Extinction, Netflix
😑 I can't wait for this movie to be over. Although the premise is good ( just like it was for Titan ) this movie is a bore. The effects are super shitty. It feels like it's borderline video game effects... in a bad way.
Just look at it, you'll understand what I mean. Or don't...
Despite a good cast. * sigh * sad.

Hereditary, Ari Aster, 2018, run time : 2h07
+++++
I la la la la loved it! Now that that's out of the way lemme be more down to earth and let us break this movie down cherie... Let's start with the acting, the cast is clearly talented so it would be hard to have misses here... It was the first time I saw Millie Shapiro on screen though but... she is excellent. She's creepy but cute bc she brings this infant like manor to the character much needed to confuse the shit out of how you are feeling about Charlie. This is her first film role but this girl has been in the bizz since she was 3 I think. She's been doing Broadway since 10 ( Correct me if I am wrong good people of the internet. ) Toni Colette... She always blows my mind no matter what she is in. She rarely seems to pick a movie that doesn't interest me. She reaches you once again through this performance. You cannot help to feel uncomfortable, uneasy and sympathetic to what is happening to Annie ( and same goes for all the other characters but I don't wanna spoil ) She's so good. You can tell that she's really living each moment and it is beautiful to watch. Gabriel Byrne is also a great actor and I was glad to see him on the big screen. It had been a while. Regarding his character I think he nailed it. He's confused most of the time and you really get the feeling Steve is doing his best at dealing with these impossible situations. He feels like an outsider but on the good side. You'll understand when you see. And last but not least ( I kept my favorite for last ) Alex Wolff! He's certainly found a new fan in me. I saw him in " My friend Dahmer " in which he was good but then he blew my fucking mind in just 1 scene. The car scene. His reaction. My god it crawled under my skin. I was sitting there thinking : WOAH this guy has got skillz. I don't know how many takes it took but it paid off. And then he continued through the film with excellence. Each scene you can tell that he's honestly going there!
Ouf. I'm out of breath just writing about it.
Image: The opening sequence was clever. I loved it. Love the colors of the shots. Really adds to the creepyness of the film. The shots are nice. I like some of the transitioning shots that really add to the story and how you are feeling while watching it.
The score : Reminds me of something from the 80's or earlier. Good ol horror movie feel but with much better quality and recent type of eerieness. The song at the end... 😶
The writing : Haleluja! Nobody is saying pointless things or unrealistic gibberish. Words have been chosen carefully and carried by a beautifully planned storyline. They don't over sell it. They don't jab so much in your brain that you can't think for yourself. Has some clues here and there, specially if you are a horror film buff you'll recognize notes of a bouquet of Rosemary ( 's baby ) and the Omen.
It's so good! I can tell that the people involved are passionate, love horror films and cared to deliver!

TOMB RAIDER, Roar Uthaug, 2018

+ + + + +
I can't see where to take a tomb off here. It has a good cast, I like this tomb raider better. Script and story is good. Sexy wrestler in the beggining. Loved to know the origins of the adventurer and that she made mistakes at times. Made me wanna be an adventurer.
Sure a lot of scenes are exagerated and cgi makes moves humanly impossible possimpable but didn't bother me that much.
I'm gonna buy it.

He fought back

Ended well.
Not.
So. Euh hum. Good acting, nice little shots. I actually liked it. I know it doesn't sound like it but I like the mystery element. We got no clue of the origins of these people and I guess that is one of the reasons it seems different then a lot of what we are seeing these days. Not going to watch it again but I didn't feel cheated out of my time.
Let's give this a + + 1/ 2 tombstone cause I'm feeling in a giving mood!

