Sapphire Weapon and Shin Gojira with their destructive energy breath beams ✨ Parallels, anyone?
In Japan the ocean is still a prominent SF topos and Otherness and the threat has often tended to come from the Seas. This is related to geopolitical conditions surrounding WW2 and the role of the ocean for Japan overall.
I love to see all this intertextuality of motifs in Japanese scifi! 😍

”I will not end. Nor will I have you end.”
Just a tiny observation about the grammatical nuances behind the original Japanese lines of ”Ore wa kietakunai. Omae wo keshitaku wa nai.”
”Ore wa kietakunai” = ”I don’t want to disappear.”
Pretty simple, nothing more there. I want to continue existing.
However, when talking about what he does or doesn’t want to do to Cloud, Sephiroth uses a different grammatical structure: ”Omae o keshitaku WA nai”.
And this here is a grammatical explanation, not a lore analysis. What he says to Cloud is literally: ”I don’t want to erase you (but I [might reluctantly] have to do so regardless)”.
The ”wa” in between is the important thing that differentiates the ”want” between himself/Cloud.
Somehow that always hooks my belly just so. And ”kieru” to me sounds a lot like disappearing completely, not only death - which isn’t ”erasure” in the strict sense of the word. Maybe he’s referring to the last threads of his consciousness within the LS, I don’t know. 🤷♀️
But the point is, what he’s saying is more nuanced than merely proclaiming that Cloud shall not end. That there is a possibility that unless Cloud joins him, he’ll have to destroy him. Or erase him. But also that this would be a regrettable thing so they need to defy destiny together instead.
So disapperance/erasure: Sephiroth doesn’t want that for himself nor Cloud. However, in Rebirth final battle he tells Aerith to ”sassato kiero” = ”disappear quickly [without wasting my time]”.
It’s just a word, really, but when juxtaposed against the EoC scene, using ”kieru” is interesting. He really wants Aerith to just fuck off already, to stop existing, if seen in the light of himself not wanting to stop existing (”kietakunai”).
So, just a few linguistic observations that make all the connotations pretty interesting.

Sephiroth living every PhD student’s worst nightmare: doubting their whole existence while holed up in a basement library for days with an endless pile of books and notes that make little sense, and no social life.

Playing with the calamity mask design. Liked the idea of some of the robes he wears being the ones he was stabbed a hundred times with (logically I know they'd be in tatters and practically unwearable. but shhh it goes well for the calamity aesthetic)
