Grating mid range synths, hats a la trap and heavy side-chain on the low end juxtaposed with pitch shifted vocal stylings. A delicate amalgam of dissonant elements and an antidote to mainstream EDM. Soulful, evocative and esoteric to the core.

Solo1's debut EP for shlunk eta mid Jan 2014, promo to follow shortly

The land and the sea is the 4 track debut release for Solo1 on Shlunk Records. Written in London and Portugal across the dying days of Summer 2013 this debut for Shlunk sees Solo1 deliver another set of infected house songs and broken dub messages that fits in perfectly with our label aesthetic. Circling the dance floor and fitting nicely with the current fucked up house vox pop, slow beats (all favouring the wrong side of 100 bpm) are under painted with blurred sub bass and overpainted with severely damaged synths and static interference. With an approach to beat making that can only be described as subterranean, Solo1 uses a variety of hardware, favouring cassette and 4 track degeneration over off the peg DAW solutions. With a luddite view of modern recording technology and production, songs are crafted on old handheld cassette recorders then built up like paintings over a number of months. Influenced strongly by the surroundings they were made in and often including vocals recorded straight into a mobile on the Underground or the wilds of South West England, Solo1 will then add in the top painting (synth, found vocals, radio static and screwed melodies). Constantly refining and chopping into tracks will only then deliver the final song like an image emerging out of a static field. We like this at Shlunk a lot.

Solo1 has been cutting a name out for himself as a producer on the peripheral of the dance floor for the last few years working pretty much in isolation. Little is known of previous outputs but there have been a number of CDR's in circulation for some time that highlight his painterly approach to sound making and capture nicely how broken 4 track recorders, old tapes and field recordings (jacked on mobile phones) can be put to use. Using a set up that favours hardware Solo1 continues to drive forwards his blurred, minor key, bass explorations on a wave of painterly sunshine synth and static. The layers and skeins of sounds culled from travels fit together and are underpinned by snippets of jungle footwork and damaged house rhythms. Memory rave for those who don't want to remember.

Multi-genre accepted, bastard-hybrids preferred. Aesthetic sensitivity and subtlety preferred over bass in your face. If you feel your sound doesn’t fit comfortably into any specific genre but is bass heavy, then this could be the place for you. Here we’ve an eye on what’s happening on the fringes, and what’s yet to come. If you are an artist who is comfortable with taking a little direction and/or criticism, then there might even be a release in it for you, plus the exposure that leads to a global audience.
