And, to add on to my own post, there's a great scene where Ennis has plans to make a special dinner (not beans, for once!) but everything gets wrecked by a literal bear attack, and he comes home late and Jack is PISSED there's nothing on the stove. He even says the cliche "I work all day and come home expecting dinner ready" thing.
But, of course, Jack realizes he's the asshole when he learns what happened. That forgiveness and apology is one of the key scenes that makes Ennis fall for him.
A bear attack, that's a man's problem. It doesn't matter that the equivalent of a bear attack happens every day for Alma - toddlers getting sick, breaking things, a coworker calls out and she has to cover - Ennis cannot apply what he learned/loved from Jack onto his own actions.
Just rewatched Brokeback Mountain (on the big screen for the 20th anniversary, highly recommend!) and somehow only just realized that part of the reason Ennis is able to be himself on Brokeback is that their boss literally assigns him the role of a homemaker.
And he discovers that he likes taking care of Jack, ordering the food he wants, and he's good at cooking. Meanwhile Jack can barely open a can of beans. And then, as their relationship progresses, they share both roles pretty equally and they're both happier.
But when Ennis gets back home and into heteronormative society, when he feels like everyone can tell he's queer just by looking at him, his homemaker qualities are one of the first things to go. He stops helping Alma around the house, he starts pitching fits when she doesn't cook him dinner. It's the role he's "supposed" to play, and it destroys his marriage.
And meanwhile - Jack and Lureen remain friends throughout their marriage because Jack knows who he is (and she has money and their day to day work is less survival oriented). They can afford to be more flexible in their gender roles. Jack's a great, invested, dad, and isn't afraid to act like a PTA mom with their son's teacher. Meanwhile Ennis' inability to bend even a little to help with "women's work" is what drowns both he and Alma.
Anyway, gender is made up and maintaining the patriarchy is exhausting and unsustainable. I love this movie so much and hate how relavant it still is. Happy 20th Brokeback. Miss you Heath Ledger.
