"All This Time" Part 3
Smooth as butter. The first day of filming for "A Bird That Soars" went smooth as butter. It was definitely a long day but it was fun, Richard loved seeing the vision for this film come to life on-screen. The biggest scene that was filmed overall involved Richard's character "Xavier Sanders" and Marisol's character "Sophia Guzman". Xavier had just gotten the news that his college football career is in jeopardy so he goes out to a bar for a drink to clear his head when he meets a beautiful bartender named Sophia. The characters connect with each other as Xavier vents to her, Sophia too can relate due to her losing her ballet career due to injury, all her years of hard work shattered. The Director of Photography, Kyle couldn't help but clap and comment on Richard and Marisol's chemistry. Later on that night, Richard and Marisol went out into the local downtown area to hang out and celebrate. They walked into a dive bar called "The Bad Fang" and instantly the first thing to greet them was a dog.
"It's a pitbull!" Richard smiled as he patted the dog on it's head.
"I never thought I'd go to a dive bar and be greeted by a dog!" Marisol laughed as she patted the dog as well.
The dog actually belonged to the owner and was a favorite among the locals who often frequented the bar. Eventually the best friends made their way to the bar and ordered two drinks, but nothing too heavy. As much as Richard liked to let loose, deep down inside he was scared to ever get black-out drunk in front of Marisol because he had no idea what words would come out his mouth. If he ever confessed his feelings for her he didn't want it to be in a drunken stupor. Marisol as she sipped on her drink was admiring a few girls that passed them by.
"That ass" Marisol whispered as she watched a indian girl that passed them by.
"It does have a pretty good shape to it" Richard chimed in.
"Gosh when is a cute girl ever actually gonna try to hit on me!?"
"Plenty of girls hit on you!"
"Uhhh when was this??"
"Ummm--uh--I---there was that one time at the gym!"
"Richard she was asking for directions to the bathroom!"
Marisol often lamented over the fact that she struggled to attract girls, it wasn't because of appearances. Marisol was certainly beautiful, with her thick head of dark brown hair that ran down her back, her dimples, and thick, fit physique. However, the majority of the time it was still heterosexual males that would shoot their shot with her.
"Listen Marisol, you just have to take my advice. Remember next time ya go to the supermarket, go to the cereal section" Richard advised.
"Now that I think about it, I haven't ate cereal in forever" Marisol thought aloud.
"My point exactly, the girl of your dreams could be waiting on ya there"
"The last time I went to the supermarket the only thing I found was old man jenkins telling me how thick my thighs were and how juicy my ass is! I mean is my ass really that big??"
"I'd hate to break this to you buddy but you've always had a dump truck"
"I guess all those leg days paid off huh?"
Richard had been guilty of respectfully but subtly taking a peak at Marisol's "assets" on more than a few occasions. Suddenly the 2000s Kelly Clarkson pop song "Catch My Breath" began to start playing. They both laughed as they sang the lyrics to the hook as it blared through the building. Richard may have been a muscular, African-American young man but he had no shame in his guilty pleasure of whitegirl music, and Marisol took joy in joining in with it. Richard noticed a small clique of cute girls who were dancing among each other. The girls all looked friendly and fun-loving. A bright idea came to Richard's head.
"Hey Marisol, see those girls over there? They look pretty cute huh?" Richard noticed.
"Actually yeah they do, they look like they could be my type but too bad they'd probably never approach me" Marisol said.
Richard smirked as he said "Wait right here". Marisol was momentarily caught off guard when Richard walked away and approached the group of three girls who were dancing among each other. Marisol saw Richard talking to the girls, not able to quite make out what was being said but she noticed the girls look in her direction as Richard pointed at her. Suddenly they all smiled as they walked up to Marisol.
"Hi I'm Fatima and this is Brittany and Gail and your friend told us you were a little shy, you should totally come dance with us" Fatima smiled.
"Right on let's do--" Marisol began.
However, before Marisol could complete her sentence the three girls playfully grabbed a hold of Marisol and pulled her down to the middle of the floor.
Richard gave Marisol a smile and two big thumbs up as he passed her by, she returned the gesture. Richard wanted Marisol to have some fun, but in the meantime he decided to go to the bar and have a seat on one of the stools. Richard looked at his best friend who seemed to be mingling well with the girls as she fell in rhythm with their dance moves. Marisol was always a really good dancer, the skills stemming from her Hispanic roots. Richard couldn't help but enjoy what he saw.
"Great view isn't it?" a voice said.
Richard looked beside him and sitting next to him was a bald, caucasian man who appeared to be in his late 30s.
"Yeah I guess you could say it is" Richard smirked.
"The names Nathaniel"
"I'm Richard"
"The fit hispanic girl out there, you're in love with her aren't you?"
