It always amazes me a bit how little otherwise well educated people know about non-western cultures/histories.

Consider what “mothering” someone means. Now consider what “fathering” someone means. Interesting

Ok, I'm convinced. "Cognition" is a way better translation of "Erkenntnis" than "knowledge", if only because it clearly marks the distinction between "Erkenntnis" and "Wissen". (Also, I kinda think it might be the case that an entire kind of reading of the regulative use of the ideas of reason derives its plausibility from Norman Kemp Smith's, in this respect, bad translation.)

I give way fewer shits about whether you use "people of color", "racial minorities" or "nonwhite people" than whether you appear to have a weirdly disproportionate level of resistance to being asked to use a particular set of terminology because it's considered more respectful.

If the things you say about free speech make it look like 4chan is the ideal actualization of your conception of free speech, your conception of free speech is unattractive and not worth defending.

I have a contrarian streak a mile wide, and people who keep prattling on about free speech, murder is bad, basically stuff that everyone who they could actually be talking to agree with make me want to argue against those things (hey, that means they'll actually have an interlocutor). I restrain myself because I can't actually reflectively endorse the claim that free speech is not valuable or that murder is justifiable, but man am I tempted.
