For once, I feel like writing a couple of lines. It’s been a while, since the inspration strolled through the lands of my mind. They used to laugh with a subtle sarcastic nuance, when I was sitting around, looking up. It doesn’t matter what... the sky, the ceiling... They used to say “What are you doing? Waiting for the inspiration?”... Yes... I suppose... They made it sound like a bad thing, they demonized that pause, in which I waited for connection. They weren’t bad, not at all. They were just indocrinated. Who said that sitting around and looking up is doing nothing? Isn’t that maybe we live in a world that wants our creative, focused energy concentrated on some sort of plan, that isn’t OUR plan. So, if you sit around procrastinating, don’t beat yourself up. You’re a perfect system, meant to self regulate. If you “must” do something, but you can’t, your emotions are trying to communicate with your conscious mind... the more one listens, the closer one gets to the truth. And the truth will not reveal itself to us through the “facts” on the outside, it wil be a whisper reaching our minds from inside. Therefore, waiting in silence and looking up, isn’t bad. It’s simply a space for tuning in... to yourself.

Per una volta, desidero scrivere un paio di righe. È trascorso molto tempo, dall’ultima volta in cui l’ispirazione ha passeggiato attraverso le valli della mia mente. Ridevano con una sottile nuance di sarcasmo, quando stavo in ozio, guardando in su. Non importa cosa guardassi... il cielo, il soffitto... Mi dicevano “Cosa fai? Aspetti l’ispirazione?”... Si... suppongo... Lo facevano sembrare una brutta cosa, demonizzavano quella pausa, durante la quale cercavo di riconnettere. Non erano cattivi, non lo erano affatto. Erano solo indottrinati. Chi ha detto che starsene seduti in ozio, guardando in su, significa non far nulla? Non sarà forse che viviamo in un mondo che vuole la nostra energia creativa concentrata su qualche piano, che non è il NOSTRO piano. Dunque, se te ne stai seduto a procrastinare, non ti maltrattare. Sei un sistema perfetto, fatto per regolarsi da solo. Se “devi” fare qualcosa, ma non te la senti, le tue emozioni tantano di comunicare qualcosa alla tua mente conscia... più uno si ascolta, più questi si avvicina alla verità. E la verità non si rivelerà a noi tramite i “fatti” esterni, sarà un sussurro che ci raggiungerà da dentro di noi. Perciò, attendere in silenzio e guardare in alto, non è una cosa brutta. È solo uno spazio in cui ci sintonizziamo... con noi stessi.

Che cos’è l’Intelligenza Emotiva? (Non ci serve l’Intelligenza Artificiale, abbiamo bisogno della NOSTRA Intelligenza Emotiva) // What is Emotional Intelligence? (We don’t need AI, we need OUR OWN EI)

