To know her more? What an absurd thought. And maybe that is why she nodded. Maybe because deep down, where a fragile heart still beats below the shield of her cruel self, the self that managed to keep that beat hidden from anyone who might take advantage of it, the self that manifested when she was barely ten because it already knew what kind of life sheâll be delt, that heart wanted someone to understand why sheâll never apologize for who she is and will never take kindly to anyone who bestows judgment to her cruel self. Because during cold nights, her cruel self was her guardian. And yes, its methods were not the gentlest, but what would you expect from something that was solely honed for basic survival.

Just a quick Nessian HC
You know how in Heir of Fire, Rowan says to Aelin âyou collect scars because you want proof that youâre paying for whatever sins youâve committedâ
Nesta knows that sheâs hurt Cassian, knows that every word sheâs told him (even though they were empty and she never believed them) caused Cassian pain.
âApologize to who you feel the need toâ thatâs what he told her that day
She hasnât apologized to him and itâs partly because she doesnât know how. Canât seem to look him in the eye and address the issue.
And deep down she hasnât forgiven herself for that
It started happening when she finally asked to train once a week at Windhaven. She wants other females to see her train, see what they can accomplish if they wish it.
One male said a snide comment about Cassain and she all but knocked him on his ass. It was the surprise element that allowed her to do it, but nonetheless the male got on his feet and started fighting her.
It was something she started doing when she heard anyone saying anything bad about Cassain.
Even when Cassain kept saying âitâs okay Nes, Iâm used to it by now. It doesnât matter.â She still managed to fight them all.
It wasnât until one fight that lasted for 15 minutes that Cassian noticed it. She was prolonging it on purpose. Her technique was similar to all the times she fought the other males, and much more sloppier than when she spars with him.
Later that night when he was brushing back her hair from her face to clean a small scar, he managed to whisper, âwhy?â
She blinked
âI know you fight better than this.â
She opened her mouth to say something but then couldnât say whatever she was gonna say.
âNes look at me. Talk to meâ
âI... I said the same thing to you onceâ
And thatâs when it dawned on him. She fights those males both for his and her sake. Her own personal punishment. The fights, all the beatings she allows herself to get from them, are her own way of paying for everything sheâs said to him.
âYou did.â He set down the cloth and held her face in his hands. âAnd if youâre looking for my forgiveness, you already have it. And if youâre looking for yours, I promise you wonât find it in a fighting pit. Fights are good for letting loose some tension, but they donât really matter much when it comes to what youâre looking to get out of them.â
A small tear slid down her face. âIâm sorryâ
He slowly kissed her.
âAs I am. I knew I crossed some lines at the time.â
She kissed him back, just as slowly.
âI forgive youâ
âHow generous. If you wanna do my a favor though? Next time youâre out their defending my honorâ - she snorted -âmake it quick. Show them exactly how skilled you are.â
âYou think so?â
âI know so. After all, your mate did teach you wellâ
She couldnât help rolling her eyes, even as she continued smiling
I though about this and now I canât get it out of my mind. I find Aelin and Nesta to be so similar in very different ways.