Alright. I am watching " The strangers : they prey at night "
*spoiler alert *
Okay, so we're about 40 mins in the movie right now and so far, we got 4 people : Mom, Dad, Son and Daughter. They are on a trailer park resort (?) With bungalows, the kids find one with dead bodies and then they run off, meet the parents half way and then of course, the dad and son go back to investigate while the mom and daughter go back to the cabin to cry and hug each other. Then, like the helpless creatures that they are they don't even go at the girl with the knife... they go where? Well the bathroom of course. So they lock the door and all but it gets kicked in and the mother in this scene is just fucking useless. She just accepts shes gonna die. She'd have time to at least turn around and punch the bitch! No. I don't understand, nobody even tries to fight these fuckers!
Now the other parent is dead. Both of em sacrificed to save their kids... but don't show em how to fight. Please.
Also, is there a channel playing classic 80's song all the time? That's cool.
All that being said, I love mysteries but I really hope to have some answers this time around. Before the movie ends I wanna know at least one of these : what's with the religious stuff? Who's Tabetha? Why? Who?
I'll post back later with results and my overall review notes.

Needs no introduction, by pretty awesome people, 2018
Okay, so I know I said I'd post a review last night but I actually needed to get over the excitement the movie caused. You see, I didn't want this review to be " omgggg it was so good! 😲 Best movie ever man! " I wanted to say something intelligent so here goes...
I'M GONNA TRY NOT TO SPOIL ANYTHING.
First off let's talk about the music. I feel like they went for a " guardians of the galaxy " type of score. It works well these days. ( lets not abuse it people... ) There's a beautiful mtv unplugged version of " take on me " by A-ha that I keep listening to today. A gem.
The costumes where pretty awesome. Simple but believable to a certain extent. I mean there's no one fighting in a G string or in a short short skirt. Kudos.
The actors did great character work. It's not just Ryan Reynolds that's royal here. Morena Baccarin, she's so " Vanessa " I just feel like she's a real person. You know when the actor dissapear into the character?
The characters are layered. So well written and played. Every actor. Seriously. Not gonna name em all but they are all GOOD. Nothing bad to say there. Mr Reynolds looks like an all around fun guy to work with by the way.
This movie is smart in many ways. It knows it's a movie and it's not trying to sell you something else. The fourth wall is broken at times but it doesn't take away anything about the serious moments nor the sad ones. Every scene is interesting. Nothing is useless ( the same can't be said for other movies ) it's fast paced but not to a point where you'd feel rushed.
It's hilarious. Wait until you see the opening credits and once the movie ends keep your butt on the chair because um the fun is not over. The scenes at the end are gold. Made me laugh so hard.
This movie doesn't take itself too seriously while exceeding expectations. Brilliant. Genius. Giving me hope for smarter better films and daamn proud to be canadian.

The Book of Henry
Another little review, spoiler alerts...
🤔 I don't really understand why everyone seems to be bashing this gem. I mean, of course there are little things like : The fact that Henry dies midway through the film, some pretty predictable moments, a practically useless love story they seem to try to push in between the dr. and the mom ( it's as if they realized half way through " oh fuck, we forgot to make a love story in the movie. " because GOD FORBID the story could be told without... * losing my shit so am not getting into this right now * ) and a bit of a so so role for Christina. It's not that she can't act, it's cause they just didn't give her any lines. It's pretty insulting to her character I find.
All that aside, it's quite interesting to watch. The actors are great and I love the characters. I thought the script was well done and the execution was 👌 some gorgeous shots where done. Cute set design and I just relate to the mom somehow. It's a film I don't regret watching at all. Some sad moments but it's not all about that kid dying. It reminded me, I don't know why exactly, of " The Odd Life Of Timothy Green" which I loved.
Make your own opinion because I think most critics were a little hard on this one. Perhaps they had expectations that were not met?

Fenty foundation 🤤
I am not one to wear much makeup. Especially foundation because I have a hard time with the feeling it leaves on my face. I have tried many brands throuout the years and this one has changed my mind about foundation. Period. This morning I had an important business meeting and wanted to get my makeup done ( by my daughter cause she is the expert ) . A month ago I had asked the makeup guy at Sephora's for help picking the right color for my skin to get a sample of Fenty foundation to try it. He gave me the 120. Now, that is one of the biggest issues for me. Getting the right color because whenever I go in other brands I always seem to be between colors. Fenty however, has my type of Ivory. YAY! I have to say that I had none of the yukky feelings you get after wearing a foundation all day at the end it feels like crass... this one was still comfortable. Even more... I still didn't feel it. It's so light but has great coverage. Don't need to use a lot. It holds great all through the day. I sweated but it didn't "melt" outta my face.
Fenty is where Imma put my money!
Oh and P.S. I also bought the STUNNA lip paint that I like to pair with Melted Gold from Too Faced. It gives a goddess lip look. I love it so much!