L'intelligenza emotiva è la qualità che ci consente di affrontare con pazienza, intuizione e immaginazione i molti problemi che affrontiamo nella relazione affettiva con noi stessi e con gli altri. Il termine può sembrare strano. Siamo abituati a riferirci all'intelligenza proprio come a una qualità generale, senza scegliere una particolare varietà che una persona potrebbe possedere - e quindi non tendiamo ad evidenziare il valore di un tipo distintivo di intelligenza che attualmente non gode del prestigio che dovrebbe. Ogni tipo d’intelligenza segnala la capacità di navigare bene intorno ad una particolare serie di sfide: matematica, linguistica, tecnica, commerciale ... Quando diciamo che qualcuno è intelligente, ma aggiungiamo che hanno rovinato la loro vita personale; o che hanno acquisito una fortuna, ma sono irrequieti e tristi; o che sono potenti, ma intolleranti e privi di fantasia, stiamo indicando un deficit in ciò che merita di essere chiamato Intelligenza Emotiva. Nella vita sociale, possiamo percepire la presenza di un valore emotivo in un’abilità di riconoscere gli stati d’animo altrui e in una capacità di cogliere che ciò che le persone dimostrano spesso non corrisponde con ciò che veramente sentono sotto la superficie. L'intelligenza emotiva riconosce il ruolo dell'interpretazione e sa che, ad esempio, uno scatto d’ira potrebbe essere una richiesta mascherata d’aiuto, o che uno sproloquio politico potrebbe essere provocato dalla fame, o che nascosto in una forte gelosia ci può essere un dolore, o trauma, che è stato misconosciuto e ripudiato, diventando subconscio. In relazione a noi stessi, l'intelligenza emotiva si manifesta in parte nello scetticismo attorno alle nostre emozioni, in particolare quelle d’amore, desiderio, rabbia, invidia, ansia e ambizione professionale. L’individuo emozionalmente intelligente rifiuta di fidarsi solo dei primi impulsi o della saggezza intrinseca dei propri sentimenti. N.B. Emozioni e Sentimenti NON sono la stessa cosa. Questa differenziazione sarà disponibile in uno dei prossimi post di Hybridorbital. Il sapere che l'odio può nascondere amore, che la rabbia può essere una copertura per la tristezza e che siamo inclini a enormi inesattezze rispetto a ciò che desideriamo e ciò che cerchiamo. L'intelligenza emotiva è anche ciò che distingue coloro che si sentono umiliati dal fallimento da quelli che sanno salutare i problemi dell'esistenza con una resilienza malinconica e in alcuni punti cupamente umoristica. L'intelligente emotivo apprezza il ruolo del pessimismo ben gestito nell'economia generale di una buona vita. L'intelligenza emotiva non è un talento innato. È sempre il risultato dell'educazione, in particolare dell'educazione su come interpretare noi stessi, da dove nascono i sentimenti; in che modo la nostra infanzia ci ha  influenzati e come possiamo meglio navigare al meglio le nostre paure e desideri. In una società ideale, si insegnerebbe sistematicamente l'Intelligenza Emotiva fin dalla più giovane età, prima che possiamo avere l'opportunità di fare troppi “errori”. N.B. Il concetto di che cosa sia effettivamente un errore è un tema che sarà ampiamente trattato in un post futuro di Hybridorbital. È perché - fino ad ora - non abbiamo preso abbastanza seriamente l'educazione emotiva che la nostra specie è diventata sempre più esperta a livello tecnico, ma ha mantenuto lo sviluppo della propria saggezza ad un livello per lo più infantile - con risultati catastrofici. Al momento presente possiamo definirci “scimmie evolute con a disposizione armi nucleari”. Sembra che il destino della civiltà ora dipenda dalla nostra capacità di padroneggiare i meccanismi dell'educazione emotiva prima che sia troppo tardi. Un'educazione emotiva va ben oltre l'educazione formale così come l'abbiamo concepita finora. Sebbene dovrebbe idealmente includere corsi specializzati in ogni anno di scuola o college, l'Educazione Emozional-Sentimental-Emotiva è qualcosa di più di quanto possa semplicemente svolgersi in aule per mano di insegnanti, arrestandosi all’età di ventun anni. Il veicolo centrale per il trasferimento dell'intelligenza emotiva è la cultura, dal suo livello più alto a quello più popolare. La cultura è il campo che può fucinare rituali e promuovere costantemente l'assorbimento della saggezza. Le "lezioni" di cultura potrebbero essere inserite in una tragedia o in una serie TV, una canzone pop o un romanzo, un'opera di architettura o un film di YouTube. Possiamo immaginare l'intero apparato della cultura come un sottile meccanismo progettato per indicarci una maggiore intelligenza emotiva. Non progrediremo mai come specie e diventeremo minacce sempre più grandi per noi stessi, tecnologicamente armate, fino a quando non avremo accettato le sfide e le opportunità di ciò che comporta educare adeguatamente noi stessi nell'intelligenza emotiva. La nostra intelligenza tecnica è eccezionale, ci ha portato a domare la natura e conquistare questo pianeta. Ma un futuro più saggio e più sano per la razza deve dipendere dalla capacità di padroneggiare, e quindi vicendevolmente insegnarci gli uni con gli altri, i rudimenti dell'intelligenza emotiva. Finché c'è ancora tempo.

