How to survive the holidays with fatphobic friends and family

When someone says, “you look great, have you lost weight?”

NICE: No — I choose to focus on other things than weight. Good to see you, though!

SPICE: Nope! Still fat! There are so many more interesting things to talk about than weight.

ICE: Hi. Please do not comment on my body. Thin ≠ happy or better.

When someone comments on something you put on your plate

NICE: I didn’t drive all this way to spend today eating salad :)

SPICE: Oh, I’m sorry — did you think my food choices were any of your business? Because they’re not.

ICE: (Stare) RUDE. (Continue loading plate.)

When someone jokes about the holidays making us fat

NICE: Oh, stop it. One day of feasting is not going to make anyone fatter than they already are.

SPICE: And…? Nothing wrong with being fat.

ICE: Why is fatness a punchline for you? Do you think my body size is funny or to be mocked?

When food is moralized

NICE: Oh, stop… Food is morally neutral and today is about feasting. Let it go!

SPICE: Bad for you? Is it crawling with maggots? ‘Cause that’s the only way I see pie being bad.

ICE: Stop moralizing food. It is harmful to talk and think about food this way and I will not let you talk this way around me and my children.

Whether you chose NICE, SPICE, or ICE, don’t be afraid to voice your boundaries and push back against diet culture and fatphobia during the holiday season.

my biggest issue with the httyd live action-and just about any live action reboot is that it seems that the live action adaptations are being made to make the original “better”? like, so many people talk about a live action spiderverse, a live action hercules, a live action PRINCE OF EGYPT (dont piss me OFF.)-like animation is a beautiful work of art, and for some reason putting real people and cgi in it is supposed to be an “upgrade”? im probably being that friend that’s too woke or whatever, but i just think it’s so disrespectful to act like something that takes so much time and effort and energy is immediately considered as lower because it is animated. animation is beautiful, and it is one of the most heartfelt art forms there are, and erasing that for the sake of a cash grab is downright degrading to animation as a medium.

a beautiful man with long black hair dressed in all white sat next to me on the train back from denmark. i complimented his outfit, and he asked me where the train was going. after i told him, he then pointed at my shirt which says 'catastrophe' and said "oh i know a lot about those." and laughed uproariously.

and then he asked me "do you know about norse mythology?" and i said yes a bit because i read the edda a decade ago, and he said "i met fenrir in denmark" and i said that's probably not good if fenrir is walking around. and he said "oh don't worry about it, vithar will take care of it" and i replied oh but that's ragnarøk, that's still pretty bad for us mortals is it not? and he grinned at me like i said something incredibly funny. and then he ignored me for the rest of the train ride?

Speaking as a survivor of child sex abuse: the world would be a lot better if yall spent less time talking about the ways in which pedophiles should be punished and more time supporting survivors and preventing abuse

I get it, punishment can feel cathartic. I’ve certainly spent time imagining all the ways in which my own abuser might be punished. But ultimately, him dying, or being jailed, or publicly shamed, isn’t actually going to help me nor will it stop more kids from getting hurt in the future.

I don’t want more prisoners. I want free therapy with trauma informed counselors. I want better sex education for young children that teaches them about consent and body autonomy. And I want a society in which I can openly discuss my trauma, or at least as openly as yall discuss the evils of pedophiles
