Which fish do you find least edible
Well the obvious choice is Pufferfish. They have tetrodotoxin which makes them super dangerous to eat unless prepared correctly. One Pufferfish has enough venom to kill 30 people! And if you mean that literally, they're the clear winner.
But double that with 60, Box Jellyfish - which aren't fish but still - aren't very edible either since they have tons of pore-forming toxins which cause cell death.
Stonefish aren't very edible either.
I guess a ton of deep sea fish technically aren't very edible - accessibility wise. I wouldn't really want to try eating a tripod fish... if they're anything like deep sea squid they probably have a ton of ammonia.
Greenland sharks are edible after fermentation or drying, but when they're alive their uric acid is so poisonous that a tiny bit can turn you blind! They're eaten in Iceland.
Although people eat some kinds of [female] anglerfish! Their livers are considered a delicacy, and every part of them can be eaten except from their head and bones!
Don't think you'd be able to eat a frogfish though. They're endangered. And venomous.
Tumblr media
So probably one of those! But I don't eat meat so I guess all fish are the least edible to me.

Do you have any specific least favourite fish?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It'd have to be Hagfish. No doubt. They're slimy, jawless and lack a vertebral column.
The slime is mostly water, but it also contains mucin [which makes up mucus] and slime threads, 10-17cm long. A bundle of these threads can expand to 10,000 times their original size.
They can make 400 times the amount of slime than their body weight, which is already 4% slime. They're even known to die in this slime!

I just wrote a huge infodump about Sayori fish but the app glitched so here's a summary ^^"
Tumblr media
- they're also known as Japanese Halfbeaks
- they're smoked, salted and dried as a form of preservation
- you have to eat them within 1 or 2 days otherwise
- they're usually feeder fish for sharks, swordfish and mackerel
- they're omnivores, eating fish eggs, zooplankton and small crustaceans

French Angelfish:
- they're monogamous which is rare in fish
- found between 3m and 100m of water, and can grow up to 61cm [24in] long!
- eats sponges, algae, moss and coral, amongst other invertebrates
- juveniles act as cleaners to sturgeon and morays!
- eating them often causes "ciguatera" - a type of food poisoning
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Electric eel:
- one type of electric fish, there are a few others*
- they aren't actually eels, but knifefish, and they live in the Amazon
- they can release 600-860v due to part of their cell charge structure being able to switch from a +(- -)+ pattern to a +(- +)- pattern, which generates a shock that can be fatal if they sting you!
- other animals can detect electricity but not release it
Tumblr media
*Notable Others:
Electric Catfish, releases 220v
Torpedo Fish/Electric Ray, releases 350v
Just under 350 species of fish can generate/detect electricity!

Fish Diets!
Cod: Herring, capelin, sand eels, mollusks [like snails, clams and octopus], comb jellies, crustaceans*, starfish, urchins and sea worms. Small cod eat more crustaceans and large cod eat more fish [so the herring and capelin]. They're also cannibals, with young cod eating as high as 56% cod! Adults only eat up to 10%? That's still tons... they're picky eaters too.
Electric Eels: Enjoy fish, crustaceans*, insects, frogs, toads ans lizards. Some even eat birds, rats and mice! That's all I can find as they're too dangerous to really look into. But birds?!
French Angelfish: Eat mostly sea sponges, such as vase sponges. They also eat algae, moss, coral and tunicates, which are a relative of hagfish and lampreys! They like gorgonians and zoanthids, which are similar to coral, and even eat parasites!
Sockeye Salmon: They're pretty silly; they just eat krill, zooplankton, and rarely small fish. Juveniles eat insects and snails. Adults can eat small crustaceans. But mostly zooplankton.
-- Actually an Amphibian --
Axolotl: Earthworms, tubifex, insects, tadpoles, small crustaceans*, brine shrimp [sea monkeys], chicken, beef and fish. Axolotls aren't picky. When kept as pets, live foods, except from earthworms, can carry disease so they are usually served freeze-dried. They also can eat fish pellets, such as those meant for salmon. They eat 3 times a week as adults so every 2-3 days!
Tumblr media
*crabs, lobsters, shrimp, crayfish, krill and barnacles are all types of crustaceans!

Atlantic Cod!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cod is the general name for the genus Gadus. This wasn't always the case as the name Cod used to only refer to the Atlantic Cod, however this is not true now as the label is more extensive and is even used to refer to other Perciformes which is a group of 6000 species -> 150 individual families, 1 of which is the Cod.
Every "type" of cod belongs to one of these three genus: Atlantic Cod [which are the largest and are able to grow up to 2m long] Greenland Cod [0.77m] and the Pacific Cod [1.19m].
They also have a weird sibling in the same Genus: the Alaska Pollock. It is technically also a Cod but not really treated as such. Alternatively, it can be called the Bigeye Cod which I think is a much more sweet and inclusive name. They can grow larger than the Greenland Cod [at a length of 0.9m].
Minecraft Cod are awkward. Instead of 3 dorsal fins like any normal Cod, they only have 2 so I'm imagining, for the sake of my wellbeing, that they are the Atlantic Cod with a genetic mutation. Also, they have the most information about them publicly available.
Atlantic Cod are currently labelled as "Vulnerable" by the IUCN [International Union for Conservation of Nature] at the moment in the US however this is due to a report from 1996 which requires updating. In Europe, they are labelled as of "Least Concern" due to a 2013 study.
They can live for up to 25 years and they generally are mature between the ages of 2 and 8 years old, depending on the species and population of Cod.
They eat herring, capelin, sand eels, mollusks [like snails, clams and octopus], comb jellies, crustaceans*, starfish, urchins and sea worms. Small cod eat more crustaceans and large cod eat more fish [so the herring and capelin].
They're also cannibals, with young cod eating as high as 56% cod! Adults only eat up to 10%? That's still tons... they're picky eaters too.

