I don’t put the name of the ship here because it will trigger more problems.

But, PLEASE DON’T SAY THIS !

All the pairings are precious, you can only ship one pairing but don’t be mean with the other pairings and people who don’t ship yours. If you don’t understand why other people “actually ship any other pairing” please at least try to respect, or try to understand why they do !

Can you please answer me a question? Why is that when it comes to Eren & Levi, it's either, Levi tops only or there's gotta be switching. But when it comes to Eruri, automatically, right off the bat, everyone knows Levi bottoms when it comes to big, manly, handsome Erwin, Levi is the woman when it comes to Erwin. And nobody complains about 'switching' when it comes to Eruri. But it's bad to only like bottom Levi when it comes to Eren?

This ask makes a lot of assumptions that are not really true from my perspective.  Preferences as far and top and bottom are concerned are opinions, and they differ from person to person.  I think switching is good in any and all pairings, no matter what story they are in.  I personally enjoy bottom Levi in ereri more than top Levi, and though I like it when they switch, I would have no problem reading or writing a fic in which Levi bottomed and never topped.  I also take pretty big issue with the statement ‘Levi is the woman’.  Bottoming doesn’t make you the woman, if you are both men.  There is nothing inherently feminine about any sexual position between men.  Even fucking biology doesn’t ‘make you the woman’.  You know what makes you the woman?

Identifying as a woman, and nothing else.

I like my eruri with bottom Erwin.  It’s my personal preference.  There is a lot more bottom Levi in eruri, this is true.  I think it has a lot to do with size, Levi being so much smaller and that is often a trait people associate with bottoming, even though it’s sort of absurd to assume just because someone is small they automatically won’t top.  Also Erwin is his superior in canon, and that might have something to do with it as well.

I like bottom Erwin, in my eruri, and my eruriren, and eruren.  I like bottom Levi in literally every ship besides eruri.  It’s not bad to only like bottom Levi, but it is bad, in my opinion, to think ‘this character CAN’T top’ or ‘this character CAN’T bottom’ because you think it’s ‘ooc’.  Topping and bottoming is not a character aspect, nor should it be set in stone.  (even in omegaverse for alphas, wink wink nudge nudge)

Do you know how many people I’ve talked to that say they hate Erwin because of the way he’s portrayed in fanfiction? I was honestly surprized. I always thought he was a great character and then in the ereri fandom, somehow he was this monster that made Levi do what he wanted because he’s an asshole. (I guess we didn’t watch the same show friends.)

 Do you know how many fics I’ve read where Erwin is angry and cold and abusive and treats Levi like trash? Can you even begin to understand how out of character that is? If you’re an author an you say your fic contains abusive Erwin or abusive Levi and then say I try to make them all as in character as possible you clearly don’t understand their characters. 

If you dislike Erwin because of fanfiction you need to stop reading fanfiction and take a look back at the source material. You didn’t look hard enough at the character.

You don’t have to ship eruri to understand how great of a character Erwin is. I didn’t when I realized it. 

So when I say STOP MAKING ERWIN LEVI’S SHITTY EX 2K15 what I mean is STOP MAKING ERWIN OUT OF CHARACTER AND MAKING A WHOLE ‘SHIPPY FANDOM’ HATE HIM BECAUSE THEY BASE THEIR CHARACTERIZATION MORE ON OUT OF CHARACTER FANFICTION THAN THE SOURCE MATERIAL.

It’s clear that what’s happening in the eruri/ereri/erwin tags is a huge fucking mess. I get it, people want to defend their favourite character, their otp, etc. and that’s fine. But when someone writes that sort of thing and posts it with the tags, the only thing they’re looking for is drama and attention. And every one of you sending in hate or otherwise is just adding fuel to it and creating a way bigger issue to the point where people are anxious and upset to go into the tags, because all this hate is upsetting and some of it triggering. No body wants to go into these tags and feel unsafe or upset, it’s supposed to be a place where they enjoy what they love. Don’t you guys understand that ship wars destroy fandoms? That these things turn people off of the very things the love and enjoy? What is the point of it all?

You ever been warned against feeding a scavenger because once they know you’ll give them food they’ll continue to return? It’s kind of like that. You continue to fuel the drama, send this person these messages, they thrive in it and it becomes a way bigger issue blown out of proportion. You keep showing them that this sort of thing bothers you, they keep doing it because it’s precisely what they want.

So someone said something nasty and awful that you disagree with. It’s their opinion, and it may not be one you like or one you agree with but it’s theirs. Telling them to kill themselves and making fun of their appearance doesn’t make you guys any better. What they’re doing, putting their hate in the tags is wrong but they aren’t concerned with that. They did it on purpose, so they could get this very reaction out of you all.