A Quiet Place, 2018, John Krisinski
+ + + + +
It's brilliant! I knew this would be interesting. I love how the movie made me feel. The details are well thought of and the sounds that happen in the movie are well placed. I found myself careful not to make any sounds during the screening. That's what it does. You are absorbed by the movie and the atmosphere it creates. I don't know if it was an intentional effect but it really helps to suck you in. Making every little sound scarier and the situations feel deeper. The "monsters" are beautifully done and mysterious enough. I loved it. I think it's genius. The actors omg... the actors have amazing chemistry. I wish I had made this movie and aspire to nail something as well in the future! 🍻

Reviewing last few movies I saw
1. Confession of murder by Jeong Byeong-Gil, 1h59, Korean

+ + + + + ( These are 5 tombstone ... making that better in the futur ;) )
Good storyline. Good screenwriting for sure. The main characters and supporting characters are explored enough and they make it interesting to watch. The movie keeps some mysteries by reveiling certain things not too early. It felt like this movie didn’t treat me like an idiot. It knew I would get it even if there wasn’t an “insert’ or “sequence” early on in the film. The cinematics are satisfying ( even if some parts have been clearly made with a lesser quality of visual effects ) it holds up. Sometimes you laugh, sometimes you get angry at the overly cocky vilain played by Shi-hoo park ( Who is 34 in this movie and looks like he’s just turned 19... Still does today at 40 but anyways... moving on ) and other parts you feel sad. This movie relies on it’s story rather than some gory visuals. If you’re looking for a slasher this might dissapoint you but if you want something similar ( but in a lighter version ) to Sympathy for lady vengeance, you might enjoy!
2. Lake Bodom by Taneli Mustonen, 1h25 English-Finish

+ + + 1/2
Nice coloring, some beautiful shots. I enjoyed the story and the slashing was satisfying. I am only being severe with this one because I expected something from the last 25 minutes and I didn’t get it. Kind of like having a good masturbation session and being interrupted when you’re just about to climax. Maybe if they had 10 more minutes to add in between this “ moment “ and the ending ( You’ll get it when you watch ) Do watch though. Give it a try and let me know if you came or not. No... Just kidding. Don’t tell me :P
3. The last will and testament of Rosalind Leigh by Rodrigo Gudiño, too long, english

+
Oh the good intentions this movie had. I think it had a good premise but boy does it let you down. I just kept it going for 2 reasons. I wanted to watch the whole thing so that I can make an honest review... and I was too lazy to get up and turn it off. I really wanted to like this one. It being from one of the founders of Rue Morgue magazine and all. I applauded the decor of the gothic home and some of the camera tricks where nice but in the end, it was filled with useless scenes that seem to go on forever. We linger much too long on closed doors in one of the first scenes. It was as though something would happen but nothing did. In fact, this pretty much describes the movie. My daughter fell asleep. She said “ did they make this movie so we’d fall asleep? “ She made me notice how each time he talks to his girlfriend (?) on the phone it sounds like she’s doing ASMRs and so does the person at the door... Very smooth. Oh the voice on the tape though... I would really LOVE for him to tell me a bedtime story. BEAUTIFUL voice. A movie that focuses on only one character playing alone really needs to up it’s game. It needs to work twice as hard to get us interested in this guy... ( there are a few appearences by other charcters that we either know nothing about or don’t give a rat’s ass about... ) This movie fails. IMHO.
Conclusion¨
I make movies too and I am pretty sure they have problems. Some might even suck. It’s impossible to like everything or please everyone. I try to talk about both the positive and negative aspect, in my opinion, of these films. Let’s all continue to make some because, for sure, someone, somewhere will love them!