Critical Salmon Facts: Because Fish Are Dumb And I Love Them
The Sockeye Salmon is the species used in Minecraft. It has an olive head and a bright red body, which makes it pretty iconic. They're also called the Blueback Salmon which is a dumb name because it isn't always true and the Red Salmon which is even dumber because it usually isn't true, only looking so whilst migrating.
Tumblr media
They're a type of anadromous [migrating] fish. Born in rivers, most of them migrate to the ocean to live out their lives before they return to spawn and, being semelparous, they die after mating.
I say mostly because there is an exception: this group of this salmon is suspected to be a consequence of Sympatric Speciation.*
The Kokanee Salmon have not been seen mating with the Sockeye Salmon, even though they are very similar with the major difference between the two being that the Kokanee Salmon doesn't migrate, instead living its life out in the river.
*[Sympatric Speciation is when one group within species mutates, but the original group lives so they just live together, too different to breed. Regular Speciation requires a barrier e.g. a volcano seperates two groups of beetles.]
They can be found all over the world, such as America, Canada, Australia and Japan. In Europe, they can also be found in Finland and Sweden. This doesn't include the Kokanee population though, just Sockeyes.
Sockeye Salmon have weird diets and behaviours too, because of course they do!
They exhibit schooling behaviours like Cod, and DMV [Diel Vertical Migration] which is a stupid way to say they go up to the surface of the ocean at night and down throughout the day.
And they mostly eat fish and plankton anyway, nomatter where they are. This is uncommon for Salmon to do for all of their life. Even as Juveniles they have more interesting diets, sometimes eating snails or insects but no these idiots eat zooplankton. Stucy said I'm not allowed to beef with fish over their stupid diets though.
They spend 1-2 years in a river as juveniles, 2-3 years in the ocean, females lay eggs in 3-5 Redds [nests dug by the males] over the course of a few days and after the males fertilise these they die. Lovely.
Their eggs take 6-9 weeks to hatch so their parents have been long dead by then. The fry grow up the cycle repeats. Like butterflies or moths, just the hideous transformation is outside the chrysalis or cocoon.
Large females tend to spawn in shallow water and weak beta males [non-dominant/subordinate males] have to sneak into the Redds to pass on their genes.
Large humps and snouts are seen as attractive to the female fish and they have to undergo a sudden second puberty to develop this. Females develop large gonads to release these hormones [25% of their weight???] and protect the Redd until they die.
Also because they think that they're so alpha, dominant males are very aggressive, towards both other dominant males and their weak, beta, submissive males. Females are less aggressive, but will still charge at others if protecting their Redd.
These fish are dumb idiots. They're one of my favourites.

Starfish Summary:
- Not an actual fish, they're echinoderms like sea cucumbers and urchins // Brittle stars are ophiuroids
- They use [filtered] sea water like blood for nutrients // This is probably the same fluid that Tripod fish have in their legs
- They can expell their stomach from their mouth to digest // Some eat detritus and debris, others eat oysters
- They can both sexually and asexually reproduce, depending on the species // There are 1900ish species
- They have eyes at the end of their [5-40] arms and hundreds of feet but no brain
- The Cushion Starfish is mostly round but still has 5 tubby legs ^^

Fin-fo Dump :D
Yellowfin Tuna is often sold as Ahi [which is also a nickname for the Bigeye Tuna]. They can be as old as seven, whereas the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna can live up to fifty years!
They can mate at two to three years and lay anywhere between one and four million eggs every three days in their spawning season! These eggs are very little, and grow into tons larger than they are - millions in the case of Bluefin!
As juveniles, Yellowfins can live in schools with the Bigeye and Skipjack tuna and must constantly swim. They also have similar blood vessels to the bluefin tuna so they're warm blooded..ish unlike most fish.
This means that they can travel all around the Atlantic ocean! Or pretty much anywhere but that's their preference, and they get taller than most humans at a length of 6.8 ft or like 6 foot 9.6 inches!

Shubunk-stim!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
☀️ ☁️ ☀️ / ☁️ × ☁️ / ☀️ ☁️ ☀️
Shubunkin are Japanese single-tailed Goldfish! They're not natural, instead being relatives of common goldfish and comet goldfish and calico comet eye goldfish, giving them their iconic pattern!
Although a lot of fish are calico, Shubunkins are special because their scales are nacreous [meaning their scales are a mix between metallic and transparent, so they look pearly]!