Richard looked at the stranger not understanding how he could know something so personal, without even knowing him.
"I might not know you, but I'm a man. I noticed you two a while ago, and saw the way you look at her"
"How do I look at her?"
"Like she's the only girl in the room"
Richard couldn't argue with the man who he didn't even know and yet somehow had him all figured out.
"Clearly I'm not as inconspicuous as I thought" Richard retorted.
"Not quite but that's okay. I know a little something about love too. Have you told her how you feel?"
"No"
"When you feel the time is right you should do it"
Richard didn't know how to respond to that, considering that the idea scared him half to death. Something that Richard always cherished was how comfortable Marisol had always been with him ever since they were in high school, he knew that revealing what was in his heart could destroy that.
"I don't know Nathaniel"
"I get it, it's not easy taking a leap of faith especially when it comes to matters of the heart. Even if she only sees you as a friend, just maybe you'll find relief in telling her the truth. Take it from a man who let the love of his life slip away, don't end up like me, sitting here lonely in a dive bar looking back on life wishing I had just followed my heart"
Richard took in everything the stranger was saying as he looked in his eyes seeing the story behind them, the hurt and regret.
"Just think about it, good luck my friend" Nathaniel said as he got up from his seat and left the bar.
Richard watched the man walk out, wishing he knew more about his story, wondering who the woman was in his life that got away. The woman who he would never have. Richard began to wonder if Nathaniel's fate would be his own, sitting in a dive bar 18 years from now, with grey chin hairs, lonely, wondering where all the time had gone, the woman of his dreams forever just being a "dream". It was as if on cue that the dog that greeted him and Marisol earlier at the door came to Richard's feet. Richard smiled at the dog and patted him, enjoying the feeling of comfort. As he played with the dog he looked onto the dance floor and saw Marisol enjoying the company of the three girls he nudged in her direction. The old Taylor Swift song "22" was playing and they dancing to the flow of it as they sang parts of the song too. Moments like these were the greatest moments in life, seeing Marisol Fernandez happy. Seeing her smile made life worth it in his eyes, seeing her eyes light up with the pure joy. She was always "his girl" in the platonic, figurative sense and he was always "her guy". Richard continued to look on at his best friend, Marisol while in the middle of dancing looked in Richard's direction and locked eyes with him. Richard smiled at her and Marisol returned it with a smile just as big. Just that smile being thrown in his direction was enough for him, no risk was worth losing that. No risk, not even his heart.

"All This Time" Part 2
"Great job on holding your auditions guys!" Professor Jensen congratulates the students.
The film crew just got done holding auditions for local actors in order to fill the remaining smaller roles in the student film "A Bird that Soars". Tanner, the sound gaffer and Melissa, the script supervisor both high-five each other in celebration.
"After seeing the new talent, I'm even more excited to start rolling with this film!" Richard smiled.
"Me too! But between me and you we gotta run lines because I do not know anyyyyy of these lines!" Marisol laughed.
"Oh don't you worry I'm gonna make sure you're A-okay you can count on me!"
"Kwool!"
Marisol had this unique way of saying "cool" that she said with a w mixed in there, Richard would never grow tired of hearing it. The Director of Photography, Kyle gave Richard a knowing look, well aware of Richard's secret feelings for Marisol. Richard tried to pretend like he didn't see the look. As the crew are all exiting the room in the resort they were holding auditions at, an unexpected guest appears.
"Marisol!" a familiar voice spoke.
Marisol and Richard turn around at the sound of the voice. They see standing at a short distance is Conor, who went to high school with Richard and Marisol. The sight of Conor makes both Marisol and Richard incredibly uncomfortable, especially since Marisol dated him during sophomore year of high school.
"Well if it isn't my ex, Marisol Fernandez" Conor smirked as he moved his floppy brunette hair out of his eyes.
Conor cockily smirks in Richard's direction as well.
"And Richard Dell, funny running into you two here"
"Ummmm what exactly are you doing here??" Marisol demanded.
"Well for your information me and my boys are out here vacationing before the next semester, plus my smoking hot girlfriends gonna be here tomorrow" Conor informed.
Conor subtly looked Marisol up and down as he shakes his head in amusement.
"Marisol Marisol Marisol, you're looking rather butch" Conor said.
Conor's snide comment referred to Marisol's appearance. She was dressed in a pair of baggy dark jeans, with a muscle-shirt, and a blue bandanna tied around her head. She was what you called a "stem". She presented herself in both masculine and feminine ways depending on her mood. Richard thought she looked beautiful no matter what she wore.
"Don't disrespect her" Richard warned.
He stepped up close to Conor to show he was serious. As Richard stepped up, suddenly Conor's entourage of his two college baseball teammates pop up on both sides of Conor. Conor's permanent smirk seemed to get even wider.
