im surprised no ones called me out on me calling mr gao from turning red sexy...like deadass i think hes hot. the hottest people arent 4*TOWN. it’s malik the security guard, whoever that russian teacher was and mr gao. i said what i said. looking at the hottest people in a pixar film is probably the worst thing i’ve done in my life but i said what i said.

my parents lived in the GTA with my dad having clients in the spadina-dundas area and making trips there at least every week to visit the furama cakes and dessert garden as their accountant (an iconic bakery in toronto’s chinatown) in this essay i will explain why it’s perfectly reasonable for me to write a fanfiction in which my dad becomes part of the turning red-verse

i can’t put into words exactly how excited i am to not only see chinese rep, but CANTONESE rep. cantonese ppl don’t get a lot of representation in western media when it comes to east asian for plenty of reasons (korean and japanese are more popular/palatable/easy to transpose western media to) but ALSO. it makes sense. it makes fucking sense. if you take a random asian person off the street of 2002 toronto (ESPECIALLY in the chinatown, spadina/dundas area), chances are they’re from hong kong, where everyone mainly speaks canto. hell, the main demographic of toronto’s downtown chinatown would be cantonese people.

domee shi absolutely NAILED the little nuances of growing up chinese (and specifically, cantonese) in the GTA - while i have differences like me being a cis male, and also being raised in the mid-late 2000s compared to meilin’s early 2000s, some things are just timeless, like:

the reflection of the culture within toronto. toronto’s a big mishmash of different cultures - tyler’s dad has a Caribbean accent (not sure about his mom, she only had like one line), priya is south asian and we see a few muslim characters, the school’s security guard being sikh and his iconic “hi, miss?”, miriam is (i believe, don’t quote me on this) jewish? abby is korean and we actually see her drop a few korean lines

also we see an chinese teen with his hair kinda tied up in a little bun. i’ve seen that kind of hair on a few guys growing up around that same time frame.

i actually thought jin was korean until i saw the way he answers the phone. that was all i needed to know he was canto too

the aunties. periodt. the aunties. both the short haired aunty and mr gao having the little spot (what is that, actually? melanoma?)

 the literal colour scheme of all the characters, everyone has their own colour but you also see mei’s aunties/grandmas + ming all wearing shades of green and blue to emphasize their “calmness” and how they’re almost the opposite of their red panda, but mei is primarily pink

likewise jin wears a lot of white. i’m pretty sure that’s the. only. shirt he wears in the film. he wears different pants. i double checked. he only wears that fucking white polo shirt. jin i love you but please that shirt can only get you so far in terms of iconic

also nailed the aesthetic of like. you’re next to your parent driving you home after something bad happened between you two

mr gao was also iconic, and also sexy   but my favourite line was “i like tony bennett” implying that at some point he sang tony bennett during a ritual. likewise, he looked fucking badass with that sword.

the cantonese chanting combined with 4TOWN??? HELLO???

if i’m correct, we see young ming around what would have been her in the 60s/70s (assuming she’s around 40-50 in 2002), then slightly older ming in the later 70s and early 80s? and then present ming. the fashion of hong kong gets pretty nailed if that’s the intended look. especially the look of the glasses.

think it’s a little fucked up that like, you know. the skydome got wrecked and it makes sense and all. but like a hundred million dollars is a fuckin LOT. if that happened irl the skydome would still be under construction now even if like the lee family raised their goal.

Gilded Cage Trailer Analysis

a So! The new trailer for Gilded Cage dropped, and im absolutely LIVING for it!!! the theme seems to be “psycho sci-fi”, which is a take from Death and All His Friends with the “psycho Victorian” thing they had going on. So let’s start with the main trailer, we basically got who I think is the host narrating, and then we see the silhouettes, which bring up a TON of things. First off we have 16 people, which is a bit less than last season, which had about 18? We also received  pronouns for each person as well as what appears to be names? but the problem is that there are 18 names, so i think one is not included in here, was so short we didn’t see them, or is the host, OR is the dog. Full list below.

First off on the very left we have kneeling girl. I’m placing her talent as Astronomer because the things in her hair look like crescent-shaped hair pieces, although they are a bit long. we’ve had demons in the past so Demon is also up there?

 Next is ponytail guy, we don’t seem to have a lot for him but you can see his gloves are fingerless so maybe that’s a tip-off? maybe some sort of Vigilante or Hitman?

After him is nose guy, you can see an ascot and he looks to be dressed formally so I’m looking at Entrepreneur, but Photojournalist is also speaking to me a LOT. 

next is the tall girl with crutches, she has a beanie and looks to have like a nature vibe about her...I’m looking at Tree Climber or Lumber Cutter??  and she just had a fall accident before the game.

we have umbrella guy next, and I don’t really know because meteorologist or weather forecaster seems a bit too on the nose. he has a scarf and sorta wavy hair, but for now I’m putting those two down.

Cane guy is next and he is confirmed to be the one with the dog, so it looks like he might be blind or something along those lines, the last time we saw that was with Junichi and his dog McCartney in Kalovka Youth Conference. I can’t tell much from his shape but it looks like he has a hat? I’ll go with Knitter. 

After him is I think who looks to be some royalty or a maid? which is a nice tie-in with last game. she has that regal feel about her so I’m gonna put down Princess and also Maid although we have seen maids in the past.  could also be lady Elizabeth from last game, too?

Next is Cap guy, he looks to be some sort of military officer or train conductor with that hat and jacket? leaning towards Conductor mostly because of the long jacket, doesn’t look military styled.

