i know it's been said time and time again but nothing hits quite like a character who's stifled their pain and trauma for so long finally receiving some kind of validation or comfort from someone who cares for them and just utterly shattering. crying so hard it sounds like they're dying, body so wrecked by it that the other person is worried they're going to make themself sick. able to withstand all of it by pushing those feelings away until someone said 'i see this, and it's not right, it's not okay, i'm so sorry'

Right now I'm thinking about Caretaker sitting bedside vigil to a Whumpee who's in such excruciating pain, the ragged breath, soaked in sweat, eyes clenched, can barely move or think type of pain. They have no painkillers, so Caretaker offers their hand, their wrist, their upper arm and tells Whumpee "squeeze". Whumpee takes the offer, and Caretaker can feel the slight tremble as Whumpee holds onto them for dear life, desperate to focus on anything else besides the agony. Caretaker wincing as Whumpee squeezes harder and harder, but refusing to pull away or complain. Whumpee feeling guilty the next day when the worst of it is over and they can see the the dark finger-shaped bruises they pressed into Caretaker. Caretaker reassuring them, Caretaker offered after all, and they're just glad Whumpee is doing better. Do you see my vision

walk with me. when a whumpee who was held captive with constant manacles/handcuffs, years later, after rescue and recovery of all the physical wounds, wears a too-tight watch or a clinky charm bracelet and is suddenly thrown back to then - and scrambles to take it off, just get it off, to the shock and confusion of the people around them. bonus points if the jewellery was a gift, bonus bonus points if they get damaged or broken in the panic and the ex-whumpee ends up, through their ptsd-fueled haze, apologising profusely and ignoring the fact that their loved one cares far more about them than the gift anyway

i love characters who could get the absolute Shit kicked out of them and still be fine but as soon as someone touches/handles them gently it’s like “ah. im going to shatter to pieces now thanks”

a stoic whumpee who completely leans into comfort and love when they're barely coherent from pain meds. because they really do crave it but feel like they can’t allow themselves to truly let their walls down when they’re actually lucid

Fantasy whump I never see enough: the moment the shield breaks.

A magical shield cracking like glass under a powerful attack, shattering into thousands of shards.

Metal being cut or burned straight through.

The one thing that was supposed to protect you just not being enough.

Bonus points if the character was trying to shield someone else. And maybe they get hurt instead.

An injured character in enough pain that moving even slightly is excruciating but they need to reach out to their companion for comfort, no matter what it costs them, because the physical assurance of touching their companion is worth the additional pain.

i hate when i have the perfect idea for a whump scene but i have no ideas for why the scene happens. yeah this guy got kidnapped. for. for plot reasons??? idk you figure it out

i. love. characters that are so paranoid and distrustful of others pushing past that distrust because of a raw desire for connection and affection

knowing logically that they're safest if they isolate themselves, but on the inside, so badly wanting to just be with someone who cares

every touch for years has brought pain, but someone offers a hug and their heart is torn in two, half of them retreating to avoid it and half of them wanting desperately for it to be real

the human equivalent of an abused rescue animal finally letting their new person pet them

that crack in their defenses, that step off the edge of total shut-down safety, that last scrap of hope left saying one last try

fictional character: *goes completely apeshit and loses control of their powers after the person they love is threatened*

BIG FAN of when characters have their pain noticed and validated by others. The pitying looks. The shock on people's faces after hearing how much they've been through. How differently people act once they know. The tears and anger on their behalf. What do you Mean you never had the vitamin-

Quick tips for writing kisses

⇰ the pause. THE PAUSE. like “are we doing this? oh god we’re doing this.”

⇰ looking at each other’s mouths like it’s a life-or-death decision

⇰ someone whispering “can I?” or “just once” before going for it and RUINING ME EMOTIONALLY

⇰ hands. gripping shirts. cupping faces. hovering like “do I touch?? I WANNA TOUCH”

⇰ breath hitching?? yes. shakiness?? absolutely.

⇰ that stupid moment where one of them pulls back a few inches like “wait are you sure” and the other just goes for it again

⇰ kissing like they’re scared it’ll be the last time

⇰ kissing like they’ve been waiting ten goddamn years

⇰ teeth clashing awkwardly and both laughing about it but STILL FEELING IT

⇰ one of them freezing for a second mid-kiss because the feelings just hit

⇰ the post-kiss moment of “uh. so. yeah.” where neither knows what the hell just happened

⇰ OR the post-kiss forehead touch. destroy me.

loooove me a protective caretaker. like whumpee being like, it’s fine, we can move forward with our lives, I don’t want to give whumper another thought. And caretaker is like okay that’s nice but I need them dead actually. (And I need to be the one to do it)