"Careful Richie, before ya hurt yourself" Conor said.
"My name is Richard asshole and like I said don't you ever disrespect Marisol" Richard corrected as he balled his fists up and puffed his chest out.
Richard and Conor were both equal in muscle mass and strength, but Conor had his friends that were there to have his back. Richard's friends were there too but film students weren't exactly known for their brute strength or athletic prowess, with the exception of Marisol who religiously lifted weights with Richard, and had boxing experience. Marisol boldly stepped in between the two rivals, firmly taking a hold of Richard's arm to pull him back.
"It's okay Richard, come on let's go" Marisol urged.
Richard allowed Marisol to pull him away before this situation could get ugly. The rest of the film crew looked on in concern as Marisol led Richard outside to get some fresh air. Despite the adrenaline that was rushing through Richard, the first thing he was concerned with was Marisol.
"You okay Marisol?" Richard asked.
"Richard I'm fine! But are YOU okay?" Marisol asked.
"Yeah I'm alright I guess, I just hate that guy and him being disrespectful to you, I'd never let anybody talk to you like that in front of me" Richard declared.
"Thanks frannddd! My hero! You were so ready to kick Conor's ass!"
"Oh you better believe it!"
Richard suddenly thought back to high school, when Marisol was dating Conor. Richard remembers how much he hated that time period.
"Marisol don't mind me asking, but back in high school what did you ever see in that guy??" Richard asked.
"Your guess is as good as mine! He was such a douchebag! If I could go back in time I would slap fifteen-year old me for dating that asshat!"
"Ya know sometimes in life, ya gotta swim in rivers before you can swim in oceans"
"Swim in oceans huh? Well thank God my dad taught me how to swim before college!"
Conor was the only guy that Marisol had ever dated in her entire life and he fumbled her, who in Richard's eyes was the most wonderful girl in the world. Richard could never stand Conor and his cocky attitude, always bragging about how great he was at baseball but deep down inside a part of him subconsciously blamed Conor for Marisol never giving guys another chance. Conor had been given the one and only chance that Richard would've given anything for. The chance to be the one who put Marisol's smile on her face, the chance to open the door to Marisol's heart. Sure Marisol had always been into girls, but Conor destroyed any chance for any guys that potentially came after him, Richard in particular. The more he thought about it, the more he wishes he had punched Conor's teeth down his throat. A vein shows in the side of his neck, quiet intensity begins to show on his face.
"Ummmm Richard!" Marisol says.
Richard suddenly snaps out of his trance.
"Huh? Oh sorry I just zoned out for a moment there" Richard responded.
"You look like you were hulking up! Ya know what, let's run lines and clear our heads"
"Good idea"
They did need to run lines with each other more for their lead roles in "A Bird That Soars", so for now his desire to hurt Conor would have to wait.

"All This Time" Part 1
"Wowww this place is pretty dope!" Richard said in awe.
Richard looked around at the room where him and his best friend, Marisol would be staying in.
"Ahhh lawdy this looks nice and cozy like somethin out of a Hallmark movie!" Marisol gleamed as she put down her bags and jumped on her bed.
Richard and Marisol were both studying in a summer film program and were booked as roommates in the Tanner Resort. They were apart of a program that sent a bundle of film students to the resort in order to film "A Bird that Soars" their big student film they had dreamed of making a reality. Richard and Marisol were the lead actors in the film while Richard was also the director, Marisol was assigned too as an AD. Richard was African-American, had strong features, bore a muscular build and wore a skin-fade box haircut. Marisol was 5'1, of Hispanic descent, stocky and muscular with a thick set of legs that could crack walnuts, and bore thick brown wavy hair that ran down her back. Marisol bore tattoos, had a slit in her right eyebrow, and sometimes a case of resting bitch face that she purposely used to try to scare off heterosexual men who wanted to ask for her phone number. In another lifetime, Richard could picture Marisol being some kind of rebellious warrior princess who conquered lands and slayed warlords. Both the students were in their early 20s and had been best friends since high school. Richard had been thanking his lucky stars that Marisol was his roommate during their stay this summer, although he was surprised the instructors allowed it considering that he was a guy and she was a girl.
"Marisol check out this view" Richard said as he gazed outside the window.
Marisol joined Richard at the window and gazed outside, seeing the beautiful mountains that were off in the distance.
"Ayyye now that's wicked! We definitely gotta go hiking through that!" Marisol smiled.
"Oh you better believe it! It'll be like an adventure and you know how much I love a good adventure" Richard agreed.
"Oh do ya now?"
"Oh yes indeed! Almost as much as a wood chuck loves chucking wood!"
