I'm a shitlib right, I believe in stuff like fairness and equity and equality and compromise and it makes everyone really mad at me no matter what so my thing today is:
We don't have to be anti-car to improve public transportation, and having an anti-car attitude pretty much guarantees that you won't win.
In your middle and highschool english classes you probably learned over and over how to write an argumentative essay and you were probably told that an effective essay considers, includes, and defeats opposing arguments -- then you went on social media and promptly forgot that entire concept and probably dont know why it was taught in the first place but it's because it's not good enough to just yell about something you want. Yell until you're blue in the face, it won't matter unless you can convince others to support your cause.
So let's say your cause is that of improving public transportation (In terms of what? Always be specific. Let's say it's expanding infrastructure options.), how do you argue for it? If it's just yelling Cars Bad over and over, not only are you not going to convince the suits to give you money, you may sabotage your own movement's future by being obnoxious and ignorant. It's way easier and more effective to convince people to like the thing you like than to dislike the thing they already like or rely on. Framing really really matters, so here's what I would do: Lead with facts, guide to goal, soothe with compromise.
Facts: In spite of dramatic improvements in safety technology and infrastructure and driver attitudes, motor vehicles take the lives of more than 40,000 people per year in the United States, a number which has remained consistent on average for the last 50 years [source]. Motor vehicle accidents are the 3rd largest cause of accidental death in the United States [source]. Motor vehicles contribute to air pollution which is known to be damaging to human health in various and even life-threatening ways, including toward unborn children [source]. Furthermore, driving is an unpleasant experience for many, with traffic being such a prevalent and contstant frustration as to be reduced to a joke or excuse which requires no explanation [example][example]. Fear of driving is also common [source], and scared drivers are dangerous drivers [source].
Goal: Therefore it is in everyone's best interest to prioritize alternatives. Fewer vehicles on the roads will decrease related injuries and fatalities, and giving everyone options to avoid driving without increasing traffic, such as via bus, train, or tram, will reduce overall frustration experienced by travellers.
Soothing: Driving is fun [example]. Trains and trams and busses are driven by other people for you, and I don't expect 24-hour access to happen any time soon, and in any event, I don't expect them to be able to access literally everything a car can all the time, especially in rural areas. Making cars obsolete will probably never happen, and it doesn't really solve any problems. What we need is just the option to choose something else at least in urban areas, more of the time.
Double down on the goal: We can achieve this by taking the funding from the ICE budget on a national level and/or the police budget at a state level, since the point is to improve everyone's lives.
See? Not that hard to write something halfway decent in only an hour or two. Now please go forth and write better essays.
#cars#driving#essay#public transportation#motor vehicles#i've got school flashbacks from reading it but that means you've done a pretty good job of exploring the topics luv. congrats vwv=