What’s the best course of action? Leave it alone. If you don’t continue to add fuel to a fire, it eventually dies all on it’s own. You stop feeding that scavenging animal and they stop coming back for scraps. Stop sending this person hate and etc., and eventually they’ll come to realise their efforts on trying to create drama are getting them nowhere. They may continue to post their hate, but what value does it have when no one responds to it. It looks like some painful, pitiful person embarrassingly shouting out into a void and no one is listening. That’s how it should be. The fandom moves on in peace. The eruri and ereri shippers move on in peace, and everyone gets to ship their ship the way they want to without feeling guilty or ashamed or hurt or angry. That is how a fandom thrives, that is how a fandom becomes superior to others. That is how you become superior to your peers. By not jumping on that dramatic hate bandwagon and contributing to its destructiveness.

They probably defend Eren and Levi with valid points. Because attack on Titan is set in Europe, most likely Germany and the age of consent is 14. In most of Europe the ages of consent are 14-16. Attack on Titan is set in a completely different time, it's fiction, the rules could have been different. Also, please do some research on pedophilia. It would be pedophilia if eren was under 11 years old.

Actually, no. The person who made that post that I got upset about wrote that everyone has their preferences and compared shipping Ereri or Eruri to prefering pizza or cats. Which is the type of logic i’ve seen a lot of in the snk fandom lol.

But I’ll admit that calling it ‘pedophilic’ was an exaggeration (although hebephiles are defined as showing a sexual interest in 11 to 14 year olds, which is not too far off, considering that Eren in fact is 15? I got his age wrong by a year.). 

You also don’t need to lecture me on Europe and Germany, I’m well aware of the history and law of my country, thank you. Even if snk would be set in Europe, which, as far as i know, are only mere speculations right now, it wouldn’t change anything. Thing is, most people who read this work will see a 15- year- old as a child and Levi as an adult. Which brings me back to my point: Levi would be an adult looking for a relationship with a minor, which imo is very wrong. Think about it. Why would a grown-up show that kind of interest in a child if they have their own social circle? Answer: They’re looking for something they can’t get from people in their own age group. 

Adults have a kind of power that teenagers don’t have. This is something I’ve come to realize especially over the last couple of years: People will take an adult’s word over that of a child’s any time. There is a power inbalance in a relationship between an adult and a minor that will generally favour the adult (this post explains it very well).

And the way Levi and Eren’s relationship starts out confirms this: Levi literally beats the crap out of Eren on one of their first meetings. Yes, he ‘had to do it’, but there were several oppositions on how violently he went about it (also note: he does not apologize to Eren). Levi goes on to treat Eren with a certain amount of respect, but the subordinate/ superior dynamic is always there. The power and dominance Levi has over Eren and his life is blatant throughout the anime/manga and is not a foundation for a healthy relationship, even if it weren’t for their age gap.

Neither would Eren, with the little life experience he has, ever be able to understand or emotionally support a person who has been through as much as Levi has. Levi has lived a life twice as long as Eren’s and there’d always be that gap between them no matter how old Eren is. Which is why I think that Levi would be much better off with Hanji or Erwin, both of whom are in his age group, have known him for years and who are persons he respects and who respect him back. 

The part that disturbs me the most about people who ship Levi x Eren, is that they are very aware of all of these points. They know and purposefully use these things for their weird kinks. ¾ of all the fanfics/ fanart I’ve seen of this ship are dominated by sub/dom dynamics and guess what. Eren, the minor, a child, is portrayed as the submissive one. Do I need to explain any further on how completely wrong and fucked up this is? How completely disrespectful it is towards people who are survivors of childhood abuse and molestation??

This got very long and tbh it’s a topic that i’m tired of discussing. I left the snk fandom exactly because of things like these. People normalize these sort of things and that’s not okay. There is nothing normal or healthy about a man twice as old giving a minor that kind of attention, stop saying otherwise.

I don’t get ship hate.

Like, I have a lot of ships that annoy me, make me groan every time I see them on-screen or on my dash, there are even ships that gross me out but you wanna know what I do? I scroll past them. 

If it seriously bothers me I blacklist them so I can forget they exist. Download Tumblr Savior blacklist the ship tag and all variations of it and move along, don’t go harassing people, trashing the fanart and fanfics they put hours into just because they like something you don’t. 

Ships make us happy, I know yours make you happy, so don’t ruin someone else’s happiness just because you think person X belongs with person Y or that person Z is -insert sexuality- / -insert romantic orientation- while someone else doesn’t. Not everyone is going to agree with you, just like you’re not going to agree with everyone.

Ship and let ship, guys.

Okay, so I have a question (no idea if you're the right person for this but one can try). Why is ere/ri the main ship of this fandom? I don't mean that in a hateful way, I can see the appeal of this ship and it's a fun ship for some parts for me, too. I simply don't get why it's the MAIN ship since there are so many ships with way more canon material? When I first watched SnK I thought eremika or eremin would be the main? Or even erejean make more sense to me (*cough* or eruri), so why ere/ri?

Hi, thank you for being polite on this one, I really appreciate it, especially when I prefer not to talk about the ship. I always regard ship as personal preference and although there are things that I don’t agree with ere/ri especially on the age difference, just like you I can understand the appeal of the ship.