ACOSF in a nutshell
So I pulled an all-nighter to read the book, slept on my thoughts for days, and Iâm still disappointed. So hereâs a quick rant
I though we were going to the Illyrian mountains!! Not the house (even though the house was đđ»)
We know that Nestaâs been using sex/booze/music to drawn out the voices in her head, but when she was moved to the house where everything is utterly silent and she has no distractions louder than the voices in her head, she still seemed in control. Like maybe I just wanted angsty scenes, but I wouldâve loved to see her lose control and for IC to see exactly what sheâs going through
The âjust sexâ plot had so much potential with regards to Nesta being calm enough that she starts talking. Pillow talk anyone??? This couldâve been perfect for Nesta to talk about her trauma in a safe environment
To add on to the Nesta talking point, we still donât know what it was like for her in the Cauldron. I also wouldâve loved to know more about her mother since SJM basically spelled âmommy issueâ in big caps
The last 100 pages felt like SJM was like âohhh I forgot about the Queen, gotta tie that upâ
ALSO WAISTING THE BARGAIN ON âGO AWAYâ like excuse me but that was so out of character
I feel like if the âmateâ concept was introduced, then it should be done some justice. That fight was so useless. Nesta hadnât mentioned her humanity at all and now all of a sudden sheâs holding on to it. Like excuse me? Have we been reading a completely diff book thus far?
It also felt so out of character for Nesta to offer Cassian a biscuit for the mating acceptance. Sheâs an intense perfectionist character, and Cassian seems like he holds on to traditions in his own way, for that scene to be tied up with a biscuit. It felt like we were missing a scene where theyâre back at the house after everything, and for Nesta to ask about it and Cassian to explain it. She probs then would say she wants the ceremony (I actually liked the ceremony part - felt like it was Nestaâs own way of apologizing to Cassian and making a statement infront of the Illyrians about how loved Cassian is) but in the mean time she can offer him something else to eat till then đđđ
Nesta, Emerie, and Gwyn winning the blood rite? In what world?
I thought we were promised an Eris redemption arc? All we got is Cassian insulting him
Amren was riding a roller coaster in terms of how much I like her
Nesta didnât really need to kneel infront of her to apologize
I was looking forward to Nesta making the Illyrians fear her being an actual witch
ALSO WHY DID SHE GIVE UP HER POWER!!! WHY CANT WOMEN IN THE SJM WORLD JUST KEEP THEIR POWERS it wouldâve been so much more significant for her to learn how to wield it (also if Amren was helping her then we wouldâve had a better scene than Nesta kneeling out of nowhere)
Also Nesta and Rhys are so much alike and after Rhys saw what was in her mind, it wouldâve made a difference for him to talk to her! Maybe even offer teaching her control considering he has a lot of power too! Iâm not looking for them to be besties, I actually enjoy them calling each other on their bullshit, but an understanding wouldâve been nice.
Also Mor? Her character felt out of character
Also I really wanted a scene where Nesta braided Cassianâs hair
Cassian knowing about Lactic acid but Majda not knowing about c-sections!?!? Make it make sense
Now onto things I actually did like
Valkyrie!!!!
Chaperone Az
Nesta having her own girl friends (gives me Aelin vibes and how Rowan was happy when he saw her with Lysandra)
Cassian saying âNesâ
The lake scene was beautiful. Nesta taking accountability broke my heart because it just shows you how aware she is. Personally I related with that because awareness of ones own terrible actions is a diff level of hell
The intensity between Cassian and Nesta
And letâs be honest: the smut

a look in the mirror
âand what about you?â An eyebrow raised, red lips smirking.
I almost missed a step, thrown off by her question.
I raised my eyebrow to prompt her to elaborate.
âsqueaky clean hands you said.â The smirk turned into a smile, too innocent to be considered anything but. She didnât miss a beat with her feet.Â
To on lookers I presume we look like a couple caught in the moment. Too entrapped in each others gazes.
âunlike you, I never resort to killing to get the job done.â I stared into her eyes for a good moment, making sure she sensed the accusatory tone in my voice, before lifting my sight to the ball room around us.Â
Dancing with her was the last thing I wouldâve though Iâd be doing tonight. Indeed, coming here was a ploy to see who sheâd be talking to - accomplices. Never thought that would be me. The second her eyes landed on me, she excused herself from her company and made her way toward me. That was over an hour ago.
âeveryone has blood on their hands Mr. Alexius.â Her voice brought my gaze back to hers, then her red lips. âweâve all killed parts of ourselves to survive this. You mean to convince me it gives you no remorse to live the life you do right now?â Her eyes spoke of so many things, I couldnât read them clearly. âBecause if so, you may not be killer but sure as hell a cold hearted murdered.â
I managed to swallow whatever nerves seemed to appear in my mouth.
She was an irony. Wrapped in pink chiffon and flowers with lips painted cherry red blood. A killer who speaks of remorse.
âIâve been in this business longer than you have, so a word of advice?â She has stopped dancing and took her hands off my shoulders. My arms seemed to dangle by my sides. âGet off your God damn high horse and let go of that judgemental tone. Itâll bite you in the ass if youâre not careful.â
The last I caught of her was a wink before she spun on her heels and walked away.

a taste of the devil
Cheeks flushed, hair slightly messed, pupils dark and diluted, corset laced up again, dress slightly truffled, and lips swollen - I made my way through the crowd. The dance mustâve been over and people around were mingling. Groups of businessmen alike. Groups of gossiping ladies. And the few groups where ladies and men were sharing anecdotes. How boring.
Champagne colored walls adorned the grand ball room with portraits of former Kings and Queens, a musical orchestra was situated at one end of the room while the Kingâs throne was situated at the other, and butlers seemed to be flying across the newly waxed floors as they served champagne.
He made his way past my mother who was looking horrifically at me- possibly due to how different I looked from the state I arrived in. Two Champagne glasses in his hands.
âSheâs probably thinking Iâm ruinedâ I said, a smile on my lips as I accepted the glass from him.
âRuined or not sweetheart, I can still taste you on my tongue.â
I drank to that. From the corner of my eyes I could see him smirking as he licked his lips.

I think itâs important in the stories that we tell that we try to keep away from archetypes of saying people are good or people are bad. I think humanity is so much more nuanced than that. Virginia Woolf famously said, âI am not one and simple, but complex and many.â To me, thatâs true. (x)