We’re progressing to the right side of the screen, and after Cap guy is Goggles, confirmed nonbinary and uses hy/hyr pronouns, can’t tell much. maybe dancer because of the sleeves and long cloak? not sure, we did have a dancer in Tantalus. I’m also putting down Pilot, but we haven’t seen one of those in ages.

Then we have Redd Lightoller, which is confirmed and makes the first confirmed victim since most repeat characters end up dying straight away. Racer confirmed.

We have I think dress girl, it’s hard to tell who she is or what talent, but I think I’ll put down something like Dressmaker, i dunno. she is tall, so maybe Model? hard to get a feel for her image.

okay the next one strikes me as related to flowers, but also her face looks to have some sort of gas mask. I’m going to say Florist, maybe she’s allergic to flowers? she also has i think cat ears, weird. catgirl? maybe.

then we have what looks to be someone with a bow and arrow? so it’s suffice to say this is some sort of Archer or Marksman of sorts, but we also see his image have an effect of splitting into two right as the screen flickers, so something’s up with that.

we’re almost through, we have third from the right, a girl who is wearing a flower crown! very 2013, also very short. i can already tell she’ll be a fan favourite and will die sooner than we want, she looks to be very carefree in the way she’s posed.  I already put down florist, so maybe Flower Girl or Wedding Planner??

second from the right we have someone with glasses, he looks to be a nerd or academic of sorts. i’m pegging him to be a sort of Librarian, maybe? or a science-related field.

Finally on the far right we have someone wearing what looks to be a large dress too and wings. lot of people wearing dresses, but the ends of the dress look too wavy to be conventional lining? maybe it’s hair? for her talent i think i’ll say she’s Costume Designer of sorts. 

regarding names, we have someone named “Devil’s Food Cake” which can only be a moniker of sorts, so I’m assuming at least one is a vigilante or operating under that name, maybe a DJ? none of them strike me as DJ-like, maybe a stage name. we also have sixteen names, including Redd Lightoller and Isadora Bloodworth, of relation to Camael and Ninian Bloodworth. I think this one might die as a third time’s the charm, but we’ll see. We also have Callie, Yua and Maple, who might be the names of the dog? One of them is. We also have another member of the Makia-Hirano family joining, as well as two people sharing the last name “Sato” - my theory is that archer guy is actually twins who share the same talent??? that would be cool, we’ve never seen that before.

Okay so i’m going try something here. Bill and Kieran (repeating from @redemptionbaby​ in the notes) are, like the majority of the gang, not fit for relationships unless it’s like some AU or something. Relationships in the 18/1900s were really different compared to modern times.

But to be honest Bill actually cared for Kieran - he was shook up when Kieran died and felt bad (not to mention he was one of the few gang members who actually felt something when Kieran died) but his problem was no one respected him because he’s on one brain cell, and possibly because he’s into guys. So he lashes out at people or tries to act like Dutch or Micah since they’re people that have high standing in the gang (and Dutch has high respect, Micah...not as much?). Not only that he goes on Kieran because at the time everyone wasn’t a fan of the O’Driscoll, and not only that but Kieran makes basically the perfect punching bag for him - no one’s gonna judge him for it (well a little tbh), and everyone already hates Kieran for being an O’Driscoll so it’s perfect but maybe he just got a little attached. Bill drinks because of PTSD from his time in the army and mixing that with a sort of inferiority complex is not good, which leads to Bill and Kieran’s more memorable interactions. He gets drunk, tries to make up for it (inviting Kieran to drink but he’s a bit more aggressive so he ends up scaring Kieran) gets sad and then drinks some more. It’s a vicious cycle for Bill and it really shows once the gang fragments and he starts getting more “ew” and “uh oh sisters” because the power went to his head. I’m not excusing his behaviour on calling Javier a slur but tbh it’s 1900. Javier was a minority. Maybe Bill was copying Micah, maybe he meant it, maybe he didn’t know what he was saying, there’s a lot of factors in this. He’s really complex and multifacted (kudos to Rockstar for the writing).

Kieran is sort of like Bill. Not many in the camp are a fan of him, and not only that but he’s from the army too. Of course, Kieran doesn’t lash out at people or say slurs or drink, but he definitely would feel pretty pathetic, not just because of what the gang did to him but also he struggles in social interaction with everyone else (read: Javier, Arthur). Not only that but Kieran’s been thrown from gang to gang, so frankly he just wants someone to have his back at the very least. In Kieran’s interaction with Sean (where he tells about his family) he’s afraid he’s going to be seen as weak for talking about his family. Interesting parallel with Bill where both of them don’t want to be seen as weak because of their experiences and emotions, both of them not too well liked by the camp, and both needing support.

I definitely think that Bill could be a sort of “protector” of Kieran because I really do think he’s got a soft side (him with Cain, mainly) and like the best sort of arc for Bill story-wise would be accepting that he’s into guys and cooling down and not lashing out at people, Kieran’s is standing up for himself and proving his worth (or not having to prove his worth at all, or accepting that maybe the camp won’t trust him, which is some Persona shit if anything) so Kieran and Bill would probably have a good relationship if they were expanded upon more.

Okay so like

I've noticed that a load of people in the Red Dead fandom seem to ship Bill and Kieran???? And I just don't get why??? It would be such a toxic relationship (at least in my view) since Kieran is literally terrified of him and Bill is just.. Bill.

I can see Bill being gay from all the hints towards it, and I can definitely see him being into Kieran (although he clearly doesn't know how to deal with it), but they would NOT work out as a ship???