Just my own views because I have been living in fandom world not just in SNK, often times the most popular ship in a series consists of the most popular character and the main character. I don’t want to sabotage any ship but just for example is: Kira/L, Se/ba/ci/el, Sasu/Naru, etc. The dynamic can be due to two most appealing character in the series and merchandise team will always provide their merchandise for sure, which will lead the fans to think that these 2 characters are always together, which might not be the case in the series.

As for SNK, when the series get popularised further after the anime started to air, Levi’s anime character design is more like a bishonen compared to the manga style and it is unlikely for audience to guess his age is above 30. Further down to Levi & Eren dynamic where Levi is being sassy and Eren who look up to him and often scared of him sometimes, some people might find the dynamic of their interaction is appealing. Some were attracted to the scene where Levi beat up Eren and after that Levi feel sorry about it. A ship can appear from some random interaction, it’s really a wonder sometimes, not only from Eren & Levi but many other pairing as well. Shipping is mainly for fans’ fun but it can get worse when people start to forget the real character interaction and influenced heavily by the fanworks.

In the beginning of the series, Erwin didn’t get much of screen time and of course it affect the audiences’ view on him [greatest example is my own sister, she asked me to read SNK, even after reading ch 59, she asked me why I like Erwin when he’s not even a main character, I gave her a long talk about Erwin after that.] So when SNK just aired, many fans are more attracted to Levi & Eren pair and there have been quite a number of fanworks before Erwin & Levi start to gain more popularity. Number of fanworks also affect the fandom’s attraction and some people who are not following the series got to know SNK from the fanwork they often encounter. This not only work for this pairing but for many other pairing from different series. Of course for those who are not familiar with the series, they can be attracted just from character design.

As someone who follow the manga, I won’t deny that there is bond between Levi and Eren, but I just don’t view it as romantic bond. It’s more like senior and junior interaction and I think their bond is significant for the story development. Levi is someone who has experienced a lot in SC, giving Eren advice on how to lead his life based on his own decision. They are living in cruel world and in order to defeat the enemy, the cadets need to learn a lot from the veterans but of course they need to grew up based on their own capabilities & beliefs. Like Armin who learns a lot from Erwin, I think Eren and Levi’s interaction is important for Eren to grow up even further. 

I agree with you when I just started to read the series, I always thought Ere/Mika or Ere/Min will be canon. At the moment I rather see them as inseparable, Eren, Mikasa & Armin are equally important.

As for Erwin and Levi’s close bond have been shown many times and it is quite easy for fans to romanticise it. Shipping goggles aside, it is really funny to see in these recent chapters Levi always throw sassy remark toward Erwin and I think that is what Isayama want to convey to the audience on their close bond. Maybe due to the heavy storyline, it’s quite difficult to see the light side of characters’ interaction with each other. I think what attracted to me most about Eru/ri is Levi’s devotion to Erwin and Erwin’s trust in Levi to accomplish difficult mission. It can be just platonic relationship and the fandom can have fun on how they want to interpret their relationship, but again it is always good to always refer back to the canon interaction.

Shipping fandom is lawless and there is no rule to say that even though one pairing is canon, you are not allowed to ship one of them with other. It is sad but truth. Like for example even Sasuke is married with Sakura, there are still Sasu/Naru fanwork or Edward & Bella is married but Jacob/Bella fans will still love the pairing. Imho, shipping war is pointless and only will result people leaving the our own fandom, no matter how much I dislike to see other pairing of Erwin & Levi aside from Eru/ri, there’s no point calling out the other fandom and start a fight, it will just bring more hatred. At the moment there is a lot of things that eru/ri fandom troubled with especially on AO3 tags and this has been going on for idk when, or someone posting hate posts on eru/ri tags. This would also goes to eru/ri fan too, it would be great if we can avoid to start a war with the other side. We can voice out our argument about not tagging a hate post about the pair on the pairing tags or tagging a story as eru/ri or other pair when in fact they are not the main pairing, it’s like knocking to someone’s door just to insult the family.

funny how that ereri fan said ereri is not pedophilia b'cos SNK is "based in the 800's". How come she's sure SNK follows the calendar that we're following irl? For all we know, SNK has its own calendar (i think SNK irl happened around the 1800s). Now in terms of the pedophilia thing itself, can't say if a sexual relationship between a 15 y/o kid and a 30+ y/o man is treated as pedophilic within the SNK universe (diff culture). People make a big deal over Eren being 15 while Levi is in his 30’s and calling it pedophilia but it really isn’t. The manga/anime is based in the 800’s. 800’s people! In the 1200’s, hundreds and hundreds of years after the manga is set, the age of consent was 12 years old in most places. Even now in 2016 in Germany, where the manga is also based, the age of consent is only 14. Do you really think people in the 800’s care about that age difference when people in the 1200’s didn’t?