"Do wood chucks actually chuck wood?"
"Oh of course, it's a tough job but somebodys gotta do it right? Speaking of wood chucks I got a joke for ya, why are wood chucks terrible drivers?"
"Hmmm I don't know why?"
"Because they hog the road! Get it? Because wood chucks look like ground hogs"
"Not because they look like ground hogs!"
Marisol genuinely laughed at her buddies joke. That was something that Richard considered endearing about Marisol, no matter how bad his jokes were she always laughed. She had this laugh that wasn't a typical girly giggle, it was more like a big chuckle and Richard would never get tired of hearing it. A knock came at the door suddenly.
"You may enter!" Marisol stated in a mock royal queen voice.
Their buddy and Director of Photography, Kyle entered the room.
"What's up home slices!" Kyle smiled as he entered dapping up Richard and hugging Marisol.
They then began to chat about their rooms, Kyle said that he and his roommate liked theirs except for the smell of mildew and ass, according to him. They then chatted about the student film. "A Bird that Soars" was a love story about a college football player who's on the verge of losing everything after he is diagnosed with a rare heart condition, he meets a girl who's a bartender and was in an abusive relationship. They discuss the script, shot locations, and the cast.
"Now Richard in that scene where you're supposed to pick me up, I weigh 160 but don't be nervous it's okay if you drop me. Ya know in front of everybody, like I'm a sack of potatoes" Marisol joked.
"You mean like this?" Richard smirked.
He then proceeds to pick Marisol up over his shoulders and playfully tosses her onto her bed. Marisol then wraps her legs around Richard's torso and grabs a hold of his wrist.
"Don't forget I know jiu-jitsu" Marisol said.
Hey now don't go breaking the directors arm, we kinda need him" Kyle laughed.
"That would be bad huh?" Marisol joked.
"Oh horribly bad especially if it's my right arm because I am soooo not southpaw" Richard laughed.
Suddenly the three students hear a loud song start playing and it's Sade "Smooth Operator". It came from Marisol's phone. She was young but she had an old soul so she was very much into classic music. Marisol answered the phone and it was her mom checking on her. Richard and Kyle couldn't help but overhear her mom's voice since she was loud and seemed to switch between English and Spanish at a rate that was hard to keep up with. Marisol stepped outside the room to finish up the phone call that she could see was gonna take a while. Even she sometimes had trouble keeping up with her mom sometimes because she didn't grow up speaking Spanish, she only learned it within the past few years.
"Excited about getting this film started bro?" Kyle asked Richard.
"Most def, this is gonna be pretty epic" Richard smiled.
"Are you sure this film is all you鈥檙e excited for?"
"Huh?"
"You know what I'm talking about. You and Marisol being romantic love interests in the film. Not just that but you and her being together in the same room for damn near the whole summer. Separate beds but same room"
Richard goes quiet as he can't exactly deny anything Kyle is saying. Kyle was not naive and was well-aware of Richard's feelings for Marisol. Richard was at a loss for words as he tightly gripped the sides of his blue jean jacket but he responded.
"It has nothing to do with Marisol--I'm just excited to make a movie" Richard lied through his teeth.
"Dude I hope your actings better than that once we start filming because you didn't even believe that" Kyle smirked.
Richard was head over heels for Marisol, he had been for years although a part of him hoped it wasn't obvious but deception was never one of his strong suits. He hoped to God that Marisol never knew and that nobody had ever told her.
"It's okay dude it's no secret that you love the girl and that you love her strong-ass thighs and her strong-ass biceps and her strong-ass booty but just don't let your feelings get in the way of the work" Kyle warned.
Richard solemnly nodded his head, again not denying anything Kyle said.
Kyle then left the room. Richard thought about Marisol, his feelings for her weren't just about the physical, although that part helped. There was something about her spirit and her kind soul that he always loved. Ever since they first met in ninth grade in high school she always rooted for Richard. In everything Richard had ever done, she always cheered for him, telling him he could do anything and it meant the world to him. Marisol opened the door back up after being done with her mom.
"Yoooo Richard, wanna go check out the area?" Marisol asked.
"Of course"
Marisol grabbed her pack of cigarettes from her bag and slipped them in her pocket and turned to walk out the door.
"Hey Marisol"
Marisol stopped to look at her buddy. Richard couldn't help but say this to her.
"You're the best" Richard declared.
Marisol gave a big smile, one side of her teeth had a slight imperfection but Richard loved it all the same.
"Ayyye! You're the best too frannnddd" Marisol smiled.
This was part of "their thing". Richard couldn't count how many times over the years he told her she was the best but she never grew tired of it, no matter how random and out of place it would seem sometimes. These were the simple things that Richard most appreciated, even knowing he would never have Marisol's heart.
