She was an infant again, swaddled in silk and bathing in the sunlight that creeped through her window, surrounded by strange voices calling her name like they'd always known it. Sirena. As if it belonged to her.

As if she belonged to them. Something that doesn't feel right.

She had no memories of the in-between. No flash of white light, no dramatic goodbye. Just the slow, quiet horror of realizing—over the years—that this was not a dream, not some long hallucination. This was her life now.” -chapter 2

“The car pulled up to the new house later that week. Big, white, and silent—like it had been waiting for us. A fountain out front, topped with a mermaid statue that gleamed in the sun. My mom clapped her hands like a child; my brothers flew out of the car like we'd landed in Disneyland.

My dad and I were slower. We shared a quiet smile, not really saying anything. He followed the chaos inside, but I stayed back.

I needed a moment.

Mom wasn't lying. There was nothing around us. Just trees and sky and that one house, half-hidden through the trees to our left. It was beautiful in an old, lived-in kind of way. I could barely make out the outline of someone standing outside it—still, almost too still.