What is Emotional Intelligence? (We don’t need AI, we need OUR OWN EI)

Emotional intelligence is the quality that enables us to confront with patience, insight and imagination the many problems that we face in our affective relationship with ourselves and with others. The term may sound odd. We are used to referring to intelligence just as a general quality, without unpicking a particular variety a person might possess - and therefore we do not tend to highlight the value of a distinctive sort of intelligence which currently does not enjoy the prestige it should. Every sort of intelligence signals an ability to navigate well around a particular set of challenges: mathematical, linguistic, technical, commercial… When we say that someone is clever, but add that they have made a mess of their personal lives; or that they have acquired a fortune, but are restless and sad or that they are powerful, but intolerant and unimaginative, we are pointing to a deficit in what deserves to be called Emotional Intelligence. In social life, we can feel the presence of Emotional Intelligence in a sensitivity to the moods of others and in a readiness to grasp the surprising things that may be going on for other people beneath the surface. Emotional Intelligence recognises a role for interpretation and knows that, for example, a fiery outburst might be a disguised plea for help, or that a long political rant may be provoked by hunger, or that concealed within a forceful jolliness may be a sorrow that has been sentimentally disavowed. In relation to ourselves, Emotional Intelligence shows up in the scepticism around our emotion, especially those of love, desire, anger, envy, anxiety and professional ambition. The Emotionally Intelligent mostly refuses to simply trust their first impulses, or the inherent wisdom of their feelings*. The know that hatred may be hiding a desperate need for love, that anger may be a cover for sadness and that we are prone to huge and costly inaccuracies about whom we desire and what we seek. Emotional Intelligence is also what distinguishes those who are easily crushed by failure from those who know how to greet the troubles of existence with a melancholy and, at parts, darkly humorous resilience. The Emotional Intelligent appreciates the role of well-handled pessimism within the overall economy of a good life. Emotional Intelligence isn’t an inborn talent. It's always the result of education, specifically education in how to interpret ourselves, where emotions arise from, how our childhood influences us and how we might best navigate our fears and wishes. In an ideal society, it would be routined to be taught Emotional Intelligence from the youngest age, before we had had the opportunity to make too many mistakes**. It is because we have - until now - not taken emotional education seriously enough that our species has grown ever more technically adept while retaining the level of wisdom of our earliest days; with catastrophic results. We are now evolved monkeys with nuclear weapons. It appears that the fate of civilisation now depends on our capacity to master the mechanisms of Emotional Education before it is too late. An Emotional Education extends far beyond formal education as we have conceived of it to date. Though it should ideally include specialised courses in every year of school or college, Emotional Education is more than something that should just take place in classrooms at the hands of teachers and come to halt around the age of twenty-one. The central vehicle for the transfer of Emotional Intelligence is culture, from its highest to its most popular level. Culture is the field that can create rituals and consistently promote the absorption of wisdom. The “lessons” of culture might be embedded in a tragedy or a TV series, a pop song or a novel, a work of architecture or a YouTube film. We can envisage the entire apparatus of culture as a subtle mechanism designed to point us towards greater emotional intelligence. We will never progress as a species, and will indeed grow into ever greater technologically-armed menaces to ourselves, until we have accepted the challenges and opportunities of properly educating ourselves in Emotional Intelligence. Our Technical Intelligence is great of course, it has led us to tame nature and conquer this planet. But a wiser, saner future for the race must depend on a capacity to master and then seductively teach one another the rudiments of Emotional Intelligence while there is still time.

*Emotions and feelings are NOT the same thing. This differentiation will be soon available in post by Hybridorbital. ** The definition of what can be understood as a “mistake” will be extensively argued in a future post by Hybridhorbital.
